Thomas Cook has collapsed after 178 years. his knees must have been knackered.
150,000 British tourists abroad with no return flight, 600.000 tourists stranded worldwide.
They didn't stand a chance really did they? - little high street shops that you go in and sit down and book a holiday? - is it 1986? - people have this thing called the internet where you can communicate with any hotel owner in the world, any taxi or bus firm, train timetables, couriers, car hire and a billion other global services without your arse leaving the sofa, did no one tell them?
it amazes me that companies like this go bust, all those planes and shops draining money? - close all shops, sell all aircraft and utilise budget airlines and save billions, pointless trying to compete when its not possible. No one cares about 'comfort' and a 3 course TV dinner style meal in flight - this accounts for 2h at the beginning and end of the holiday, - get them there on a Ryanair flying bus, then with money saved they can have a slightly more luxurious stay for 14 nights. They went down the wrong road and refused to turn back, 'Your holiday starts at the airport!' - no it doesn't mate, the holiday starts when Spiros lifts your cases out of the arse end of the coach at 2am and you are wondering whether there's a bar nearby, no one cares how they got there
 
Thomas Cook collapses as last-ditch rescue talks fail
Thomas Cook has collapsed after last-minute negotiations aimed at saving the 178-year-old holiday firm failed.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the tour operator has "ceased trading with immediate effect".

It has also triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation, aimed at bringing more than 150,000 British holidaymakers home.

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook's chief executive, said the firm's collapse was a "matter of profound regret".

Commenting as the company entered compulsory liquidation, Mr Fankhauser also apologised to the firm's "millions of customers, and thousands of employees".


The tour operator's failure puts 22,000 jobs at risk worldwide, including 9,000 in the UK.

Having two children TC provided us with affordable holidays in the 80's... I even in 2009 got a flight deal £180, return Manchester to Bahrain for F1..

But 2010 arrived and bailed out to sum of 500.000.000 by german parent company.. the high street was well into decline as was the public using TC shops booking...
2012 arrived. TC flight to Goa.
Boarded the plane 09.20
Sat on runway 3 hours,
12.30pm.taken off the flight, faulty fuel gauge. Got put up in marriot. Flight rearranged for 08.00am, next day,
Boarded the flight, same issue fuel.not showing on the panel. Got off the flight once again.

TC desk riots started..I went for a quiet pint, couldnt be bothered
Then a inward bound flight on route from Montego bay to Gatwick. Was diverted to Manchester, the cabin staff cleaned the rubbish up inside the cabin themselves. 13.00pm we boarded the plane . The passengers from Montego bay were sent to Gatwick via coach..

By the time I arrived in Dabolim 48 hours late... I vowed never to travel TC again.. i did recieve a 100% refund for the flight delay. TC, Fined by the hour whilst sat on the tarmac..

The End.
 
Hmm sad news but i wonder how long it takes to get money back for a booking because next door neighbour was due to go on holiday first week in october lol
 
Thomas crooks were still advertising Holidays & taking payment until late into last night. Surely that has to be fraud or deception.. so so wrong.. My neighbour has literally been over to ask what to do as they have a holiday booked for Jamaica 15th October, to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Fealt awful but she booked a full package deal.on her credit card.
Now its finding a new flight and hotel as the hotel in Jamaica cannot/wont help without paying again...

My mam, her sister and one of her friends is supposed to be going to Cuba on Thursday for 2 weeks they are stuck now it's not like they'll get a full refund and be able to book elsewhere. Over 1k each paid.

Heartbreaking. Having seen my neighbour earlier I fealt sorry for them. Even if found an alternate flight, the prices are going to be extortionate.
 
Mad though as I thought 200 million would be nothing to them considering the money they get. It's expected over 100 million to get people back stuck out there. Who's paying for atol? That won't be cheap
 
I haven't had a holiday or left the UK in over 25 years, this is all corporate bs to me how they can companies make huge profit one minute then go bust the next... bad management & an unrealistic profit driven business models me thinks...
 
Yeah i bet nothing is done in penalties etc against them for still taking bookings up until the last minute collapse ffs what a bigtime f..kup for sure and feel sorry for people that are directly affected aswell 🤔

Tell your neighbor to see if they can claim it back on card, my mother has and they said upto one day for money back. They've now booked elsewhere not to Cuba but the difference will help towards spending money.
 
Was booking a last minute holiday to Turkey for 2 weeks beginning of October with Jet2. Picked it out yesterday 22/09 but couldnt book until today due to commitments. Went on Jet2 site today to find it had gone up £300 per person so I know its supply and demand but they can stick it! Is this a sign of things to come now there is less competition?
 
It's odd they have subsideries in other countries, these are profit making companies although as they shared IT services and aircraft they will now struggle, but if they are profit making, why couldn't TC get a loan from it's subsideries to get them by? Or even sell off the subsideries and use that cash?

Poor management I say. I also have to ask why some expect the government to bail them out? they didn't with BHS, they didn't with steel, why TC? It's a privately own company, not state owned, if it's not making money to pay it's debts and creditors and financiers wont take the risk then why should tax payers (many of whom can't afford a holiday themselves) bail it out?

I do feel sorry for those that have booked holidays and spent £1000's and now can't take that holiday, but with the www, why are people giving all their hard earned cash to just one company? get online find and book flight, and then find hotel and book that followed by car hire or independant transfers, normally far cheaper than via a high street agent, and if one goes bust you just need to book that one part and dont lose all your payments.
