Celtic keen on Everton striker James Vaughan

Celtic are in talks with Everton about a possible loan deal for James Vaughan.

The Scottish Premier League leaders could pay a rental fee to bring the 22-year-old striker to Glasgow for the rest of the season.

Vaughan made his first Everton appearance of the season as a 74th-minute substitute during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

He spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Crystal Palace, scoring five goals in his time at Selhurst Park.

Everton's forwards have struggled for goals this season, with midfielder Tim Cahill their top marksman.

Nigerian international Yakubu has been allowed to join Leicester on loan, leaving manager David Moyes to choose from Louis Saha, Jermaine Beckford, Victor Anichebe, Magaye Gueye and Vaughan in the central striking roles.

Vaughan, who has also had loan spells at Leicester and Derby, made his Toffees debut in April 2005, scoring in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Cardiff and Hull were linked with a move with the player at the end of last year.

Meanwhile, the agent for French striker Garra Dembele has told BBC Scotland that Celtic have tabled an offer for the 24-year-old.

Dembele has scored 27 goals for Bulgarian side Levski Sofia this season.

"I can confirm Celtic made an offer for Garra and he is very interested," said Christian Emille.

"There has also been interest from top clubs in England too. At the moment Levski are weighing up all options but the player himself would prefer a move to a club in the UK."

Celtic 4 - 0 Hearts

Forrest scored the opening goal before being forced off through injury

Anthony Stokes scored twice as Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic halted the Hearts title bandwagon in its tracks with a comfortable victory.

James Forrest's superb 16-yard drive put the home side in control after just seven minutes of an impressive display.

Stokes curled in a delightful free-kick eight minutes after the break.

The Irishman broke clear to score after 71 minutes and Paddy McCourt added a close-range finish to firmly end third-top Hearts' 11-match unbeaten run.

Celtic themselves have now stretched their own unbeaten run to 11 games and moved 10 points clear of the Edinburgh side.

Hearts had arrived on a high after Saturday's 1-0 win over reigning champions Rangers but now find themselves again five points adrift of the second-top side after failing to live up to their pre-match billing.

The talk before the game was how Celtic's defence would cope with just one fit centre-half, Thomas Rogne, available to face in-form visitors.

However, he and Charlie Mulgrew, normally a left-back, were hardly troubled throughout a match in which Celtic immediately established control, troubling the visitors with their pace and precision.

And Forrest, who returned to the side following suspension along with Joe Ledley, gave them the lead after a clever flick by striker Gary Hooper was picked up by Scott Brown.
The Celtic captain drove forward before releasing the winger on the left-hand side of the box.

Forest appeared to take Hearts goalkeeper Marian Kello by surprise when he lashed in an unstoppable shot from 16 yards.

The winger's joy turned to despair when he was forced off after 24 minutes with what looked like a hamstring injury, being replaced with Paddy McCourt, who had originally been dropped to the bench along with Niall McGinn.

Hearts manager Jim Jefferies had started with the more combative Ian Black instead of Ruben Palazuelos, but the visitors were second best in midfield.

When they were at last seen as an attacking force, Stephen Elliott's cross-cum-shot flew dangerously across the face of goal, with Ryan Stevenson just failing to provide a scoring touch.
Good control from Stokes inside the Hearts penalty box set up Ledley to fire wide after a period of intense Celtic pressure.

By now, it was becoming an increasingly stormy affair, with Hearts' Rudi Skacel particularly testing referee Euan Norris's patience despite having already been booked.

The winger also squandered Hearts' best chance of the half on the break when he shot straight at goalkeeper Fraser Forster, while Ledley fired just wide at the other end.

Skacel was replaced with Palazuelos at half-time, manager Jefferies deciding it was better to take the Czech off before he was sent off.

Hearts came out for the second half hoping to replicate Saturday's performance, when they defeated Rangers despite the reigning champions having created a series of chances in the opening 45 minutes.

However, they immediately went close to going further behind when Hooper broke clear and goalkeeper Kello did well to block clear the striker's drive.

Celtic's second was not long in coming, with Stokes curling a free-kick past the goalkeeper from 25 yards.

With the match becoming increasingly heated, Hearts' Black and Marius Zaliukas, plus Celtic's Brown and Stokes, took the number of bookings to seven following a midfield melee.

Hearts were unable to turn that passion into creative football and they should have gone further behind when Hooper fired over from close range.

Stokes grabbed his second when Zaliukas failed to gather a Ledley through ball and, when Hooper stumbled, his strike partner was on hand to score.

McCourt completed the scoring after 80 minutes when Brown set up Stokes and the winger added the finish.

Yeah was a great result for the bhoys, firmly put to rest all the Hearts hype, long may it continue..Hail Hail

Video tribute to Reamonn Gormley

A SPECIAL video tribute to Reamonn Gormley was shown on the big screen at Celtic Park before today’s game.

SNA0409A1-682_1244084a.jpg

Nineteen-year-old Reamonn from Blantyre was a popular and hard-working university student, who had spent the evening of Tuesday, February 1 watching Celtic’s match against Aberdeen in a local pub. Tragically, he was attacked on his way home and died later in hospital.

His funeral was held yesterday (Saturday), and Celtic manager Neil Lennon joined over 800 mourners for the Funeral Requiem Mass at St Joseph's Church, Blantyre.

Reamonn was also a talented footballer who had spent two years with the Celtic Youth Academy, from Under-13 to Under-15 level, and his death has shocked everyone who knew and worked with him.

During his gap year between school and university, Reamonn taught English to children in Thailand at the Good Child Foundation.

The charity has challenged traditional thoughts on inclusive education and is the only school offering placements to children of all ages and abilities, including pupils with Down’s Syndrome, at its school in the Chanthaburi province of Thailand.

The video tribute shown at Celtic Park on Sunday included some footage of Reamonn, and was followed by the children of the Good Child Foundation singing a special version of Just Can’t Get Enough, which included a moving tribute to Reamonn, who was very popular with the kids during the time he worked there.

A Celtic spokesperson said: "The senseless killing of Reamonn was a real human tragedy. Reamonn was an extremely fine young man who had his whole life in front of him.

“He was a huge Celtic supporter and someone who lived life to the full. It is fitting that we honour and respect Reamonn in this way at Celtic Park, the place he held so dearly.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Reamonn's family during this very difficult time.

“The Gormley family would like to take this opportunity to thank the many thousands of Celtic and Rangers supporters for the condolences and messages of sympathy they have received.”

And Celtic supporters have already raised over £16,000 in memory of Reamonn, which will be donated, through Celtic Charity Fund, to the Good Children Foundation.

Celtic fans up there with the best

By: Newsroom Staff on 11 Mar, 2011
A NEW poll has confirmed what’s been known for a long time – that Celtic supporters are amongst the best in football.

The poll saw Celtic take their place alongside some of the top English Premiership clubs as having the best away supporters in Britain.

This is something that has long been recognised in football, with both UEFA and FIFA having previously awarded their respective Fair Play Awards to the Celtic support for their conduct and behaviour in following the team throughout Europe.

A Celtic spokesperson said: “Our fans play an important part in any success we enjoy, home or away, and the manager and players have often referred to them as our 12th man.

“And with an important away Scottish Cup tie against Inverness Caley Thistle this weekend, we know that our supporters will give their backing to the team in the positive manner they always do, promoting the good name of Celtic.”

Unique Celtic shirts will help Japan Appeal

By: Paul Cuddihy on 25 Mar, 2011 13:08

CELTIC players will wear special Hoops shirts with their names printed in Japanese lettering for the SPL game against Hibernian at Celtic Park on Wednesday, April 6. The move is a gesture of support for the people of Japan and a tribute to all those who sadly lost their lives during the recent earthquake and tsunami which struck the country.

These unique Celtic tops will be signed by each player and then auctioned, with the money raised being donated to help Oxfam’s Japan Appeal. Oxfam are one of Celtic’s charity partners and this will continue the great work being done by both organisations.

The move has been welcomed by former Celt Shunsuke Nakamura, who will sign a special No.25 ‘NAKAMURA’ Celtic top which will have his name in Japanese on the back. And this shirt will also be auctioned.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, Nakamura said: “I’m delighted to back this great initiative. As everyone will know, the earthquake and tsunami have caused incredible damage in my country.

“It is a very difficult time in Japan and we are all working here to try and make things better for the many hundreds of thousands of people affected.

“The warmth, generosity and charitable spirit of Celtic supporters is something which I will forever remember from my time at the club.

“I was always very aware of everything which the club did in this area to help people in need and I know this was always such an important element in the club's history and formation.”

And the former Celt added: “I wish all Celtic supporters the very best and I thank you very much for any support you can provide to the people of Japan.”

A Celtic spokesperson said: “The club has made lasting links with Japan through the time Shunsuke Nakamura and Koki Mizuno spent at the club.

“Those friendships remain as strong as ever, with the club having also gained many new supporters in Japan, in addition to the many Celtic fans who were already based there.

“The consequences of the devastating earthquake and tsumani moved everyone who saw the reports from Japan, and we hope this initiative, in some small way, will help with the process of healing in the country.

“And we also know that people in Japan are continuing to suffer the in the aftermath of this tragedy.

“Our supporters are always generous in their charitable efforts, something that goes to the very heart of who we are as a club and as a support, and we know that the Celtic fans will respond with the same generous spirit this time around.

“As ever our thoughts and prayers remain with the people of Japan and all of those affected by this terrible tragedy.”

Details of how you can bid for these unique Celtic shirts will be announced after Celtic’s SPL game against Hibernian on Wednesday, April 6.
