Neil Lennon wins February Manager of the Month Award

By: Newsroom Staff on 02 Mar, 2012 11:43

NEIL Lennon has won the Clydesdale Bank SPL Manager of the Month Award for February is recognition of his team´s 100 per cent record throughout the month.

The Celtic boss has steered his side to a 20-point lead at the top of the table, with five SPL wins, scoring 13 goals and not conceding any. The Hoops´ other February fixture was a 2-0 Scottish Cup win away to Inverness Caley Thistle.

Speaking exclusively to Celtic TV´s Huddle Online show tonight, assistant manager Johan Mjallby explained that the manager was a worthy recipient of the award.

"Without a shadow of a doubt," he said, "especially being on this good run that we’ve got just now. It’s great for all of us, and it proves that we’re doing things in the right way.

"We always knew that we had the players, we never panicked, which is probably the main reason we’re sitting here top of the league and still in the two cups, and with everything to play for.

"It was very important that we didn’t change much, despite the poor run of results we had earlier in the season, and we stuck to the things we believed was the right path to success, and it was a case of getting the players to work a wee bit harder for each other.

Johan Mjallby also talks about the difference between playing and management, he reflects on the importance of the next few games for Celtic, and he reveals a little about the management team´s pre-match preparations, including some hotly-contested card competitions.

Celtic Football Club condolences

By: Newsroom Staff on 04 Mar, 2012

EVERYONE at Celtic Football Club is shocked and saddened at the news of the death of Paul McBride QC, who died suddenly at the weekend while on a visit to Pakistan.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell issued this statement on behalf of the club.

"This is tragic news. Paul was a very good friend of Celtic and someone who cared passionately about the club. His passing is clearly a great loss and he will be sadly missed.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Paul´s family at this very difficult time."

Boycott call as Celtic Fans money used to re-establish Rangers

The Gang of 10 SPL club who will meet next week will decide whether or not we have a morally sound and ethically administered league. The meeting wasn’t announced three hours before overtures were being made on terms a Rangers Newco would be prepared to agree to in order to win their backing.

Effectively, the other 10 will asked to hold their noses, put all moral judgement aside and tell Rangers Newco the terms they need to agree to in order to get back into the SPL, retain their history and limit consequences of the alleged improper registration of players. Some of those hoping to front a Rangers Newco are prepared to do whatever is necessary to get back on a level playing field with those who have spent the last 20 years playing honest football and paying their taxes.

The question to be considered is not just what is ethically right in sport; it’s more personal than that. This is about what is going to happen to your money, the football club that defines who you are, and your relationship with the game for the rest of your life.

The schemers and cheats are not beaten and they are not going to give up. There is no honour, no ‘dignity’, no moral compass that understands there are consequences for decades of rampant abuse. All there is, is a sense of entitlement that I struggle to comprehend.

That sense of entitlement is about to promise bucket loads of your cash to someone else in order to restore the old certainties. This time, they are not even going to use the tax man’s money, they are going to use YOUR money. The money you put into the game will be distributed and used to flush the smaller clubs, who will in turn restore Rangers to their position of ascendency.

This is not sport, it’s a disgusting abuse of Celtic fans. You are not even being asked, you are being expected to open your wallets and pay whatever price it takes to put Rangers back on top.

I have never called for a boycott of a newspaper, never mind a football game, but this is not football anymore. We cannot be party to this. It is not a passing-issue either. Rules are being made with consequences that could last 100 years.

You have suffered from decades of malpractice and have earned the right to go to Ibrox in two weeks to enjoy the reflection of honest endeavour. After this, our next away game will be at Kilmarnock.

If the Gang of 10 attempt an insurrection using your money, join me in a picket outside Celtic Park when these tickets are available for sale, and outside the away gates at Rugby Park on game day, to explain to Celtic fans the consequences of supporting the clubs who would use your money to establish a new Rangers.

Unite and bring the full power of Celtic against those who would rather do a deal with the devil than establish an honest, even, playing field.

If the Gang of 10 give Rangers Newco their way, using your money, we cannot go back to an away game, not this season, not ever. We must demand this discipline from each other and insist the club refuse all away tickets.

Having paid our taxes, registered footballers in an honest manner and brought international acclaim to Scottish football, the Celtic Movement is being corrupted by the lowest common denominator.

Our magnificent sporting institution is being destroyed. For the love of all that is decent and meritocratic in the game, we need help from England, Europe or wherever to move out of Scottish football.

I am just about finished with the entire, corrupt, shambles that masquerades as a sport.

Jimmy Johnstone - the Greatest Ever Celt

By: Paul Cuddihy on 13 Mar, 2012

IT was six years ago today, on March 13, 2006, that the player voted the Greatest Ever Celt by supporters passed away after a long and courageous battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

James Connolly Johnstone, known to his friends as Jimmy and to the wider footballing world as Jinky, was born in Viewpark on September 30, 1944, and he remained immensely proud of where he came from throughout his whole life.

He signed for Celtic in November 1961 and made his debut for his beloved Hoops on March 27, 1963. It was a less than auspicious start to what would become a glorious career – Celtic lost 6-0 against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park – but it did not deter or dishearten the diminutive winger.

Like many of his contemporaries, it was the arrival of Jock Stein at Celtic Park in 1965 which galvanised his career, and Jinky would go on to play a pivotal role in the unprecedented success Celtic enjoyed at home and in Europe over the next few years.

The pinnacle of that was, of course, the European Cup triumph on May 25, 1967 when Celtic beat Inter Milan 2-1.

Jinky, however, wasn’t content with just making his mark on that prestigious competition, and on Wednesday, June 7, 1967, in the Bernabeu Stadium, he and his team-mates provided the opposition for the great Alfredo Di Stefano’s testimonial.

The legendary Read Madrid player may have been the focus of the night, but it was Jinky who grabbed all the headlines with a breathtaking display that had the Madrid fans shouting ‘Ole!’ at his every touch.

Jinky stayed at Celtic until 1975, and made a total of 515 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 130 goals.

He remained an immensely popular figure amongst the Celtic support who, in 2003, voted him the Greatest Ever Celt.

By that time, however, he was suffering from Motor Neurone Disease. He faced that battle against the toughest of opponents with incredible bravery and courage, always strengthened by the support of his family and the convictions of his faith.

Sadly, Jimmy Johnstone passed away on March 13, 2006, and the Celtic support, as well as the wider footballing world, mourned his passing.

A statue of Jinky stands outside the front of Celtic Park, alongside those of Brother Walfrid and Jock Stein, as a permanent memorial and a reminder to future generations of a wonderful player.

And on this day, the Celtic family will say a prayer for the loss while also remembering the unique talents of a player who was always proud to wear his beloved green and white Hoops – Jimmy ‘Jinky’ Johnstone, the Greatest Ever Celt.
