AN impressive performance saw Celtic triumph over a strong Hibernian side, with the Hoops winning all three points with a 2-1 victory. Goals from Chloe Craig and a Sue Lappin penalty were enough to give Celtic the vital win.

The Hoops started the match brightly and soon recorded their first chance when new signing Ruesha Littlejohn managed to get a strike on target, but Hibernian keeper Shannon Lynn saved comfortably.

Soon after, Suzanne Grant managed to get herself in the way of the keeper’s clearance and watched the ball dip just over the bar. However, the opening goal soon arrived when McWhinnie brought down Susan Fairlie on the edge of the box and defender Chloe Craig fired home the resulting free kick with power and accuracy.

The visitors were almost two ahead when Susan Fairlie’s pace beat the Hibs defence and left her with the keeper to beat, but her shot went narrowly wide.

Against the run of play, Hibs were able to get themselves back into the game when a mistimed defensive clearance allowed striker Kennedy an easy finish to equalise.

Craig was fired an another free-kick from a similar range to the one which provided the goal, but this time the keeper was able to make a save at the near post. Then, after a clever lay-off from Littlejohn, Sue Lappin curled a shot just wide of the top corner.

Just before half time, Fairlie was once again brought down when through on goal, this time by the out-rushing Hibs keeper who was shown a red card for her challenge. Lappin stepped up to covert the resulting penalty and give the Hoops a 2-1 lead.

After a good start to the second half by Celtic, Hibs came more into the game without really troubling Gemma Fay in the Celtic goal. Midway through the half, replacement Hibs keeper Murray denied Nicky Grant her first competitive goal for the Hoops, while Celtic also squandered a number of chances to extend their lead.

Speaking after the game, manager Robert Docherty said: “It was good to get back to winning ways. We controlled the game from start to finish, and should have scored a few more, but were a little careless at times.

“However, overall, we’re content with the performance, while recognising that we can do a lot better. Chloe Craig’s excellent free-kick was not unexpected since she had been striking the ball really well in training.

“We now look forward to entertaining Aberdeen next weekend in the second round of the Unite Scottish Cup.”

THE SPL has today confirmed that the date for the second Celtic v Rangers fixture of 2011/12 will take place on Wednesday, December 28, 2011.

The match will take place at Celtic Park. Kick-off time is still to be confirmed.
A statement from the SPL said: “The SPL can confirm that the second Glasgow derby fixture will take place on 28 December this year. Following the setting up of the Scottish Government's Joint Action Group, there was a real pressure to re-schedule Glasgow derbies away from weekends and bank holidays.

“We felt it was important for us to respond positively to the JAG process. Following consultation with the Police, Government and other members of the JAG, we have therefore agreed to schedule the second Old Firm match to a date that reduces the challenges associated with such games being played on bank holidays.”

The full Clydesdale Bank SPL fixtures for 2011/12 will be published on Friday, June 17 at 9am.

Celtic Football Club statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 17 Jun, 2011

CELTIC Football Club has today issued a statement in response to the introduction of legislation by the Scottish Government on the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Bill.

Celtic Football Club Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, commented: “Celtic Football Club welcomes the introduction of this legislation. The issues it seeks to address are problems for society as a whole and not just football.

"The type of behaviour intended to be covered by this legislation has no place anywhere in Scottish society."

Lennon signs new Celtic contract

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has signed a new 12-month rolling contract, the Glasgow club have confirmed.

Lennon told the club's official website: 'I am absolutely delighted to agree this new contract with the club. I have had 10 great years connected to Celtic and I hope to enjoy many more.

'Clearly this is down to me and I will be doing everything I possibly can to ensure we bring our fans more success.'

The Northern Irishman, who succeeded Tony Mowbray as manager on an interim basis in March 2010, has been rewarded for improving the Parkhead side in his first full season in charge.

Celtic finished second to Rangers in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League last season but beat Motherwell in the final of the Scottish Cup.

Lennon's side also lost to the Ibrox men in the final of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

The former Celtic skipper continued: 'I have been speaking to Peter (Lawwell, chief executive) over the past few weeks and we are both delighted to move forward together.

'We have sat down, looked at last season and now we look ahead.

'I know that Peter and the board's vision for the club is the same as mine. We are absolutely together on this, we want to bring success to the club and reward the commitment which our supporters continue to make.

'We want to provide our fans with entertaining, attacking and professional football but ultimately we aim to deliver silverware.

'Work begins now on striving to bring domestic trophies to Celtic Park and on having some success in Europe.

'We have already begun looking at the squad for next season. Whoever comes into the squad I know they will be joining some very talented players here who share my appetite for success.'

Lennon thanked the Celtic fans for their support last season.

He said: 'The players have connected with our fans, they know what Celtic means to so many people and I know they will be looking to deliver success for them this coming season.

'Indeed, I would like to record my thanks to our supporters. The backing they gave to me and the team last season was absolutely tremendous.

'Clearly there was a lot involved in last season and their contribution was immense.

'I said when I was appointed manager that we wanted to re-ignite Celtic Park and make it the place it should be - one of Europe's finest, most atmospheric football arenas.

'There is no question this happened. There were numerous occasions last year when the fans' unique backing played such a crucial role and I know that we can build on this for next season.'

REPRESENTATIVES of Celtic Football Club today gave evidence to the Justice Committee at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh in relation to proposed legislation covering Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications.

Celtic have expressed reservations about the timetable of the proposed legislation.

A spokesperson for Celtic said: "As a Club open to all since its formation in 1888, Celtic Football Club has always stood against sectarian and racist behaviour. We have made it clear that we would be prepared to support further legislation that is effective, proportionate, clear, competent and practical.

"We are not yet in a position to make those judgements on the present proposed legislation. We have been given less than three days' notice of today’s Justice Committee meeting and less than four working days' notice of the outline of the legislation itself.

"We have not, therefore, been given anything like sufficient opportunity to scrutinise the legal or practical effects of the proposed legislation or the questions and issues arising.

"We would be happy to return to the Committee when we have had a reasonable opportunity to examine the legal and practical issues arising out of the proposed Bill.

"In the meantime we would urge that adequate time be provided for deliberation of this Bill and its effects.

"Rushed legislation is rarely competent legislation. We believe it is better to have it right rather than rushed, and it is clear that this view is shared widely by many others."

Counting the days down pokeraldo ;) Hopefully I`ll get to see the games in Australia on the telly.

Heading to The Aviva stadium on July 30th to watch the bhoys play Inter. Should be a cracking game :)

We should have one or two new faces in the squad by then.

Hail Hail

AICSC Annual Charity Dinner in Dublin

By: Newsroom Staff on 27 Jun, 2011

IT’S hard to believe that 10 years have passed since Celtic’s legendary Treble-winning season of 2000/01 and it seems like only yesterday since Martin O’Neill restored the Hoops to pre-eminence assisted, of course, by the great Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Paul Lambert and current manager Neil Lennon.

In July 2001, over 1,000 Irish Celtic supporters rocked the Citywest Hotel in Dublin with a night of celebration.

And once more the Citywest will be the venue for a very special night as the Celtic family in Ireland and further afield gathers for the 13th Annual Charity Dinner of the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters’ Clubs this coming Saturday evening, July 2 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Treble and, indeed, the present team’s successes this season.

Now an established and not-to-be-missed fixture on the social calendar of Celtic fans in Ireland and beyond, previous years’ events have been memorable and colourful occasions with a superb atmosphere.

They provide the passionate Irish support with a chance to welcome its beloved club back to the land where the glorious Celtic story began and to thank the players for their efforts this season.

Plans are well in hand for a spectacular night with some very special guests (including Tommy Johnson, who grabbed the goal that eventually won the SPL in 2001) and AICSC chairman, Tom Maher, commented: “We are very much looking forward to another great night of Celtic craic and celebrations in the Citywest.

“In particular, it will be great to look back on the fantastic Treble year and to celebrate this season’s success to and we look forward to a memorable gathering of fans from the four corners of Ireland and beyond to celebrate Celtic and its Irish connection.”

Following in the finest Celtic tradition of support for charity, funds raised on the evening will be donated to two very worthy causes, namely the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and the Waterford Autism Social and Sports Action (WASSA).

Tickets for this event cost €67 for AICSC members or €77 for non-members and can be purchased by forwarding a cheque/draft/postal order made payable to the A.I.C.S.C. to Charity Dinner, PO Box 32, Belfast BT1 1AA.
For further information on tickets, please contact AICSC secretary Michael Kelly at

Celtic hero Willie Fernie passes away

By: Joe Sullivan on 01 Jul, 2011

CELTIC legend Willie Fernie had sadly passed away at the age of 82 after fighting Alzheimer's disease for more than a decade.

Willie scored 74 goals in 317 appearances for the Hoops after signing from Leslie Hearts in his native Fife in 1948 and played with the Hoops for 10 years before moving on to Middlesbrough in 1958…

But the wishes of the Celtic support were heeded by the board and the striker returned in 1960.

His tenacity in front of goal was crucial in lifting the Coronation Cup, winning the league and Scottish Cup Double of season 1953/54 and the capture of two successive League Cups which included, of course, Willie netting the all-important final goal in the last minute of 1957’s historic 7-1 victory over Rangers.

He also played a key role in the development of the younger players at that time – the youngsters who would go on to become the Lisbon Lions.

Billy McNeill said: “This is very sad news but I know that Willie had been ill for quite some time.

“He really was a terrific player who we all looked up to when we were young footballers and a lot of the ideas he put into training helped us immensely.

“He was a very fit man and put everything into training and when he eventually went into coaching, that helped us further as he was quite a hard trainer.

“His training regime instilled in us all a will to do our best on the training ground as well as on the pitch on a matchday.”

Billy added: “In the early 1950s we were all fans of Willie Fernie, so to eventually get to play in the same team as him as a youngster and then go on to be coached by him was terrific.

“His play in taking on men and making space for the strikers in the middle was fantastic and he was a true hero of the supporters in the 1950s.”

Funeral details will be announced in due course and the thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Park are with the family of Willie Fernie at this sad time.

May he Rest In Peace.
