Slow data transfer...

Yep, tried all those suggested plus many many more. I've got 3 hard drives and it's the same with all ... i've just been out to buy a brand new external to see what that's like so will report back soon.

Well how about that ... it must just be the hard drives getting old and clogged up. New external HDD fitted and data transfer from PC to the new one is running at a constant speed of between 180mb/s and 200mb/s.

The externals weren't the fastest on the old pc but with them being much slower on this one, I assumed the build or o/s was the issue but it must just be Windows 10 has a slower standard data transfer speed that Windows 7 for whatever reason.

Once i've done a back-up on the new external hdd. What would be best to get the old externals back to full health - would a format be sufficient do you think or would defragmenting etc. be required? ... I don't fancy defragmenting to be honest as with an 8TB external, it'd probably take several days?

Just a bit of an aside,
If this is a brand new windows install it might be a good idea to make a small partition and put Ubuntu on it.
OK, you may not normally use it, but it may be a really useful tool for you in the future for various reasons, eg. You could use it to directly read the files on your E2 box or E2 HDD, amongst other things.

Nice one , well done , I tested my pc on a usb3.0 stick and speeds were from 12 mb/s to 0 . it Is just a cheap ebuyer stick though . Haven’t got another usb3.0 to try it on. Which Hd did you buy ?

I bought the Western Digital 8TB drive from Argos which is currently on offer for £135 which is a great price for the size.

I think that because I do a lot with my externals, they've probably just got clogged up and slowed down over the years so I think deleting the partition and renewing 'should' do the old ones a world of good once i've backed them up, we'll see. I'll keep this thread updated with how i'm getting on with it.

dont defrag a ssd too often , its actually a trim function which will wear out the ssd quicker. uninstall the provided drivers for usb3 and allow windows to install its own. dont connect through a hub but connect directly to the usb port. check that you are using usb 3 not 2 . check the usb cable by replacement. having multiple apps open will affect the speed as it uses resources, dont have to many open at once. make sure you are using ntfs file system not fat . try removing half of your memory at a time to rule out dodgy ram. check the usb 3 seagate drive with seagates seatools. ive got two and they should easily transfer 80 Megabytes Per Second. they claim 160 Megabytes Per Second but thats not real world.

My externals are traditional mechanical hdd's. Don't worry, I won't be defragging my M.2 drive.

I don't have any USB 2.0 ports in the back of my computer except for the ones the keyboard and mouse are plugged into, all the rest are 3.1 Gen 2.

It seems that things are running much better at the moment. I'm transferring data currently from a Seagate external to another external and it's averaging 130-150 mb/s so i'm happy with that.

I have heard that quality replacement cables for these drives can have a positive impact on transfer speeds too so i've ordered one to give it a try.
