john kennedy forced to retire from football

Newsroom Staff
IT is with great regret that Celtic Football Club has to announce today that defender John Kennedy has been forced to retire from football.

The 26-year-old defender came through the Youth Academy at Celtic Park and over the past 10 years made 45 appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

Everyone at Celtic Football Club and the whole Celtic family is saddened at the news and wishes John and his family all the best for the future.

John Kennedy said: “It is with great regret that I have made this decision. However, given the medical advice which I received, this is the right decision.

“Clearly, this is very disappointing for me and my family. However, this is something I will accept and come to terms with.

“I have enjoyed my time with Celtic immensely and I would like to thank everyone at the club and all the Celtic fans for all the support and backing they have given me during my time.

“It has been an absolute privilege to play for such a great club and of course I wish the team the very best for the future."

Celtic Manager Tony Mowbray said: “For John, his family and indeed everyone at the club, this is extremely sad news.

“John is a very fine footballer and a great man, someone who served Celtic with such determination and integrity and someone who had all the qualities required to become such a wonderful player. Indeed, he was already well down that path when he sustained such a terrible injury.

“I know that whenever he represented Celtic, he did so with a tremendous passion for the club and he was someone who gave his all in every game he played.

“It really is tragic that John's career has been cut so short in this manner. We will be giving John our full backing.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell commented: “Everyone at the club is devastated at the news of John's retirement.

“John is a young man who has been an absolute credit to this club and someone who had one of the brightest futures in the game. We are all deeply saddened by this news.

“John is someone who fought his way through the Celtic ranks to become a first-team star - something which is a magnificent tribute to his talent and ability.

"No-one will ever forget how he performed in the Nou Camp that famous evening back in 2004 and no-one will ever forget how he was so cruelly injured in his prime.

“We thank John for everything he has given us - the club will be doing all it can to provide John with as much support as possible.”

celts beaten by late strikes

Gregor Kyle
CELTIC were knocked out by a couple of late sucker punches at Tannadice, losing 2-1 following two goals in the closing stages from Dundee United.
Tony Mowbray’s men had looked like they were in control for large parts of the match, particularly in a first half that they dominated and took the lead through a Barry Robson penalty.
But they could not hold out for the win and fell to two goals in the last seven minutes of the game, with Jon Daly and Darren Dods scoring for the home side.
There were doubts as to whether or not this game would actually go ahead, with heavy rainfall and flooding in the week before and a recent game at Tannadice being abandoned midway through the second half.

However, a pitch inspection was passed with flying colours and the surface was in excellent condition.
An unlikely suspect fired off the first shot in the eighth minute, when the busy Marc Crosas put in a well-timed challenge in midfield and released Andy Hinkel.
Cutting inside the German full-back, who has one goal from his previous 76 appearances for the club, broke forward and unleashed a low, left-footed shot that was saved by Nicky Weaver.
Celtic continued to look bright and busy in the first half, with Crosas particularly influential and Marc-Antoine Fortune also had two great chances which were set up by Aiden McGeady.
On both occasions the striker was hesitant, opting to take a touch when put through on goal and United were able to recover and clear their lines.
McGeady also teed up Scott McDonald ten minutes before half-time and saw his team-mate swivel and miss the ball six yards in front of goal, then moments later Hinkel got to the bye-line and drove a ball across the face of goal that was deflected away from Fortune.
The pressure continued to build in the lead-up to half-time, although the home side did threaten with one quick counter-attack before half-time when Jennison Myrie-Williams ran at the Celtic defence with Danny Cadamarteri unmarked and in space to his left.

The United winger failed to spot his team-mate and was brought down by Glenn Loovens, with Paul Dixon blazing the resulting free kick over the bar. This was a rare chance in a half that was mainly dominated by Celtic.
Perhaps sensing that Tony Mowbray’s men were taking control of the game, United immediately sought to make an impact at the start of the second half and Myrie-Williams fired off an early warning shot.
This was followed by another attempt in the 53rd minute and when Prince Buaben was given time to shoot from 30 yards out he forced an excellent save from Lukas Zaluska. Then, from the resulting corner, Damian Casalinuovo hit the crossbar with a header.
It was a little reminder, if ever it was needed, of the quality in this United team and Mowbray made the first change of the match, bringing on Georgios Samaras for Fortune. Within minutes of his arrival the Greek sent a ball fizzing across the edge of the six yard box which McDonald failed to reach.
With play quickening, it took an excellent challenge from Gary Caldwell to block Casalinuovo as he attempted to get on the end of a Myrie-Williams cut back.
Then, in the next break forward, Robson wrong-footed Dods and jinked into the penalty box, where the Dundee United man brought him down. Robson stepped up to take the penalty himself and sent Weaver the wrong way to give Celtic the lead.
However they failed to add to their tally or take full control of the game and, moments after the goal, they were given a warning when Daly had a glorious chance with his first touch after coming on as a substitute, heading the ball over the bar from just a couple of yards out.

Then, with eight minutes to go, the Irishman again found himself unmarked, in yards of space and able to climb unchallenged and head home a Danny Swanson corner.
It was a disappointing way to concede, but Celtic failed to learn their lesson and with seconds of regulation time remaining, Swanson swung in another corner and Andy Webster blocked the run of Loovens, allowing Dods a free header, which he duly bulleted home. It gave Celtic no time to equalise.

celtic bow out with impressive win

Gregor Kyle
CELTIC'S aim was to maintain the momentum and at least take a win from this final UEFA Europa League home game and Tony Mowbray and his players succeeded on this front, with goals from Georgios Samaras and Barry Robson sealing a comfortable 2-0 win over group leaders, Hapoel Tel-Aviv.

However, with Hamburg earning a 2-0 win over Rapid Vienna in Germany, Celtic’s hopes of progressing to the knock-out stages of this competition are over.

The players were clearly determined to go out fighting and there was a very positive start as they passed the ball crisply and a header from Barry Robson clipped the arm of Walid Badir inside the penalty box.

Then, with four minutes on the clock, Scott McDonald went through on goal and placed his shot past Vincent Enyeama, but was caught offside.

Finnish referee, Tony Asumaa, was eager to let play flow, allowing advantage and waving away a couple of early borderline challenges. He also rightly ignored Hapoel’s appeals for a penalty when Etey Shechter went down in the box after a well-timed tackle from Landry NGuemo.

Then, with one explosive burst of pace in the 15th minute, Aiden McGeady tore down the left wing, breezed by Douglas Da Silva and cut the ball back from the byline for McDonald, who forced a save from Hapoel’s Nigerian keeper.

Just seven minutes later, both players combined again to help Celtic take the lead. Right from the off, McDonald had looked in the mood and it was his quick free-kick that sent McGeady racing for the byline. The winger then lifted his cross to the edge of the six-yard box where Samaras powered his header home.

Perhaps with the memory of Hapoel's comeback in Israel in mind, Celtic immediately went in pursuit of another. McDonald continued to pester and harry, linking well with his team-mates, while McGeady saw his low drive blocked by Enyeama.

Barry Robson also saw the ball bobble away from him when he broke into the box and fired at goal, just minutes before the midfielder sent a free kick whizzing inches over the bar.

Then, 10 minutes before half-time, Samaras saw his effort clip the post after he was picked out by McDonald, with Robson’s follow up blocked on the line.

There was just one moment for concern in the Celtic ranks, when Gil Vermouth played a tempting ball in to the feet of Shechter, who could only steer his shot over the bar, but overall it had been impressive first half from Mowbray’s men.

Hapoel manager, Eli Guttman, made two changes at half-time and within seconds of kick-off Vermouth had burst forward and rattled a shot off the legs of NGuemo.

The Israeli midfielder had been a stand-out in the opposition ranks, quick and direct in his running, although Shechter was the next to threaten, aiming an attempt at the post which Lukasz Zaluska got down to touch wide.

However, Celtic remained in control and in the 68th minute, Robson put the result beyond doubt with a swerving free-kick that was curled around the wall into the bottom corner past the fingertips of Enyeama.

With the game effectively over as a contest Mowbray protected McGeady, bringing on Lee Naylor and there were just a couple of chances for the visitors, with Shechter thwarted by Zaluska, Maaran Lala sending a header wide and Nemanja Vucicevic seeing a shot deflected wide.

But Celtic had chances too, with Enyeama scrambling to stop an own goal, Marc Antoine Fortune denied and the outstanding McDonald missing a gilt-edged chance in the closing minutes.

When the final whistle sounded the Hapoel players were able to celebrate, with the Hamburg result also booking their place in the next round.

However, from a Celtic perspective the performance and result will only heighten confidence as the players focus on regaining the league crown and a return to domestic business against Aberdeen this Saturday.

Samaras scored twice in Celtic's 3-0 win over Aberdeen

A Georgios Samaras double helped Celtic record a convincing league win over 10-man Aberdeen.
Andreas Hinkel set up Scott McDonald's 39th-minute strike for the opener. and seven minutes into the second-half Samaras nodded in a close-range header.
Jerel Ifil picked up Aberdeen's fifth red card in five matches after he aimed kick at the Greece international.
Samaras then doubled his tally with a fine solo effort, chipping past Jamie Langfield with 15 minutes remaining.
Keeper Artur Boruc returned for Celtic after recovering from a knee injury, while Aberdeen skipper Mark Kerr was suspended and Chris Maguire and David Grassi returned to the bench.
Aberdeen's reshuffled line-up also had Lee Miller alone up front, with Andrew Considine, Jerel Ifil midfielder Gary McDonald called in.
Barry Robson broke free on the right in the 12th minute and lined up Landry N'Guemo, but the man from Cameroon chose poorly with his pass on the edge of the area, and the attack fizzled out.

Moments later, former Celtic man Charlie Mulgrew fired in a hopeful shot from 25 yards out that drifted wide of Boruc's right-hand post.
Danny Fox powered away on a solo run from his own half and outran the Aberdeen defence before striking for goal, but Langfield parried wide.
With 20 minutes played, Samaras ran to the goal-line and sent a sharp cross into the six-yard area, but slightly over-cooked it and McDonald was left wanting.
As the half-hour mark approached, Aiden McGeady outstripped the Dons back four to set up McDonald, but the Australian's feeble shot was wildly off-target and posed no significant threat.

Ten minutes later, McGeady danced his way around the Aberdeen defence but the move failed to produce a result.

The stalemate was broken six minutes from the break when Hinkel latched on to a ball on the right-hand side and sent in a low ball for McDonald to fire past Langfield for the opener.
Fox sent a header past the Dons goal as the half-time whistle approached Marc Crosas blasted in a long-range effort that sailed wide as the players headed in.

Shortly after the restart, Gary Caldwell powered in a short-range header that worked its way back out of the Dons defence, but Aiden McGeady flighted flighted in a searching cross for Samaras to double Celtic's tally with a cute header from six yards out.
Ifil was sent in for an early bath in the 55th minute after the Englishman followed through on an aerial challenge with Samaras and delivered a kick at the Greek's thigh that was spotted by the stand-side assistant referee.

Langfield pulled off another spectacular save from a 20-yard Samaras strike as the hour mark approached.
Aberdeen struggled to make an impact on the match as Celtic raised the tempo with the extra man advantage.
A Glenn Loovens header from a Robson corner was cleared off the line by former Rangers man Maurice Ross in the 70th minute.

A well-worked sequence from N'Guemo and Crosas failed to produce a third goal before Samaras doubled his tally with a fine solo effort.
The Greece international latched on to a long ball from McGeady in the 76th minute and collected himself in front of Langfield before casually flicking the ball into the back of the net.

A blinding run from N'Guemo ended with the on-loan Nancy midfielder striking the Aberdeen post and Samaras's header on the rebound was cleared off the line.
Celtic midfielder Niall McGinn struck the post in the dying minutes as Aberdeen attempted to stem the flow.

Spirited Celts produce rapid response

David Friel

PAUL McGOWAN scored a last-minute equaliser as Celtic fought back from 3-0 down to earn a deserved draw against Rapid Vienna and pull off one of the most dramatic comebacks in the club’s history.

The Hoops were caught cold in the Austrian snow as Rapid struck three times in the first 19 minutes. Nikica Jelavic’s double and a goal from Hamdi Salihi put the Austrians in complete control.

It was a disastrous start but Celtic showed unbelievable character and desire to bounce back and put Rapid under huge pressure. Marc-Antoine Fortune scored before half-time and then made it 3-2 as Celtic laid siege to the away goal.

Tony Mowbray’s experimental side created a host of other chances but looked to have come up just short until McGowan, making his first competitive start, fired home a stunning volley in the last minute to send the Celtic supporters wild.

The Hoops’ European campaign is over for another year but the manager will be happy with much of what he saw in Vienna. Barring the first 20 minutes, Celtic more than matched Rapid and could even have won the game.

Mowbray hinted that he would make several changes for this match and he did just that. No fewer than seven players dropped out from the team that beat Motherwell, with the likes of McGowan, Willo Flood, Paul Caddis and Niall McGinn all given a chance to shine.

Stephen McManus returned at the heart of defence and captained the side, while Mark Wilson was deployed at left-back. Fortune started following his wonder winner at Fir Park. Aiden McGeady, Georgios Samaras and Danny Fox were all given the night off completely.

There had been a light dusting of snow in Vienna on Thursday afternoon but a pre-match blizzard meant the pitch was completely covered by the time the teams started warming up. The snow was cleared for kick-off but the match still had to be played using a bright orange ball.

The conditions should have taken some getting used to but Rapid came out flying and scored inside 33 seconds. McManus, harried by Jelavic, sent the ball straight to Stefan Hofmann and he played it back to his team-mate. Jelavic spun and planted a shot in off the post.

McGinn, playing wide on the left, tried to spark some life into Celtic, with a run that ended with a pass to Flood. He managed to find space for a shot but Rapid goalkeeper Raimund Hedl saved.

Yet, Rapid’s tails were up and they added a second in eight minutes. Salihi beat the offside trap and squared for Jelavic, who slotted home with ease.

It was a poor start from Celtic but worse was to come in 19 minutes. Jelavic got the ball on the left wing and raced past Glenn Loovens before finding Salihi and he tapped in from six yards to make it 3-0.

Celtic needed something in response and Fortune struck in 24 minutes. Wilson’s cross was knocked on by McGowan and the striker swivelled before lashing a shot high into the net.

Two minutes later, McGinn ghosted in from the left, beat his marker and almost pulled another goal back for Celtic. Hedl saved on that occasion and then raced off his line to collect a Marc Crosas pass as Flood threatened.

Artur Boruc had to be at his best to deny Veli Kavlak as Rapid looked for a fourth but it was McGinn who had the final chance of the first half. His rising drive was somehow tipped wide by Hedl.

The Irishman was switched to the right wing for the start of the second period but was still a menace and almost scored within three minutes of the restart. McManus, up for a corner, slid a brilliant pass into his path and Hedl somehow saved his low shot.

Rapid couldn’t handle McGinn and he was again denied by Hedl in 50 minutes. Crosas split the defence with a sublime pass to send the winger clear but his low shot was superbly blocked.

Boruc did well to deny Jelavic as Rapid mounted their first attack of the half. McGinn then threatened once again from the right flank but Hedl came out on top with a diving save.

Celtic were controlling the game and Fortune grabbed a deserved second in 67 minutes. Flood’s quick free-kick found McGinn and his low cross was tapped home by the striker to make it 3-2.

McGinn left three defenders trailing and fired a deflected shot wide of target as Celtic continued to camp themselves in the Rapid half. Loovens then headed narrowly over the bar.

Irish winger Graham Carey made his Celtic debut as a late replacement for McGinn, who had run himself to a standstill. Chris Killen also replaced Fortune.

Rapid looked to have held on but McGowan had other ideas. Crosas picked up a loose ball and found the striker inside the box. He chested the ball down and then left Hedl with no chance to make it 3-3.

Celtic's game at rugby park postponed

Newsroom Staff
CELTIC'S game against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday, December 30 has been postponed. The decision was taken due to adverse conditions around the ground.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “"Clearly, we are extremely disappointed that the match has been postponed.

“We have been told that the pitch is perfectly playable, but we have also been informed that the match cannot proceed due to the stadium footprint (area surrounding the stadium) not being cleared - Naturally this is very frustrating for the club and its supporters.

“As is always the case, it is the responsibility of home clubs to ensure that their own footprint or locality is safe and obviously in this case, this has not been achieved.”

No date has yet been set for the re-arranged SPL fixture. More details to follow in due course on the official Celtic website.

disappointment as dominant celts draw

Gregor Kyle
DESPITE dominating the game and playing all the football, Celtic had to settle for a share of the points from the opening derby game of the new decade.

For almost the entire 90 minutes Tony Mowbray’s men penned Rangers back and eventually made the breakthrough thanks to a Scott McDonald header on 78 minutes.

But once again, Celtic were undone by poor defending, allowing Rangers to level just minutes later with their only attempt on target in the entire match.

This game proved to be a clash of two different football philosophies, with Celtic trying to take the game to Rangers and the visitors, presented with the chance of opening up a 10-point lead at the top of the table, taking a far more cautious approach.

The start to this match was typically frantic and when the ball broke on the edge of the Celtic penalty box in the second minute, Rangers fired in a succession of speculative efforts which were easily blocked before Glenn Loovens cleared.

But after this early melee, Celtic took control and quickly gathered momentum, with Aiden McGeady playing a lead role as they began to put the visitors under pressure.

During this opening 15-minute period Nacho Novo was also injured in a collision with Georgios Samaras, eventually limping off and being replaced by Maurice Edu.

The job was breaking down this ultra-defensive Rangers side and in the 19th minute it looked like Celtic had succeeded, with Marc-Antoine Fortune beating Allan McGregor to a high ball and heading home.

Just why Steve Conroy disallowed this perfectly legitimate goal remains a mystery and it wasn’t the first poor decision that went against Celtic, with the referee also choosing to produce a yellow card for a shocking challenge by Kyle Lafferty on Andreas Hinkel that should have been a straight red.

In the face of such frustrations and the spoiling tactics generally employed by Rangers, Celtic stuck to the task and continued to try and play football while their opponents failed to create any goalscoring opportunities.

It was all one-way traffic and in the 36th minute Barry Robson hit the bar with a header, before Aiden McGeady got on the end of a Hinkel cross and sent the ball spinning inches wide.

This was immediately followed by a chance for Samaras who went through on goal, thanks to a lucky break of the ball and the determination of Marc Crosas and Fortune, but also fired wide. Then, right on the stroke of half time, the Greek opted for an extra touch of the ball when picked out by a corner and allowed Rangers to clear.

The second half started as the first finished, with Samaras sending a volley wide of the post and McGeady going through twice, missing the target the first time and then stumbling as he lifted his shot over the bar.

However, Rangers initially looked to be more adventurous and won a couple of corners which Celtic dealt with comfortably.

Then in the 54th minute there was another heavy challenge on a Celtic full-back, with Kris Boyd getting a yellow as he went in late on Danny Fox. This was followed by a clumsy tackle by Lee McCulloch on Aiden McGeady, who failed to get any of the ball or a card for his efforts, and then a yellow for Steven Whittaker for a reckless lunge.

By the 70th minute and despite another excellent chance for Samaras, Celtic’s momentum was disrupted and the game continually interrupted by fouls and late tackles.

It was at this stage that Tony Mowbray decided to make a change, bringing on Scott McDonald, who, within minutes of entering the fray had been hit late by McGregor and fired a first-time shot straight at the Rangers’ keeper.

Then, in the 78th minute, Celtic finally got the break they deserved, with the substitute making maximum impact.

With Rangers again penned in deep inside their penalty box, McGeady took possession on the right and cut inside, beating both Whittaker and Sasa Papac, before lifting the ball over the packed defence, finding McDonald, who headed home.

However, the lead lasted less than three minutes, with Celtic allowing McCulloch to steal-in, unmarked at the near post and power a header into the net from a corner.

Celtic immediately went on the attack and, when a Hinkel cross found Samaras at the back post with five minutes to go, McGregor pulled off a wonder save to deny him.

It was a frustrating end to a game that Celtic deserved to win and saw a number of key decisions inexplicably go against them.

very frustrating, but seemed to me that this was going to happen after Mc donald(i think) was in all the papers last week going on about how he wanted to beat his norn iron team mates who play for rangers

Celtic sign dutch defender jos hooiveld

CELTIC Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Jos Hooiveld from AIK Stockholm on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

The 26-year-old Dutch defender has been with the Swedish side for the past year and helped them to win the league and cup.

Hooiveld began his career with Heerenveen, and after three years at the club, during which time he also had a loan spell at Dutch second division side FC Zwolle, he moved to Austrian side Kapfenberger SV.

After a season there, he joined Finnish club Inter Turku, where two impressive seasons earned him a move to AIK Stockholm.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, Jos Hooiveld said: “I’m delighted to sign for a club of Celtic's stature. Celtic has a magnificent history and is a club with great tradition and great supporters.

“Having visited the club and spoken to the manager, I feel this is the right place for me and I am very much looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates and hopefully playing my part in bringing success to the club and our fans.”

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray said: “We are very pleased to welcome Jos to Celtic. He is a player who we believe can make an important contribution to the club and someone we look forward to working with.”

Robson and Flood both joined Celtic from Dundee United, while Killen moved to the club from Hibernian. Midfielder Robson played 57 times for Celtic, scoring seven goals and he played a vital part in the run-in to the 2008 title triumph which made it three-in-a-row for the Hoops.

Flood made nine appearances for Celtic, while Killen started eight games, though he made a total of 40 appearances for the Hoops, scoring three goals.

Everyone at Celtic would like to thank them for their contributions and wish them every success at Middlesbrough.
