Cahill returns for Dubs

St Brigid's defender Barry Cahill is one of four changes to the Dublin team which will start against Galway tomorrow night at Parnell Park.

Cahill comes in at left half-back in place of Ger Brennan, who missed out through injuries, while the other changes in defence see Stephen Cluxton returning to goal and Rory O'Carroll coming back from Under 21 duty to replace Michael Fitzsimons at full-back.

At centre-field, manager Pat Gilroy has kept the partnership of Eamonn Fennell and Ross McConnell, meaning the only other changes comes in the attack, where Kevin Bonnar is preferred at left half-forward instead of Michael MacAuley, who starts his first league game this season for the Metropolitans on the bench.

Dublin (NFL v Galway): S Cluxton; P Conlon, Rory O'Carroll, P MacMahon; H Gill, C O'Sullivan, B Cahill; E Fennell, R McConnell; A Hubbard, P Flynn, K Bonner; D Henry, B Brogan, K McManamon. 👍

GPA granted formal recognition at GAA Congress

00026e4a189r.jpg

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have been granted formal recognition on a permanent basis by the GAA at Congress in Newcastle on Saturday.

The historic agreement was formally adopted into GAA rule after receiving the support of delegates at the Slieve Donard Hotel.

Having reached an 'interim agreement' last November, the GPA has now been granted formal recognition on a permanent basis.

Former President Nickey Brennan proposed the motion, speaking eloquently on the need to recognise the players' body.

'I want to now strongly recommend that we formally recognise the GPA,' Mr Brennan said.

The proposal was seconded by another former Uachtarán, Kerry delegate Sean Kelly.

'We would be going backwards at an almighty rate if we didn't give the players representation,' Mr Kelly said.

'I think it is a positive motion and it is well worked out. I think we should take a step forward today and preserve the amateur status of the Association."

Dessie Farrell, the Chief Executive of the GPA, said the amateur status of the GAA was in no way threatened by the agreement, stressing that giving the players' body formal recognition was a vital step in ensuring that 'disharmony' between players and County is addressed.

'We've seen the disharmony that can be caused by disputes between players and County Boards; this step will go a long way to ensure that this doesn't happen again,' said Farrell.

'This is a vote in favour of player welfare and it is a very important signal to send out to our players.'

Mark Conway, Tyrone, spoke out strongly against the motion, while delegates from Dublin, Waterford and Offaly all backed the motion.

Meanwhile, a motion proposing the introduction of a clock/hooter system to signal the conclusion of a game was passed at Congress on Saturday morning.

The motion, proposed by Wexford and backed by Westmeath, means the use of the new timing system will be implemented on a trial basis in the 2011 Allianz GAA National Leagues.

The hooter will be sounded following the notification by the fourth official of the finishing time including added time to be played.

Meanwhile, a proposal put forward to reward a scoring sideline cut with two points was rejected.

The rule change was proposed by Tipperary, but it did not get the required two-thirds majority.

A proposal by Mayo to make the wearing of gum shields mandatory in all games and training sessions up to and including Minor level was withdrawn.

The Uachtarán indicated that the matter will be sent back to the Medical Advisory Committee for discussion and a new motion will be put before Congress in 2011.

And about time too 👍

Rebels' firepower proves too much for Mayo.....

Cork 1-17 Mayo 0-12: Conor Counihan’s Rebels had just too much firepower for Mayo as they ran out eight-point winners to claim the Allianz National Football League Division One title at Croke park this afternoon.

Centre forward Donncha Goulding hit five points to give his side a 0-9 to 0-5 lead at the break, with Conor Mortimer keeping the westerners in the picture with three scores of his own.

Mortimer gave his side hope with two quick points after the break but it was to prove a false dawn as Cork upped the tempo to put the game away.

Daniel Goulding came to the fore as he picked off points at ease and the contest was over before he scored the game’s only goal in the 63rd minute as he finished with a haul of 1-5.

Galway 2-22 Cork 1-17

0001c235189r.jpg

Full-back and captain Shane Kavanagh led by example as Galway won their first Allianz NHL Division 1 title since 2004, with a 2-22 to 1-17 victory over Cork at Semple Stadium.

The crowd may have been 3,000 less than last year's final attendance, but the 14,200 paying customers at the Thurles venue were treated to a thrilling game of Championship intensity, particularly in the first half.

It did not take long for the fireworks to ignite, with Damien Hayes bulging the back of the Cork net with just a minute and 15 seconds gone on the clock.

The Portumna clubman cut in from the right corner, rounding Sean Og O hAilpin before pushing his side into a 1-00 to 0-00 lead with an angled shot.

Both sides were clinical in front of the posts during a keenly-contested opening half with Ben O'Connor's impressive sideline cuts, allied to John Gardiner's excellent long range efforts, delighting the Rebels supporters.

A first Andy Smyth point edged Galway into a 1-03 to 0-04 lead after 16 minutes, following good work by Hayes and Ger Farragher; but Cork's creative juices were beginning to flow.

Scores from Michael Cussen and Gardiner ensured the sides were level for the first time after 18 minutes, but Galway quickly responded.

Farragher was immense for the Tribesmen throughout this contest as his quick brace of points edged Galway 1-05 to 0-06 in front.

But Cork, hoping to seal a football-hurling league double, bounced back with a superb kicked goal from Cathal Naughton, after Ben O'Connor had done the groundwork.

The strike put Cork ahead for first time.

However, Cork's joy was shortlived. Joe Canning, one of the most dangerous forwards in the country, stepped up to the mark on a sunny evening at Semple.

The Portumna ace used his strength to firstly brush off corner back Brian Murphy'before rounding the inexperienced Eoin Dillon to fire a rasping shot past goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack.

With his first score of the game, the Galway full-forward certainly made his mark. Armed with a 2-05 to 1-06 buffer, John McIntyre's men would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of this game.

No more than three points seperated the sides over the next 12 minutes, before Farragher's fifth point of the final opened a four-point lead at the break at 2-12 to 1-11.

Joe Canning continued to prove his worth in the second half, landing a superb point within 30 seconds of the restart.

Despite Cork scoring three of the next four points, Galway proved to be top dogs in the second half, with Kavanagh and Ollie Canning starring in defence.

The Connacht side, winners of the Walsh Cup in February, hit three points in succession as Joe Canning, Smyth and Iarla Tannian added well-taken scores.

Pat Horgan, Kieran 'Fraggy' Murphy, Cathal Naughton and substitute Jerry O'Connor did their utmost to keep the Rebels in touch.

Galway could afford to strike 12 second half wides, while at the opposite end goalkeeper Colm Callanan produced some excellent saves.

He batted a stinging penalty effort from Horgan over the crossbar, and was assured under pressure from Cork's twin towers, Aisake O hAilpin and Michael Cussen.

Cork desperately needed a goal but they could not find a way past a stubborn and hard-working Galway defence, with substitute Joe Gantley firing over the insurance points for the new league champions.

After the game, GAA President Christy Cooney presented Galway skipper Kavanagh with the cup, which will give McIntyre's charges a serious boost heading into their Leinster Championship campaign.
