Surly Amazon will lose millions. And people always find a way to sideload.

Amazon will lock down the new vega OS and that will stop anyone side loading on the newer devices that use it. They are not interested in people using third party apps only selling their own products.

What's your recommendation for alternative?

I've got the onn 4k plus. Nice box but Google also blocking same apps as amazon. Old firesticks should be OK. But as above Vega may stop sideload ING. Will have to wait and see. Be interesting

Get a genuine android Tv stick or box and you shouldn't have any issues going forward.

Best option for third party apps is a device running AOSP because google have no control over the os and what you install.

I saw the Firestick sale price and was tempted as I need a new device for my bedroom, but have been dubious about buying one due to the possible issues with the new operating Vega OS, so have held out. I'm not sure what difference this will make to somebody like me who only watches Iptv supplied with a subscription, for watching Sport, movies, catch up etc.
Do you have any recommendations for buying a box running AOSP please?

I don’t think you have to worry about the current FS as they all still run on Fire OS and will be supported for several years.
Not sure when they will actually release a FS with the new Vega OS as they have not made an official announcement.
Maybe end of year early 2026.
