The World: Residential passenger liner. Worlds largest privately owned yaught

Galway will play host next week to the most luxurious cruise ship in the world – the largest privately owned residential yacht on the planet.

Fittingly called the World, the impressive 644-foot vessel boasted 165 luxury private residences offering one-of-a-kind lifestyle of exclusive luxury travel where its residents explore every corner of the globe, experience myriad different cultures and gain privileged access to the planet’s most beautiful destinations, all from the comfort of their own home.

The ship arrived into Belfast this week before continuing onto Derry and heading to Galway, where it will spend next Monday and Tuesday before completing its ten day Irish trip with three days in Dublin.

During their stay in Galway, the super-rich residents from 19 countries will visit, among other destinations, Kylemore Abbey and Cnoc Suain, the restored 17th century Connemara hill-village owned by Dearbhaill Standún and Charlie Troy, where they will explore aspects of Irish culture, nature and heritage.

Having sailed to all seven continents – some of them several times – the World will visit more than 30 countries in 2013 taking in its second visit to the island of Ireland in three years. Residents circumnavigate the globe every two to three years following an extraordinary itinerary that they themselves select.

But it is on board the World that luxury reaches new levels with world-class amenities and facilities including impeccable culinary mastery in its six restaurants, exceptional golf facilities with onboard putting greens and a state-of-the-art golf simulator, the only full-size tennis court at sea, swimming pools, a spa, a fitness center, expert destination lecturers, library, cinema and more.

Accommodation ranges from studios to three-bed apartments – but not at prices the rest can afford. As of 2010, studios were priced as $600,000, a two-bed apartment at $2.95 million, and a suite would set you back a mere $13.5 million.

On top of that, you will pay $20,000 per month (for the smaller units) and up, and cover fuel, crew, maintenance and a meal allowance for the owner.

And while there are some residents who live on the ship year-round, the majority spend three to four months onboard.
