The only thing with a hdd is the spin up time. I haven't tried an SSD but a 128mb microsd in a usb caddy also works.
It's not about the media, it's about repartitioning and formatting properly.

Can't remember the last time I USB flashed. I use the lazy way and flash via the image or command line.

Its easier.
Just put the usb in the box and initialise it.
Menu, setup, system, storage device, click on your usb name and initialise it

correct , I thought flash expander had to be used with that model.

Might be a silly question, but are you putting the correct file on the usb stick. I must be the zgemma folder and not the zipped ipk file.

You should be able to network flash from the recovery menu.
Press and hold the power button on the remote when you power the box on.
