Five arrests in 'fully loaded' Kodi streaming box raids

Five people have been arrested, accused of selling set-top boxes modified to stream subscription football matches, television channels and films for free.

The sale of so-called "fully loaded Kodi boxes" has been called a "top priority" by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact).

The five traders were arrested in early morning raids.

Fact said it believed the suspects had made in the region of £250,000 selling the devices online.

Kodi is free software built by volunteers to bring videos, music, games and photographs together in one easy-to-use application.

Some shops sell legal set-top boxes and TV sticks, often called Kodi boxes, preloaded with the software.

The developers behind Kodi say their software does not contain any content of its own and is designed to play legally owned media or content "freely available" on the internet.

However, the software can be modified with third-party add-ons that provide access to pirated copies of films and TV series, or free access to subscription television channels.

The sale of these so-called "fully loaded" boxes is currently the subject of a legal test.

The five arrests were made in Bolton, Bootle, Cheadle, Manchester and Rhyl.

Kieron Sharp, director general of Fact, said the arrests "should send out a clear warning to anyone involved in the sale and distribution of illegal set-top boxes".

"Set-top boxes loaded with apps and add-ons allowing access to copyright infringing material are very much illegal and anyone involved in selling these boxes should not be surprised to receive a knock on the door," he said.

Fact said it had co-ordinated its "day of action" on behalf of the Premier League and subscription television providers BT, Sky and Virgin Media.

The five have been released on bail following questioning.

Said it before and i'll say it again, these greedy money-grabbing bastards selling these fully loaded android boxes all over the internet are going to be the reason kodi and Mobdro etc cease to exist.
The lazy people who buy these boxes rather than buy a basic box and add the required stuff themselves, which takes a few minutes also share a portion of the blame.

Should raid sky and virgin headquarters for the prices that the charge the general public these days :slap:

£250,000 only pocket money no harm done lol
Although I guarantee they get longer than all the sex offenders I see in the papers walking away with a slap on the wrist.

I agree with you there dilly 100%, the system is broken, very very broken but they continue to give harsher punishment when somebody is missing out on some money. The larger and richer the corporation is, the longer the sentence for taking some of their ££.

Children? they don't have a voice and there is no visible deterrent for these sickos to think about. Maybe one day the country will sort where priorities really lie. It isn't Pre-loaded Kodi boxes!

Rant over :-)

they have no chance in stoping the sale of these box's

I think they do and will. Once these test cases are finally over and they are proven to be illegal, trading standards accompanied by the police will have a field day with all the sellers.

The people who sell them publicly are ruining it for everyone else just like public torrent sites have!

They'll stop selling them sharpish if & when the people behind kodi get sick of all the negative headlines and bin it off.

I agree 100%. Unfortunately though i don't see that ever happening as long as the so called ''upper classes'' are the ones pulling the strings in this country.
We all know those 12 toed inbred sickos bend over backwards for the big corporations and also love a bit of the other.

Easy solution to this sell boxes vanilla then when plugged in and started up, there is one big button in the middle of the screen saying "press here for magic" then the boxes download the fully loaded wizard restarts and everyone's happy, the box sellers are not selling fully loaded boxes and the end user can be as lazys as they want!

More like what sly have said they have lost on there monthly fees. if the users had got a sly sub, but what they don't get is that they would not ever get an sly sub at then prices.

its about time sly was held to account on its pricing. has are the BBC

It's a tad harsh to refer to the people selling these boxes as money-grabbers. You could easily refer to those buying them as ultra incompetent or even lazy. After all, there is so much information online about how to do it, Android or Pi, that there should be almost no excuse. Even the most dim witted of PC user can follow instructions can't they? Clearly not, hence these guys are able to sell their boxes.

I think context is key here and this is where more info is required. I can't see how selling a vanilla Kodi box is remotely illegal, although I'm sure the CPS will find a way. If it's loaded with a build? All bets are off.

Same with subs for dreambox. There's a fella where I live with a Facebook page!!! He even has an office, staff etc. It's not a closed page either. Makes a fortune. Sells shitty subs for 50 quid a pop and tells you that you need 2 subs for a twin tuner box. Only a matter of time before that house of cards comes crashing down around him and I'm sure there's plenty more like him.

Doing it so openly will only get him nicked sooner. My sub 'supplier' is word of mouth only. I'm not even sure he'd be happy with me passing on his details online tbh. That kind of operation makes it nearly untraceable and also makes people think twice before giving his details to someone 'who might grass'.

LINK REMOVED BY ADMIN.

what would you call the people behind that if not money-grabbers? Look at some of the prices.
A £35 amazon stick that they've spent a few minutes putting a build on and selling for £65.
Paradox is a cracking build but those prices are taking the absolute piss.
Even selling £20 powerline adapters for almost double the price.
