CELTIC Football Club is delighted today, Wednesday, May 26 to launch its new home kit for season 2010/11.

The launch of the new kit by Celtic and Nike, the world’s leading football brand, also marks the club's new shirt sponsorship with Scotland's leading brewer Tennent's.

Celtic’s famous green and white Hoops are complemented by a new white collar with black detail and ‘1888’, the year of Celtic’s formation, is ghosted across the background of the shirt.

The new Nike kit has been designed to keep players drier, cooler and more comfortable, allowing them to maintain an optimum body temperature and perform at their best on the pitch.

Improved Nike Dri-FIT fabric, now 15 per cent lighter than previous Nike kit fabrications, helps keep players dry by drawing sweat to the outside of the garment where it evaporates.

Ventilation zones have been placed on each side of the shirt to enhance breathability, and are combined with a fabric that increases air flow by up to seven per cent compared to previous kits.

Air can now pass across a player’s whole torso, keeping him cooler. These ventilation zones consist of up to 200 tiny laser-cut holes which are backed by Nike’s innovative halo application. This treatment prevents ripping without reducing air flow.

The Nike kit shorts also have additional ventilation zones placed below the waistband and near the base of the spine, so this area prone to high sweat levels will now be significantly drier.

And the shirt’s new double-knit structure not only gives it a sleeker appearance but also boasts a new dynamic fit cut to follow the natural contours of the body while still allowing for maximum airflow and movement.

The new kit will be available for supporters on July 14, 2010, but can now be pre-ordered at any Celtic store or by clicking HERE

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “The new kit is one which we hope will be very popular with our supporters.

“We have already enjoyed an excellent relationship with Nike, a quality organisation and the world’s leading football brand. We were also delighted previously to announce a new five-year deal with Nike, beginning in July.

“This new deal is of great benefit to the club and our supporters and is one which will see Celtic and Nike enjoy a decade of association.”

The Chief Executive is also pleased with the club’s new multi-million pound three-year arrangement with Tennent’s as shirt sponsor.

He added: "As well as launching the new kit, we are delighted to enter into a new partnership with Tennent’s, a brand which has become synonymous with football.

“In very challenging times for Scottish football, it is fantastic that Tennent’s has maintained its high level of commitment to the game in Scotland, something they should receive great credit for.

“This sponsorship provides important revenue for Celtic over the next three years, which will contribute to our continued investment in the football squad. We are sure this partnership with Tennent’s will be most beneficial to the club."

Mike Lees, Managing Director of Tennent's said: "We are absolutely delighted to begin a three-year association with Celtic and Rangers (from 1st July) - two clubs that share the same Glasgow heritage as Tennent's.

"We have been involved in Scottish football now for the past 36 years and see this partnership as a great opportunity to continue this support."

Annual mass remembers the great hunger

Newsroom Staff
THIS Sunday, June 13, the annual Mass in memory of those who died as a result of the Great Hunger will take place at Carfin Grotto in Lanarkshire.

The concelebrated Mass offered by Bishop Joseph Devine of Motherwell and numerous other priests will also constitute a national day for those of Irish descent in Scotland in remembering their roots and heritage, and celebrating the positive economic, social, cultural and political contribution their community has made to modern Scotland.

Part of the legacy of the Irish presence in Scotland is, of course, Celtic Football Club. And the club recently remembered the Great Hunger by wearing a commemorative badge sown onto the first-team shirts in the match against Hearts in May as part of Famine Memorial Day.

By the 1860s, Ireland’s population was halved from its 1845 figure of eight million through starvation, disease and emigration, making the Great Irish Hunger one of the most lethal in modern world history.

This was an important event not only in Irish history, but in Scotland's history too. As a result of this holocaust, the west central belt of Scotland experienced an influx of around 100,000 refugees from Ireland.

The annual Mass in memory of those who died as a result of the Great Hunger takes place this Sunday, June 13 at 3pm at Carfin Grotto, Lanarkshire.

Celtic to play Sporting Lisbon in Boston

Newsroom Staff
CELTIC will face Sporting Lisbon next month in Boston’s Fenway Park in a match between two sides famous for wearing the green and white hoops.

The match, on July 21, is the first ever Fenway Football Challenge and is sure to spark great interest among sports fans in Boston, including the massive Celtic support in the area.

Fenway Park is home to baseball giants, Boston Red Sox, and Celtic’s match with Portuguese side, Sporting Lisbon is the first soccer match to be played at the ballpark since 1968 when Pele and his Santos team faced a local Boston team.

“I’m excited to welcome Celtic and Sporting Lisbon to Boston for their exhibition soccer match at Fenway Park,” said Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

“Soccer is a global game and this match will provide another opportunity to showcase Boston as a truly global city, attracting fans from around the world and highlighting the people, culture, and local businesses that make our city so special.

“Both teams have many faithful supporters throughout our city and I look forward to this match-up with great anticipation.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “We are delighted once again to be visiting Boston, a city which has welcomed the Club and its supporters on many occasions.

“Boston is a place which enjoys a great connection with Celtic Football Club and is somewhere which is held very fondly in the hearts of our supporters.

“We would like to thank Mayor Menino, the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Sports Group and of course, the people of the city of Boston for again hosting the Club and our supporters.

“As is always the Celtic way, we hope through this visit to make many more new friends in Boston. We are sure our meeting against Sporting Lisbon will be a great match and we are very much looking forward to a fantastic occasion.

“We know our supporters from across the United States and Canada and even beyond will travel to the match in great numbers and we are sure they will join Sporting supporters in an occasion which demonstrates all that is great about football, in one of the world's finest cities.”

It’s not the first time that Celtic have played at Fenway Park. During a tour of the United States back in 1931, the Hoops lost against the New York Yankees of the American Soccer League.

Paulo Costinha, Sporting Lisbon Football Director, said: “It’s an honour to be invited to such a prestigious match.

“Sporting is always proud to travel abroad to represent this Portuguese centenary institution, particularly against an opponent with a rich history in football, such as Celtic FC in Glasgow.

“We thank the Mayor of Boston, the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Sports Group for this invitation.”

And Sam Kennedy, EVP/COO of the Boston Red Sox and President of Fenway Sports Group, added: “This match is a tremendous opportunity to highlight some of the top talent in the soccer world, and we want to thank Celtic and Sporting Lisbon for bringing the sport here for the first time in over 40 years.

“The Red Sox ownership group, led by John Henry, Tom Werner, and Larry Lucchino, have been committed to promoting all that is good and unique about Fenway Park, and this match presents an exciting opportunity to showcase the ballpark to an international audience.

“As the world celebrates football with the 2010 World Cup, the Fenway Football Challenge will provide New Englanders the opportunity to witness two international clubs - each with a rich heritage and a passionate regional fan base.”

Tickets for the Fenway Football Challenge between Celtic and Sporting Lisbon on at Fenway Park, Boston, on July 21 go on sale on Tuesday, June 22. For more information, CLICK HERE

Lennon: this is a wonderful moment in my life

Mark Henderson
NEIL LENNON had walked out of the Celtic Park tunnel many times before. But this time was different. It was the early hours of the morning and he had just been confirmed as the new manager of Celtic.

Surveying the 60,000 empty seats under the moonlight, it really began to hit home to the Irishman about the significance of the task he was taking on,and the legendary figures whose footsteps he would be following in.

“It’s a wonderful moment for me and a wonderful moment in my life,” said Lennon, speaking after being unveiled as the new manager.

“Things were concluded pretty late on the other night. I have walked out that tunnel many, many times but when I came walking out on my own, I think it was around half past twelve in the morning and I have never seen Celtic Park like it.

“It was a beautiful night, the only light coming in was from the moon. It was a very special moment to know that I would be in charge of the football club and would be walking in the footsteps of the likes of Mr Stein, Martin O’Neill, Billy McNeil, Dave Hay, Wim Jansen, Tommy Burns and Gordon Strachan.

"It was a very special moment for me personally and I am ready and looking forward to the challenge."

Now the Irishman is relishing the opportunity of emulating some of the success of those pervious incumbents of the Celtic hot-seat – something he did on many occasions as a Hoops player.

The first priority will be making big improvements on the pitch from last year and winning the title. One thing is certain - you can be sure Lennon will make the most of his chance.

“I am confident,” he said. “I think it’s a priority to challenge for the title. I think it is every season. As a player I knew how to get it done and I did it once as a coach, albeit for eight or nine games under Gordon
Strachan.

“We know last season wasn’t good enough, but the players showed me that they do have it in them. Over the last eight or nine games they showed a level of consistency that maybe they had not shown previously.

"They proved a lot to themselves in the run-in and we can go forward and hopefully carry that optimism through to the start of the season.

“I know that we have to hit the ground running. But I am looking to bring in a few players with a bit more experience and nous, and a better mentality than we showed last year.”

He added: “When I was a young lad, I dreamed of playing for Celtic. I never envisaged myself actually being the manager. I think when I retired and started the coaching badges, the next logical step for me was to go into coaching.

"So it was an ambition of mine. I didn’t expect it to come so soon, but I have to take this opportunity and maximise it as best I can.”

Celtic to hold talks with World Cup star Cha Du-ri

Celtic will open talks tomorrow with South Korean World Cup star Cha Du-ri.

Chaduri2006.jpg

The Freiburg right-back, 29, is available on a free and revealed yesterday that he is flying in to Glasgow for a medical for the Parkhead club.

He was quoted as saying: “Tomorrow (Tuesday) I fly to Glasgow to undergo a medical check. Then I will take two weeks vacation in South Korea.”

If talks are successful, the former Bayer Leverkusen player will join up at Parkhead with international team Ki Sung-yueng as Hoops manager Neil Lennon begins the refurbishment of his squad ahead of the new season.

Bhoys for Africa

Newsroom Staff
THE new premises of Johannesburg Celtic Supporters’ Club were officially opened at the weekend by Celtic director Brian Wilson who is in South Africa to take in some World Cup games.

Although the club has been in existence since 1987 and has around 70 members, this is the first time they have had a place to call their own.

The spacious premises are adorned with Celtic memorabilia with pride of place going to a hand-written letter from Jimmy Johnstone, accepting an invitation to become the club’s first Honorary President.

Bill McIntosh, as well as being President of the Johannesburg club, is also the driving force behind Bhoys for Africa –an organisation which does fantastic work, distributing donated Celtic strips and other football kit to poor townships, not only in South Africa but in other African countries where Bill travels on business.

DisplayImage.aspx

Earlier in the day, Brian Wilson had joined Bill and his colleagues in the township of Diepsluit, half-an-hour outside Johannesburg to distribute kit that had been donated by Celtic Supporters’ Clubs in San Francisco and Duntocher!

Bhoys for Africa are dependent on whatever is sent to them from Celtic Supporters’ Clubs around the world.

Bill stresses that they do not want financial donations – just kit that can be distributed to “kids who have nothing” and who hugely appreciate this kind of support.

Speaking at the club opening, Brian Wilson said: “Celtic Football Club was founded for charitable purposes in the East End of Glasgow and what I saw in Diepsluit this morning is completely in keeping with the ethos and values of the club. It was a privilege to be part of it”.

In the club opening photograph, Celtic director Brian Wilson does the honours, watched by Bill McIntosh, originally from Castlemilk, and Robert Mafolo, Bhoys for Africa co-ordinator in Diepsluit.
