U-turn on mandatory Covid vaccinations for NHS and social care workers

Sajid Javid set to scrap requirements after warnings that jabs policy could lead to shortage of 80.000 workers.

Mandatory Covid jabs for NHS and social care workers are set to be scrapped, The Telegraph can reveal, after warnings of crippling staff shortages if the plan went ahead.

Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, will on Monday meet fellow ministers on the Covid-Operations Cabinet committee to rubber stamp the decision on the about-turn.

Multiple government sources said ministers are expected to end the requirement because the omicron Covid variant, now dominant in the UK, is milder than previous strains.

The move comes after warnings that almost 80,000 healthcare workers would be forced out of their jobs because they had declined to take two doses of a Covid vaccine.

The Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Midwives and the Royal College of GPs have all pushed for the requirement to be delayed, with warnings it would have a "catastrophic" impact.

The jab requirement for NHS workers was meant to come into force in April – making this Thursday, Feb 3, the last day on which staff could get their first jab in order to be fully vaccinated in time.

The legal requirement for care home staff to be fully vaccinated came into effect in November. An estimated 40,000 people lost their jobs over the policy. Under the new rules, they are expected to be able to return to work in the sector.

On Sunday night, care home representatives expressed fury at the handling of the issue, saying the flip-flopping had "devastated our workforce and brought providers to their knees".

The change of approach reflects Downing Street's increasing focus on how the UK must "learn to live with Covid" as the surge of omicron cases fades.

Well well well what a turn up for the books.
I bet all the care home staff will be partying all night long now in the knowing they still gotta work a million hours a week for a pittance wage. Another plan that backfired nearly as much as my car ffs 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No suprise, but do hope that patients who request to be treated by vaccinated staff only have their rights respected

Somehow, I can't imagine anyone in need of health care would request such a thing...

but then I've been listening to an Amercian comedian..

He said "If you're unvaccinated, you could catch Covid, spread covid and die from Covid, BUT if you're vaccinated you could catch Covid, spread Covid and die from Covid.... but you're vaccinated" lol

tbh I probably wouldn't but I know someone who is in and out of hospital that has already said she will ask to be treated by vacinated staff only, and to be honest it's her health and her rights should be respected.

It was never going to be introduced, I said as much months ago when it was first raised.
It was to serve one purpose, to coerce more people to get vaccinated, and they did, tens of thousands of them, so mission accomplished.

I'm not too sure I could agree that it is someone's right to be treated by a 'vaccinated person'. You see, I'm unvaccinated and I couldn't possibly see it as 'my right' to be treated by an "unvaccinated" health care worker.

You don't have a right to pick and choose who treats you. If they're qualified, that's enough. Surgeons/Doctor's/Nurses/Carers with HIV don't have to tell their patients they're positive. It's no one's business but their own.

to coerce more people to get vaccinated

Coercion. That's a conspiracy, apparently.

no you probably wouldn't but if someone beleives being treated by someone vaccinated is safer for her then she has a right for her beliefs to be respected, men/women ask the be treated by someone of their own gender because they think it is going to be embarasing to be treated by the oposite sex, it's not embarasing as the health care worker has seen it all before but their wishes are still respected

A person's sex is completely different and understandable. Someone's vaccine status or medical condition isn't anyone elses business.

Encourage might have been a better choice of word

You were right the first time.
Threatening someone with their job is coercion.

Anyone qualified to treat you be it vaccinated or not shouldn't make any difference to the patient nor is their right in danger if their request is refused because they want a doctor, nurse etc to treat them who are vaccinated.

Sure, an interesting way to look at it, but I don't believe it could be considered similar. You're speaking about "beliefs" which is not in your context even related to any recognised religious traditions. HiTeck makes a good point, and to add, not even employers can demand details of their employees medical status, so there's even less chance of that being shared with patients I would think... either by patients or employers.

I think anyone worried about being treated by an unvaccinated person should be more concerned about using a shopping trolley or visiting a supermarket.
