By: Newsroom Staff on 05 Jul, 2012

CELTIC Football Club is delighted to announce that it is to play Inter Milan in a high-profile glamour match at Celtic Park, kicking-off Celtic´s 125th anniversary celebrations in style.

The match will take place on Saturday, July 28, with a 1:30pm kick-off.
Italian Serie-A giants Inter will bring their star-studded international line up to Celtic Park and the fixture will also re-kindle memories of Celtic´s greatest achievement, when we became the first British club to lift the European Cup, the biggest prize in club football.

There will be a number of other activities around the match for supporters and members of the Lisbon Lions team will be present to join in the celebrations.

Celtic Manager Neil Lennon said: "History is something to respect and to cherish and we are delighted therefore to be celebrating 125 years of Celtic in such a manner.

“The match will be a magnificent event where we welcome some top players to Glasgow and, of course, honour those who have played such an important role in Celtic´s past.

“It is magnificent that Celtic is able to bring such a big name to Scottish football and I am sure this will be an occasion which our supporters, across many generations, will wish to experience.

"From my perspective, as well as being a very poignant fixture, this will also be a real test for my team and one they are looking forward to immensely.

“The next few weeks are very important to us as we prepare for the new season and, of course, European football - the match against Inter will be an important element in our preparation."

Celtic Legend and Ambassador Billy McNeill added: "This will be a tremendous occasion and one which all the Lions are looking forward to immensely.

“Myself and the other members of the Lisbon Lions team are fortunate enough to have a place in Celtic´s history and we are very proud to have played our part in the last 125 years.

“Celtic in our minds will always be one of the world´s greatest clubs in terms of its origins, its proud history of success, its spirit and of course its supporters.

“It will be all these things which we will celebrate on July 28 and what better way to do it, than against one of the other great names in European football".

Delighted meself jigger. We`ll just have to wait and see what league the corrupt SFA put them in. I have a gut feeling its going to be league one.

More than likely will be league one because Regan (most corrupt man ive ever seen) called it a travesty to scottish football and culture if they weren't there. Hopefully this vote next week shows some backbone from the whole SFL

I know it a Celtic forum but here goes. Kinda involves the hoops anyway in a round about way. No old firm's
I read a statement from the SPL this morning, basically saying that there will be social unrest and anarchy will ensue. People are tribal and need to follow a team on Saturday. I'm from Bolton and i am pretty sure Scotland is Like England, as in there are football teams out side the top division. Could not believe what this guy was saying (Regan I think) Complete insult to the lower divisions. Remember Man City a few years ago League 1 (old div 3) still getting 30-40k per game. Packed out every small club and made them a bit of money as well.
Don't know what the take is up there, IMO new clubs should start from scratch and work up. No doubt they'll be back up, thats if they can put a team out lol.

Now Iv'e got over the Bolton relegation i am looking forward to the new season. gong to new grounds.

P.S whats the odds on Celtic winning the league :whistling:

Andy Goram says newco already assured they are going in Div 1 and adds “I don't know why they are delaying for another week in announcing it.“

So if Goram is right- the SFL vote on July 13 is a total sham- a huge con trick being played on the Scottish public. Fans must demand the truth.

@steeeve, Celtic are 1/50 to win the SPL lol

Celtic legend Joe McBride passes away

By: Joe Sullivan on 12 Jul, 2012 08:44
CELTIC legend, Joe McBride, sadly passed away late last night after his short battle with illness following a stroke.

Joe, of course, was a much valued member of the Lisbon Lions’ squad and his truly amazing goals-per-game ratio during Celtic’s greatest ever season was a key component of the team’s unrivalled success in 1966/67.

Despite an injury picked up on Christmas Eve 1966 keeping him out for the rest of the season, the striker had still scored 35 goals in the 26 games he had played up until that point.

That was the sort of striking acumen that had Joe only behind the great Jimmy McGrory in goal-scoring prowess or, to put it in more modern terms, his goal-scoring record on a game-to-game ratio was even better than that of Henrik Larsson.

Joe joined his Bhoyhood heroes from Motherwell on June 5, 1965 following spells with Kilmarnock, Wolves, Luton Town and Partick Thistle.

That injury picked up against Aberdeen on December 24, eventually saw him lose his place in the side and he moved to Hibernian on November 5, 1968 only for his goalscoring touch to return and haunt the Hoops when he played against them.

So much so that the great Jock Stein had to admit to the player himself that he probably let him go a bit early.

His relatively short stint at the club came in the Hoops’ greatest and most silver-laden period and in his 94 games he scored an amazing 86 goals.

Given that he challenged Jimmy McGrory for the title of Celtic’s most precocious striker, it’s no surprise that McGrory himself described Joe McBride as the best goalscorer he had seen at the club – no mean compliment from the best of all and a man who had been watching Celtic score goals for the best part of half-a-century.

Following his stint with Hibernian, Joe also had spells with Dunfermline and Clyde before retiring on April 29, 1972.

Joe won two league championships and two League Cups with Celtic as well as picking up two Scotland caps – in the second of those, against Northern Ireland, he lined up alongside five other Celtic team-mates in the Scotland side.

He will forever be known as Joe McBride of Celtic, though, and was a more than popular member of the squad of former players who still wore the club colours as part of the matchday hospitality team of legends who meet and greet the fans.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “The passing of Joe McBride is tragic news.

"Joe was a very fine man, an absolute gentleman and someone who gave tremendous service to the club over a number of years.

"It was a privilege to know Joe and it was fantastic that someone who gave so much to Celtic was still involved with the club in a number of ways - he will truly be sadly missed by everyone at Celtic.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club are very much with Joe’s family at this very difficult time.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon added: "The loss of Joe is terrible news. It was a pleasure to be in Joe’s company and on a personal level, Joe was someone who was always very supportive to myself.

"I know Joe Jnr well too and on behalf of the whole management and backroom team, and the players, we offer our sincere condolences to Joe’s family, we know this will be a very difficult time for them all.”

He will be sadly missed by all and the thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club and the extended Celtic family are with Joe’s family at this very sad time.

Celtic learn UEFA Champions League opponents

By: Mark Henderson on 20 Jul, 2012 11:13

CELTIC will play the winner of HJK Helsinki v KR Reykjavik in the UEFA Champions League Third Qualifying Round, following this morning´s draw. HJK won the the first leg 7-0, with the return leg to played next Tuesday night.

Having racked up a 7-0 lead from the first-leg, the Finnish side – who currently occupy second place in their national league after 17 games – look likely to be the Hoops' opponents in the competition.

Celtic met Helsinki as recently as 12 years ago in the UEFA CUP First Round, with the Hoops triumphing 3-2 on aggregate on that occasion.

Martin O'Neill's side had won the first leg 2-0 in Paradise courtesy of a brace from Henirk Larsson.

Over in Finland, the hosts wiped out that advantage thanks to a goal in each half from Paulus Roiha, sending the match into extra time. However, Chris Sutton was on target to book the Bhoys' spot in the next round of the tournament where they met Bordeaux.

Again that tie would head into extra-time, with the Hoops losing out on this occasion as a result of Lilian Laslands strike six minutes before the final whistle.

The first leg of Celtic´s third-round tie will be played on either July 31 or August 1. More information to follow.

Celtic’s win over HJK in the third qualifying round of the Champions League put them in Friday’s draw for the play-offs.

Neil Lennon’s side are potentially 180 minutes from playing on the biggest stage in club football and will learn who stands in their way when the draw is made in Nyon.
As SPL winners, the Parkhead club are in the Champions Path in the qualifiers, meaning that they can only draw one of five potential opponents. A trip to Romania, Sweden, Slovenia, Cyprus or Israel is possible and they could be paired with a familiar name.

Celtic’s potential opponents

CFR 1907 Cluj

Unknown a decade ago, Cluj only played their first European game in 2004. In the 2008-09 Champions League they made a splash though, defeating Roma and drawing with Chelsea in the group stages.
Having won their third league title by just a point over Vaslui last season, they entered Champions League qualifying at the third qualifying round. Cluj dealt easily with Slovan Liberec, winning 1-0 at home before taking a 2-1 win in the Czech Republic.
The danger men are Greek striker Pantelis Kapitanos, who has three goals in five games already this season and creative Brazilian Rafael Bastos.

Helsingborgs

Or Henrik Larsson’s former club Helsingborgs, as they would no doubt be called in most Scottish reports.
Because the Swedish league is played in the summer months, the club are in the competition based on their league win in the 2010-11 season. This term they haven’t fared so well and are languishing in sixth position just after the halfway stage,
Following the departure of Conny Karlsson in June, former Norway manager Age Hareide took charge of the side on a short-term basis until the end of the Allsvenkan season.
An experience campaigner, Hariede was in the dugout when Scotland drew with Norway and Chris Iwelumo missed that chance.
Helsingborgs have come through two qualifying rounds to reach this stage, beating The New Saints 3-0 on aggregate before an impressive 6-1 thumping of Slask Wroclaw in the third qualifying round.

NK Maribor

A name to strike fear into the hearts of Rangers fans, Maribor would be aiming to do the double over Glaswegian teams in European competition.
The 3-2 shock win against Ally McCoist’s side last season brought the Slovenians to wider attention but it was just another step in a steady rise for Darko Milanic’s side.
The league was won by a healthy 20 points last season and four games in to the new campaign Maribor are unbeaten and sitting top. Zeljeznicar and Dudelange have been dismissed in two rounds of qualifying so far with 11 goals scored and three conceded.
Macedonian international Agim Ibraimi, who scored against Rangers, is still a key player and one of only a few foreigners in a squad that is primarily Slovenian.

AEL Limassol

After finishing in ninth position in the 2010-11 Cypriot league, 29 points behind the winners, few would have tipped AEL to take the title the following year.
That they conceded only seven goals in 26 games en route to victory points at a side that is resolute in defence but take their chances in front of goal.
A cosmopolitan side assembled by Pambos “Pamourinho” Christodolou is aiming to spring a surprise in Europe but after dismantling Linfield in their Second qualifying round match, Linfield manager David Jeffrey was clear in his assessment of their ability.
"This was the toughest contest I have ever taken a team into,” he said. “They are an exceptional side."
Even so, when pitted against Partizan in the next round, AEL were the underdogs. Home and away 1-0 wins put them in the play-offs and they look to be a tricky proposition.

Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona

Founded in 2000 and beginning in the fourth tier of the Israeli leagues, Ironi Kiryat Shmona’s rise has been rapid.
Only promoted to the top division in 2007, the Israelis won their domestic championship by 14 points over Hapoel Tel Aviv last season.
That title handed the Euro newcomers a place in the Champions League qualifiers and they got off to a great start with a 4-0 win against Neftchi Baku, completing the job with a 2-2 draw in Azerbaijan.
The man who would have to be watched closely by Charlie Mulgrew and company is forward Shimon Abuhatzira, who helped himself to 13 goals en route to the league trophy last season.

CELTIC Team For Tonight...

Subs: Zaluska, Wilson, Lustig, Chalmers, McCourt, Forrest, Watt

LETS F***IN DO THIS CELTIC...

Demolition Derby anniversary

By: Newsroom Staff on 27 Aug, 2012

IT’S hard to believe that 12 years have passed since the Demolition Derby, but today, August 27 is, indeed, the 12th Anniversary of that memorable day at Paradise when Celtic beat Rangers 6-2 in what was Martin O’Neill’s first derby game as manager.

And the game was effectively won inside the first 12 minutes. Goals from Chris Sutton, Stiliyan Petrov and Paul Lambert put the Hoops 3-0 ahead and sent the Celtic fans into ecstasy.

In the second-half, Henrik Larsson netted twice – including a sublime chip that remains one of the best he scored for Celtic – while Chris Sutton complete the scoring in the last minute to make it 6-2.

SETTING THE SCENE
Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side began the season in impressive form, recording a 2-1 victory at Tannadice on the opening day of the season, the goals coming from a new partnership that would quickly become one of the most potent in football. Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton provided the goals throughout what would become a momentous season for the club, and they were both on the scoresheet that day. Further league wins over Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Hearts, as well as a UEFA Cup win over Jeunesse Esch of Luxembourg, meant confidence was high going into a match against the defending champions, who had also started the season in good form.

DERBY DAZE
The teams met on August 27, 2000 at a packed Paradise, and it took all of 11 minutes for Celtic to let everyone know that the balance of power in the city was shifting inexorably east. By then, Chris Sutton, Stiliyan Petrov and Paul Lambert had put the Hoops 3-0 up, and Celtic Park was in a state of delirium as the home fans celebrated the incredible start to the game. Claudio Reyna pulled a goal back on 40 minutes, but Henrik Larsson restored Celtic’s three-goal lead five minutes after the break, and what a goal it was as the Super Swede combined with Sutton before producing an audacious piece of skill, lobbing Stefan Klos in the Rangers goal. Billy Dodds netted a penalty for the visitors, but Larsson headed home his second of the afternoon before Chris Sutton made it 6-2 with a goal in the final minute of the match. It truly was a demolition derby.

STAR MAN
It should really be a case of star men because everyone who wore the green and white Hoops that day was a hero. Certainly, the headlines were grabbed by Sutton and Larsson – the Englishman for his two derby debut goals which book-ended all the other scoring, and the Swede for his two strikes, in particular his magnificent lob over Klos. Larsson was returning for a full season after his previous campaign was curtailed following a leg break. And his impact was phenomenal as he scored 53 in all competitions, including 35 in the league. It was enough to give him the Golden Boot Award as Europe’s top goalscorer.

MAKE MINE A TREBLE…
Martin O’Neill had stood on the steps outside the front of Celtic Park in June 2000 after he was announced as the new manager and promised that he would do everything he could to bring success to the football club. Just under a year later, he had proved as good as his word, having delivered the domestic treble back to Paradise. The League Cup was the first trophy to arrive, and a Henrik Larsson hat-trick over Kilmarnock in the final secured the silverware. That was followed by the league title, and a Tommy Johnson goal against St Mirren in April 2001 was enough to give Celtic the victory and the vital three points which confirmed them as champions. And in the final game of the season, a double from Larsson and a Jackie McNamara strike gave Celtic a 3-0 victory in the sun at Hampden over Hibernian to lift the Scottish Cup and secure the club’s first treble since 1969.

CELTIC were today grouped with Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow in Group G when the teams for the UEFA Champions League group stages were drawn in Monaco.
