My mate's pc was blue screening, so he has got in to the system recovery section but it now wants a password from a hotmail account that hes not used for years, he got microsoft to rest the password but the pc still has the original password until it boots and connects to the net again.

Is there anyway to find the password or recover the pc with out wiping it ??

If windows 10 uses a Microsoft account there is no way to reset the password locally. The only way is via the online account for that email address. I had this with a windows 8 box a while ago and there was no way around it with anything I use to remove local passwords.

I never setup a Windows 10 computer using an online account for this reason. It is only since Windows 8 that they introduced whit online account rubbish, personally I see no point in it.

This is part of the problem, the pc failed and he has had the microsoft account reset online to his phone, but the pc wont start up or even in recovery mode without him putting in his old password, then he can boot the pc and it will reset on line,

I used a norton gost image a few years back by booting from cdrom, that was on xp and it allowed me to access all the files and i was able to save off the pics and documents, just wondering if an updated version would work with windows 10 ??

Got the Kon boot software will give this a try tonight, if i cant get it going will try another hard drive, as long as he gets his pics off then he's happy.

He has tried the microsoft update via phone and got a new password, but the pc is still asking for his old one, i will know more when i go round later.

Yer no probs its worth a try, But like I say if the drive is on its way out the best solution might be new drive anyway.
Plus nowadays with PC you can always take the drive out plug it in another computer and get your stuff off it that way? (It nearly always pops in my computer when you plug the drive in) Just a bit of hassle having to load a new windows on but its always good to have a fresh start now an again. :)
Good luck.

Few options to try hopefully i will get everything back for him, then it's a ssd and a new windows for him,

Cheers guys,

I`ve used a windows 7 password reset disk before and it works on Win 10. It will allow you to reset the administrator account to a blank password. sign in as the admin then under computer management, local users and groups, users, you should be able to reset the password for the said account?

It won't when the account is not local. If the user created or used an online account when setting up Windows 10 you can't reset the password. I have certainly never found a way anyway and would be interested if there is a way to do it.

Guys thanks for all the info, when I got there he was still trying old passwords and it must of been his 100th attempt and bingo he got in, so managed to recover everything and back it up, just needs a new drive now to rebuild it or I have advised to set up a nas drive and back everything up to that,

Thanks for all the advise and software i'm sure it will come in handy at some point,
