Covid-19 the second wave

Your maths are flawed.
Normal flu 1.3
Covid is 3

Ten times infection isn't 15 compared to 56k
Left unchecked or curtailed both will be similar
3 = 56k
1.4 will be around half that about 27k

I'm not sure if you're trolling here haha.

So far off base. Kudos if you are trolling though

I got those figures from a professor of infections.
If you use a calculator and times 1.3 x 1.3 10 times you end up roughly with 14
Were as 3 x 3 x 3 10 times 59,000 this is the same math they use for the R.
Do it for 0.9 and you end up with 0.3 this is why they aim for under 1 as the magic number
My calculator needs a new battery.
But I think it also depends on other factors like temperature and length of time exposed

Exponential growth is a mind ****

Imagine you are writing a book. You say "I'll write enough each day time sure the pile on my desk doubles each day"

First night you have one piece.

Second, two sheets.

On the seventh day you have a pile of 64 sheets. Millimetres high.

After about 3 weeks your pile is around a kilometre high

Around day 40 you reach the moon.

On day 50 you are halfway to the sun.

The next night you get there

The next night you can make it back.

About 3 months in you have crossed the entire universe.

A small increase in the R0 can have huge consequences.

Be surprised if they dont follow through with some sort of national lockdown in the coming weeks.

They are the government of uturns after all.

Circuit breaker type lock down will postpone the spread as long as it stays in force.
Then the virus will continue exactly as before.
Can't see the point at cost of billions per day if it's just putting the inevitable to beginning of November rather than middle of October

No measures they are putting in place is stopping the rise of infections.

Chopping and changing things is making it worse for people who have to work and businesses who in turn are going bust.

The N-Ireland executive has decided to put us on a 4 week mini lockdown, all bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels to close from 6pm this evening, off sales to close at 8pm every night, they seem to think that will stop house partys, it wont, it means lots of workers back on furlough for a month, wet bars only opened again last wednesday, so back to work didnt last long for those workers.

National lockdowns are the only things that'll affect the infection/inevitable increase in death rate imo largely due to the stupidity and the arrogance of the "we know better than scientists" British public.

Lockdown for months: Too long

Lockdown for a couple of weeks: Too short

Can't win.

TBH we can have as many lockdowns possible but I honestly dont think much will change.

Mainly because alot of the public just dont give a toss about following rules to keep themselves or others.

They will still break rules even if more lockdowns come into force.

So whats the point.

The only way to stop people going out is to shut as many things as possible down.

A circuit breaker lockdown will put the infection rate back, yes only by a few weeks, but that could be the difference between an overwhelmed nhs and one that can cope.

Shutting things down wont stop people who want to break the rules in place imo

People are people after all its human nature for them to do what they want.

The more things that are shut, the less reasons overall there are for people to leave home. People have proved they can't sensibly manage the situation so firm action is the only way. Some will flout the guidance/rules/law but many will comply if they are made to realise the importance the government is placing on it, by the severity of the measures they impose.

I don't think it will be to long before we are talking of curfews! Looking at the slides today the whole country will be at the same level if the rules are flouted! People are still denying the virus! It's practically impossible to shield all the vulnerable as the list is massive, over 65s care homes ,overweight, BAME, preconditions, in remission and on and on! Would I feel differently if I was supporting a family and had a mortgage, not sure, but the reality is the hospitals and death rates are rising! And things are definitely won't be getting better!

Whitty: "the sooner we can get the R rate to 1 or below, the sooner we can get the virus under control"

No shit sherlock, then what?

Ease restrictions maybe?

I think if they do that, the infections will rise again.

I'm no statistician, as you know, but I think there's a pattern emerging

Interesting.
Alehouses closed all this time and still over 11,000 cases in two weeks. Goes to show hospitality has little if anything to do with the rise in UK.

I'm in tier 3
Just been in my pub but didn't have a pint, I had to have a meal and wasn't hungry but I'll call in for a few meals through the week, once fed I can stay for a few hours and drink what I like according to landlord

Who said it doesn't exist?
It's being spread by 10-29 year olds.
They can't close the schools because they'd have to pay all parents to stay at home so they've closed town/city centre bars where the twentysomethings playing tongue hockey after half a dozen Jager bombs are spreading it to all and sundry.
They should close McDonald's and KFC and other fast food outlets apart from drive through to stop them congregating.
Families and individuals going for meals and drinks in out of town pubs will continue because these aren't affecting the spread.
Mosques and churches and other congregations should also be stopped if they were serious about slowing it down.
Closing trendy bars where young are spreading it will have minimal overall effect without further measures. Closing Darby and Joan type clubs where the pink rinse brigade have a glass of sherry and a game of bingo twice a week achieves nothing but they have to close 'pubs' because they're not allowed to come out with what they mean:
If you were born after 1985 you've never followed a rule in your life and you can't be trusted in a pandemic so you are confined to your bedroom until it's over, everyone else can go about their business sensibly and observe social distancing and hygiene

Most people I see follow the rules as best they can , I wear a mask and sanitise my hands but I am not gonna stop going to see my ageing mum for instance. But life can’t be put on hold , kids need to be taught , they can’t afford a year or 2 of missed education, the country can’t afford that . Herd immunity is the way forward , the uni kids are helping towards that , it’s a virus , it’s gonna get some of us and that’s unfortunate but life shouldn’t stop / stall for everyone . It’s gonna takes years to get back from where we are now to where we were this time last year ...cinema trips , Oap coach trips , hotels , school outdoor adventure trips , shops etc etc and all these affect people losing their jobs and business ‘s , some one in government needs to have the balls to say enough is enough , get the nightingales open , wash your hands , wear a mask , get to work / schooling and crack on with it.
