Paddy Andrews is dropped from Dublin panel

00026e96189r.jpg

Wednesday, 12 May 2010

Paddy Andrews has surprisingly been left out of the Dublin championship panel which won't be finalised by manager Pat Gilroy until later this week.

The St Brigid's clubman, who made his championship debut in 2008, has played in both defence and attack for the Metropolitans but did not feature for the county in this year's National League.

During that time, he helped DCU to win the Sigerson Cup, while only last week he did feature for Dublin in a challenge match against Cavan.

However, he now finds himself outside of Gilroy's extended 40-man squad which will be trimmed ahead of Dublin's encounter with Wexford on 13 June.

It is also expected that Jason Sherlock will not feature in the summer campaign.

McDonnell and Farragher win GPA awards

Steven McDonnell (Armagh) and Ger Farragher (Galway) have been named as Opel GPA Players of the League in football and hurling respectively, at the inaugural 2010 Awards in Dublin today.

The awards recognise the outstanding contribution both players made to their county's performances in the 2010 Allianz National Football and Hurling Leagues.

McDonnell revelled in his role as Armagh captain during the spring and he was pivotal in leading his team to league promotion and a Division 2 title victory over rivals Down where McDonnell delivered six points, five from play.

Galway hurler Farragher was received the award after playing a leading role for his county throughout the league campaign. His display against Dublin in particular, where he dominated midfield and scored nine points, was significant as it secured a league final place for Galway.

Farragher also excelled in the decider against Cork and his performance, which included six points, was crucial to his county's victory.

DUBLIN 1-13 KILDARE 0-16
(After extra-time)

Three Harry Dawson points in extra-time saw the Dubs earn a deserved replay in this pulsating Leinster MFC quarter-final at Newbridge on Saturday afternoon.
His heroics were not confined to extra-time as he played a key role in the final minutes of normal time when Dublin looked doomed.
Dublin forced extra-time after trailing by five points as the game ticked into the final minute of normal time, 0-13 to 0-8, when Dawson finished to the net in the 60th minute following great interplay in the forward line.
Two minutes into injury time Ferghal Duffy converted a free and in the fourth minute of added time Seán Stewart stroke over an excellent equalising point from 35 metres.
In extra-time Kildare started much the better and points from Fergal Conway, Fionn Dowling and Pádraig Fogarty put them into a 0-16 to 1-10 lead by the sixth minute of the first period of extra-time (ten minutes a half).
But Dublin showed terrific courage to mount the second comeback with Dawson illustrating great long-range accuracy to keep the Dubs in the Championship.
In normal time Dublin started well but failed to translate good scoring opportunities into scores and with wind advantage should have led by more than 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time.
Seventeen minutes into the second half the game looked to be turned against the Dubs when Stewart cracked a shot off the crossbar from close range and Kildare broke forward and would have goaled themselves but for a superb save from keeper Colin Murphy.
But Kildare did score the next four points of the game as they upped their game and capitalised on a series of unforced errors by Dublin.
However, the Dubs refused to buckle and threw caution to the wind in the final minutes of normal time to earn extra-time.

SCORERS - Dublin: H Dawson 1-7, F Duffy 0-3 (0-1f), A Caffrey 0-2 (0-1f), S Stewart 0-1. Kildare: P Fogarty 0-4, L McGovern (0-3f), F Dowling 0-3 each, P Cocoman 0-2, P Cribben, F Conway, N Kelly 0-1 each.

28 May 2010

Dublin hurling boss Anthony Daly has been boosted by the return of full back Tomas Brady and wing forward Peter Kelly to competitive action.

Both made their comebacks from injury in Dublin's 2-16 to 1-13 challenge match victory over Daly's native Clare on Wednesday night. Brady had been sidelined with minor ligament damage, while Lucan Sarsfields clubman Kelly had a hamstring complaint.

Brady and Kelly are now expected to feature against Laois in Sunday week's Leinster SHC quarter-final, but doubts still remain about the fitness of attackers David Treacy and David 'Dotsy' O'Callaghan.👍

DUBLIN 1-13 KILDARE 2-10
(After extra-time)

Another thriller, extra-time again and after over three hours of football these couties can still not be separated after serving up an excellent contest in this ESB Leinster MFC quarter-final at Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon.
The counties will meet for at least a fourth time this spring/summer - Kildare winning the first round clash before the Dubs emerged as their opponents for this last-eight contest - post-Leaving Cert (possibly on Wednesday, June 30, venue tbc) before the Longford will their semi-final opponents.
For a lot of normal time Dublin were playing catch-up after the concession of a tenth minute goal when the Lilywhites capitalised clincially on a misplaced Dublin sideline before Pádraig Fogarty kept his nerve impressively to fire to the net.
By half-time in normal time that goal separated the sides, 1-4 to 0-4, but the Dubs kicked the first three points on the restart with Fearghal Duffy (free) and super-sub Philly Ryan slotting two from play to bring the sides level within 15 minutes of the restart.
However, with Kildare totally on top at midfield the responded with two Liam McGovern scores (including one free) to regain the lead but they could not shake off a very determined Dublin who refusing to lie down and a 60th minute point from Seán Stewart and superb Adam Caffrey point off his left foot in the fourth minute of injury-time forced the game into extra-time for the second weekend running.
Dublin started extra-time the stronger with points from Jack McCaffrey and Fearghal Duffy, following a lay-off from Ryan, but Kildare responded through McGovern and Cocoman as the sides entered the half-time interval in extra-time still deadlocked, Dublin 0-12 Kildare 1-9.
Within the opening minute of the second half Dublin struck for what could have been the decisive score when Ryan fielded a great ball from Colm Woods before sliding it to the net.
But three minutes later the Lilywhites were awarded a controversial penalty for a footblock when it looked to have been ball off thigh and Kevin Feely coolly converted the spotkick.
A Ryan free put Dublin back in front entering the final minute of extra-time but in the second minute of injury-time Feely ensured there would be another day out.

SCORERS - Dublin: P Ryan 1-4 (0-1f), C Diamond 0-3 (0-2f), S Stewart, P Duffy (0-1f) 0-2 each, A Caffrey, J McCaffrey 0-1 each. Kildare: P Fogarty 1-2, K Feely 1-1 (1-0 pen), L McGovern 0-3 (0-1f), F Dowling, P Cribbin, K Hurley, P Cocoman 0-1 each.

Cork v Tipperary

They’re back. After three years in Tipperary’s shadow, Cork re-emerged as a hurling powerhouse with a stunning 3-15 to 0-14 destruction of the Munster champions at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday.

Aisake Ó hAilpín had a hand in each of Cork’s goals and scored their third after an outstanding game at full-forward for the Rebels. The giant Na Piarsaigh man tormented Tipperary full-back Padraic Maher for the first 23 minutes, setting up two goals for his partner in a two-man inside forward line, Patrick Horgan, before he ended the game as a contest by hitting the back of the net with ten minutes left.

It was an electrifying display from Ó hAilpín, who made his Senior debut in the three-point defeat to Tipperary last year, the lanky full-forward giving the kind of performance his older brother, Setanta, did for Cork during their period of dominance in the middle of the last decade.

However, Ó hAilpín was just one of several Cork heroes on the day. Eoin Cadogan, who missed most of the last eight weeks with a shin problem, was awesome at full-back. The Douglas man dominated rookie Tipperary full-forward Brian O’Meara and made a string of inspirastional catches on the edge of the square.

The Cork half-back line gave the best answer possible to the critics that were quick to write them off after the league final by completely dominating the game. They cleaned up under the Tipperary puck outs, as Ronan Curran and John Gardiner monopolised possession which they utilised cleverly to feed Aisake Ó hAilpín on the edge of the square.

Tipperary’s forwards started promisingly, but they were completely outplayed in the second half and the Premier men went 33 minutes in that period without a score from play, with Timmy Hammersley, a second half substitute, finally ending a miserable run with three minutes to go. Indeed, Eoin Kelly’s seven points from placed balls aside, the Tipperary attack completely misfired, with their half-forward line, in particular, failing to live with Cork’s intensity and constant harrying.

Cork led 2-5 to 0-10 at the break, but five successive points in a six-minute spell after the restart saw them take control. Tipperary were hanging on by their fingertips and needed a superb save from their goalkeeper, Brendan Cummins, to stay in the game. Aisake Ó hAilpín was still causing panic every time he got the ball and should have sent Cork into an unassailable lead in the 44th minute but he was penalised for taking too many steps after getting away from Paul Curran, who was moved to full-back in the first half. He had an even better chance later in the half, but he pulled his shot badly wide with only Cummins to beat after evading Curran once again.

However, he was not to be denied the goal his heroic efforts deserved. With ten minutes left, Jerry O’Connor found him all alone on the edge of the square with a clever pass and Ó hAilpín danced around Cummins to leave Cork 3-13 to 0-12 ahead.

Cork’s dominance of the first quarter stemmed from the champions’ inability to deal with Dónal Óg Cusack’s short puck outs. The Cork goalkeeper looked for Curran and, particularly, Gardiner in the half-back line, who secured clean possession to feed the irrepressible Aisake Ó hAilpín.

The Cork full-forward completely dominated Padraic Maher and his finger prints were on two goals inside the first 23 minutes.

The first came just 13 minutes in, as Gardiner delivered a trademark long ball into the younger of the Ó hAilpín brothers, who stuck a paw into the air, turned and kicked past Cummins. However, Maher had piggy backed him as he attempted to shoot and referee Paddy Kelly had already signalled for a penalty. Patrick Horgan stepped up and drilled the ball into the top corner.
index.php

Aisake Ó hAilpín’s presence on the edge of the square was causing panic in the Tipperary defence and a minute earlier he might have hit the back of the net himself had Cummins not made a brilliant block.

Tipperary led by 0-3 to 0-1 at that stage after Cusack had denied Lar Corbett with a neat save seven minutes in. The strong-running Corbett – who scored two points from play in the first half – won a breaking ball in the inside forward line was clear on goal, but his shot was deflected away by the Cork goalkeeper.

Padraic Maher’s day of torment continued when he was booked for a foul on Ó hAilpín and Ben O’Connor dropped over the free to leave Cork 1-3 to 0-3 ahead. However, things got even worse for the Munster champions midway through the half when Cork snaffled a second goal. Horgan again was the beneficiary of Ó hAilpín’s athleticism, as he cracked a super shot into the top corner in front of the Blackrock end supporters after the Cork full-forward had spilled possession after winning another clean catch.

Tipperary manager Liam Sheedy immediately moved to reduce the damage and Padraic Maher was switched out to wing-back, with Curran going into full-back and Michael Cahill moving back to mark Horgan in the corner. The move worked, but the damage had already been done.

Tipperary did finish the half the stronger as they came to grips with Cusack’s puck outs and started to win some ball in the half-forward line. John O’Brien scored two points from play and Brendan Maher’s score just before the break left just two points between the sides at half-time.

But the damage had already been done to Tipperary’s confidence and they were a spent force when Cork hit five points on the bounce after the restart.

It was hill :) like the Cork of old, people cant write Cork off and yesterday proved that :)

A cracking Bank Holiday encounter was level seven times, hung in the balance right until the final stages, before the experienced Decies pushed for home with a powerful surge.

Clare boss Ger O'Loughlin handed out six debuts, and by the end of the game, 10 members of last year's all-Ireland U21 winning team had joined the action.

But it was the Waterford bench that turned the tide after the banner had gone in at the break with a four points lead.

Declan Prendergast fired over three superb points, with Seamus Prendergast and Ken McGrath also coming on to shoot inspirational scores.

Despite their inexperience, Clare embraced the challenge with confidence and conviction, and looked intent on causing an upset with their high energy approach in the first half.

It looked as if the script was top be followed to the letter when Stephen Molumphy and John Mullane flighted over early Deice points.

But Clare, with Pat Donnellan and Cian Dillon performing heroics at the back, tackled like demons, and forced a series of turnovers which created the scoring opportunities for Sean Clancy, Jonathan Clancy and John Conlon to put away.

By the 21st minute, they had opened out a 0-8 to 0-3 lead, with rookie midfielder Nicky O'Connell helping himself to three excellent scores.

Eoin Kelly kept a flagging Waterford side in touch from long range frees, and Mullane executed an overhead gem for the second time.

Waterford had narrowed the gap back to two points when Banner full forward Darach Honan picked up a loose ball to blast home a brilliant 33rd minute goal.

Kelly and Kevin Moran responded with points, but at the break, it was the Clare men who led by 1-10 to 0-9.

Once the Decies got the wind in their backs in the second half, they carried a much greater threat.

With 37-year-old veteran Tony Browne driving his younger colleagues on from the half back line, they set about dismantling Clare's lead.

Kevin Moran, Molumphy, Maurice Shanahan and Mullane were all on target, with Declan Prendergast firing over three gems.

Clare were far from finished, though, and went back in front through substitute Cormac O'Donovan and Honan.

But Waterford had the will to produce a response each time their opponents registered, and late scores from Kelly, McGrath and Seamus Prendergast sealed the win and a place in the decider.
