What's new

Shingles

Just a follow up incase anyone's interested how it affects mature people like myself :)

Its been over 3 weeks and the sharp pain is slowly going and I mean slow. I had what I'd class as 2 outbreaks,
1st one on the neck that gradually got worse like large boils.
The 2nd one was smaller but alot more back of ear on my ear and inside as well. The 2nd lot appeared 6 days after the first lot. These are still scabbed over while the necks just red were they were.
Those in around the ear are a right f##ker the actually wake you up as though someones pin pricked you and your ear swells like you've been proper slapped. I'm hoping over the next week's it's all gone.

I'm sure all the head pains will return with vengeance come 5pm Sunday

Glad to hear you are on the mend 🎉

You should have some optimism for Sunday. I'm dreading Friday night! I just don't want us to be embarrassed. It's great we're finally in a competition, but the results are inevitable 😢

Have some faith Besh:wink:

I'll rewatch Trainspotting tonight to get me all patriotic 😂

@ianw314 - you have a beautiful Lab as your profile pic. I've always had black Labs and love them. I've got a 3 year old black Lab called Wallace 🐶
Trainspotting H1B5 related ..... boooo
This my second black Lab ... Bailey 10 years old, he'd eat aw day if he could get away with it

The Trainspotting cover is also iconic. The poster of it sold a bucketload from your local Athena store! God, the racks of posters they had.
Apologies - this thread has been hijacked

glad your getting better mate! not sure if i missed it but did you get prescribed any medication for this?
My wife got shingles must have been 35 years back she was in agony but at the time I do not remember if there was any medicine or any thing for the pain.
So I do not know whether things have advanced since then.

but I have had my first shingles jab a few months back and due follow up one in a few weeks probably due to older age but you would think prevention is better why jabs not available to everyone , but possibly more damaging in older person.

I'm on the last legs and bar the odd mild neuropathic neck ear pain and red marks I'm not far off right.
My ears still tender so sometimes when I wack the finger in for an itchy ear I forget and I'm soon reminded I'm not quite there.
@urie
Yeah it's not a nice one which your missus will confirm that's for sure not something I want again in a hurry. It attacks the nerve endings and because it's neck ear head the heart of nerves and sh*t it's nasty pain. On a 1 to 10 I'll give it a 7, 9 been sciatica on a popped disc back in my 30's, that one haunts me.

There isn't much they can give you for Shingles bar anti viral and anti bacterial tablets. Strong anti depressants supposedly work well as they suppress nerve pain. Gabapentin was a massive help or me. I hit them hard so I could sleep.

All's I can say is, were a good bunch on here so I hope no one else gets it as it's not 1 bit nice

Been following this, honestly glad your feeling better bro!

No m8, just anti bacterial and anti viral. I think the bacteria tablets were to try and prevent any infections from the big spots and anti viral basically just to try and speed things up, abit like paracetamol for a cold lower temperature.
I'm glad it's coming to an end. I was totally ignorant to what Shingles actually was I'd not a clue till the pharmacist mentioned it then googling it I got wind.

It's very unpleasant and I'd hate to get it any older in life were your less able to fight it, I can totally see how it can do damage to the elderly as it comes when you have a low immune system

Not sure if you already said or if you feel comfortable answering, but I'm curious about your age? Do you think that played a big role in your recovery time? I remember my grandad always saying that the older he got, the worse and more battered he felt whenever he got sick. It makes me wonder if age really does have such a significant impact on how our bodies handle illnesses like Shingles.

I think like any illness it will affect people in different ways due to genetics.
But I would definitely say that recovery takes longer the older you get with certain illnesses and definitely with bone breaks and head injury.
The fitter you are will also play a factor.

100% age and general health play a big part in recovering from illness. My parents are 80 this year and are in reasonably good shape for their age. My mum recently had a generic cold/flu virus and it took her the best part of a month to recover. If she had the same virus 10 years ago, it would probably only have taken her 2 weeks to get over it. It's just getting older and your immune system not being as strong.

I do not live like a saint, but staying active and trying to eat well will pay dividends the older you get.

I do try to stay active, but im lazy simple as that, i do swim and i do go to the gym sadly only 1-3 times a week, but its better than nothing i suppose haha

Everyone aged between 70 and 79 years is eligible for the shingles vaccine up to 79 years of age. If you are 65 on or after 1 September 2023 you are also eligible for your shingles vaccine. If you have a severely weakened immune system you will be eligible for shingles vaccine from 50 years of age.
