water freezes dry ice is carbon dioxide if i rember from my school days and will freeze you solid but you can`t skate on it.

I've ever only played with dry ice once. I am aware of it's chemical composition. But the basic fact of why one cannot ice skate on dry ice eludes me. Because until it is gas, it is a smooth solid surface. I sure wouldn't wanna be breathing all that C02 gas though, as it sublimates LOL!

who cares its a food thread LOL

Phase diagram of water

OK , under the skate there is a lot of pressure. So at 1 atmosphere (14.7 psi) in the environment for either regular ice or dry ice , bot are solid. From the phase diagrams of reg ice and dry ice, as you increase pressure (vertically) , regular ice under goes a phase change from solid to liquid (so you are skating on a thin film of liquid water (water reduces friction, so you skate freely).

Whereas on the phase diagram of carbon dioxide, by adding pressure you do not undergo a phase transition of solid to liquid, but it is solid to solid. No friction reduction, so you do not glide, hence you cannot skate on dry ice (at least on earth)

there, that's it.

endo.....:p

Now, back to food.

Sorry for being OT
