Rapid Vienna reverse kit decision

Rapid Vienna have reversed their decision to wear an all-red kit in Thursday night's Europa League meeting with Celtic as mark of "respect".
The Austrian club had planned to resurrect the strip they wore in the infamous 1984 European Cup Winners' Cup clash between the sides during the Group C game at Parkhead.

Rapid denied the move was designed to provoke their opponents and have accused former Celtic star Frank McGarvey - who played in the tie 25 years ago - of stirring up hatred between the clubs.

McGarvey is still haunted by the nature of the Hoops' defeat to the Austrians, which saw the visitors' play-acting prompt UEFA to order a replay of a tie Celtic had won.

Wearing an all-red strip, Rapid then beat Celtic 1-0 at Old Trafford in another bad-tempered game that witnessed serious crowd trouble.

Rapid spokesman Sharif Shoukry said in the Scottish Sun: "We don't want to provide any more fuel to the fire or escalate the whole situation.

"We have been surprised by Mr McGarvey's comments. He talked about us wearing a red strip to stir up a hornet's nest.

"That's not true. The plan now is to show respect and not wear the red strips we wore at Old Trafford. We will wear red tops, blue shorts and blue socks."

He added: "We can't understand Mr McGarvey's position, or why he is making these comments.

"He is making things worse. Something must be done. Someone has to step in, otherwise there is a safety fear for our people when they come to Glasgow."

Come on the Bhoys!

Mowbray looking forward to Old Firm Clash

Manager looking forward to derby clash.

TONY MOWBRAY played and scored in Glasgow derbies during his Celtic career. On Sunday, he gets a first chance to manage the Hoops in one of world football’s great contests.

The media room at Lennoxtown was much busier than usual on Friday afternoon. Newspapers sent reporters en masse, while camera crews from down south filmed preview packages at Celtic’s picturesque training base.

For the Celtic manager, it didn’t come as a shock. He has enough knowledge of Celtic and Rangers to know the eyes of the world will be on Ibrox on Sunday, but he won’t let the media glare affect him. His only focus is on winning three points.

“It’ll be a competitive game of football and we hope it will be a good game as well,” said the manager. “Rangers are a good football team, but we have good players and will go there in confident mood.

“I played in a few derbies and now I’m getting the chance to manage in one. We’re in a good position in that we know we have a four-point advantage at the moment. That gives us some breathing space, but we’ll be as positive as we can.

“We’ll take the positives out of the game against Rapid and we go to Ibrox trying to get a good result. If we get the win, then we are seven points ahead at the top.

“In the SPL, we haven’t lost a game yet. We’ve won five and drawn one, so we’re going okay. No football team can play to their maximum every week. We said that after the St Mirren and we strive to be better than that this weekend.

“It will be intense on Sunday. I know that. It was intense when I played in the 1990s and that hasn’t changed. It’s a massive game between two huge clubs from the same city. We both want to win the league every year and it will be very competitive.”

The Celtic manager has a number of selection dilemmas to contend with over the weekend. Glenn Loovens, on the bench against Rapid, comes into consideration, while Barry Robson is also pushing for a start. Zheng Zhi has impressed in training, but the derby may come too soon for him.

On the injury front, the manager will check on the fitness of Andreas Hinkel and Paddy McCourt on Saturday before finalising his plans. Aiden McGeady will definitely be available.

“Andy and Paddy did a little bit with the physio on Friday and we’ll wait to see how they are on Saturday,” said the manager. “If they can train, then they will be in contention for the game.”

The fitness of Scott Brown remains a topic of debate and Mowbray revealed the Celtic midfielder will see a specialist on Tuesday as he continues to nurse a slight ankle injury.

He said: “Scott’s in the Scotland squad but he’s going to see a specialist on Tuesday, so we’ll see how he is. We will do what’s best for the player after he sees the specialist. I’m not an ankle expert, but we’ll look after Scott and I’ll speak to the SFA about the game in Japan.”

OLD FIRM REF ADMITS ERROR

Referee Craig Thomson has admitted he made a mistake in not giving a 12th-minute penalty to Celtic in Sunday's Old Firm derby against Rangers.

Shaun Maloney was pulled down by David Weir with his side one goal behind in a game they went on to lose 2-1.

Scottish FA referee chief Hugh Dallas was pleased with Thomson's overall display in the Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

But Dallas said: "He is disappointed at his error of judgement when he decided against awarding a penalty."

Thomson went on to book winger Maloney for simulation following a further, similar challenge by Weir that led to strong claims for a penalty.

The referee also booked Celtic's Mark Wilson, accusing the full-back of a dive following a challenge in the penalty area by Sasa Papac.

"I think that it says a lot for the character and professionalism of Craig that he has been more than willing to hold his hands up on this one"

In between those two incidents, Thomson had awarded a penalty to Celtic after Papac had upended Zheng Zhi, with Aiden McGeady scoring from the penalty spot to bring Celtic back into the match at 2-1.

"Taking charge of an Old Firm game is both high profile and challenging," said Dallas.

"Referees are well aware that their performance will be judged on calling the major decisions correctly.

"Craig and I have had our post match de-brief.

"Whilst I would compliment Craig for his overall handling of yesterday's encounter, he is disappointed at his error of judgement when he decided against awarding a penalty to the visiting team in the 12th minute.

"Our referees are fitter than they have ever been and our referees are better prepared for matches than they have ever been.

"We are working each and every day with our top officials to make sure that they are in a position to get the big calls right.

"However, mistakes are part and parcel of football. I think that it says a lot for the character and professionalism of Craig that he has been more than willing to hold his hands up on this one."

Celtic still keen on Premier League move.

Thursday, 8 October 2009

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has reiterated his desire to see the club quit Scottish football and join the Barclays Premier League.

The prospect of the Old Firm playing teams from England is one which has been raised on a number of occasions, with both clubs aware of the financial benefits of such a move.

The English Premier League are set to meet next month where the possibility of a two-tier system, which could include Celtic and Rangers, may be discussed.

Lawwell said: 'Celtic and Rangers are massive clubs. Celtic certainly has a global reach.

'Our frustration is that we play in a very small market and we don't have a regular platform to tell the Celtic story from.

'We're looking for an opportunity to participate in an environment that gives us that global exposure. And hopefully, through time, that will come.

'We need someone to want us. And, if that benefits Celtic and its supporters, then we'd be delighted to take part.

'For certain, things won't stay the same. There are so many dynamics in world football at the moment and the world is getting smaller.

'We have very strong fundamentals. In the last Deloitte's report we were the eighth biggest club in the world for match-day takings.

'If we had the TV rights value that you get in England, then there is no barrier for Celtic.'

Mick hasnt been playing well either, I agree. But Caldwell demanding a pay hike with a new contract to me has some cheek.

Personally I`d like to see the back of him as he`s useless. I was also dissapointed at O`Dea going out to Reading on loan.

All in all, Its been a dissapointing start to the new season :(

Lennon`s Questions And Answers

Lennon's Social affair
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Celtic Reserve Coach Neil Lennon took part in an interesting Question and Answer session at Solitude last night as part of the build-up to this evening's 130th Anniversary Celebration match between the Bhoys and Cliftonville.
A large gathering assembled in the Social Club and enjoyed in excess of an hour's chat with the Hoops' former midfield general, who stayed on to mingle with supporters long after the conclusion of the event - which touched on subjects ranging from Alan Shearer's infamous kick-out at Filbert Street to a long-running argument with a Scottish lower league manager, as well as the revelation of the best (and worst!) players Lennon has played both alongside and against, not to mention the Cliftonville player he'll most have his eyes on tonight!
The Club would like to pass its thanks on to Mr Lennon for taking part and for the endearing contribution he made towards ensuring the event proved such a success.
