Immersion query for plumbers

Extra tall lagged tank put in years ago when i got solar panels and the odd time needed to boost temp for power shower via switch to heat the element.

Used to be noisy when switching it on but now it is much quieter and wondering if partly worn out.

Single long coil as no bath in house.

What are you asking?
The element won't be noisy even when new.
Power showers use a pump, do you mean the pump is less noisy?

No the heating element in the Immersion was loud like when you stick the kettle on to boil.

Now it is more silent and unsure if it is heating up the water as i need a good lot of hot water as using a rain soaker head and powered pump.

Funny thing as switched on this morning for 30 mins and only heard a slight noise , 20 mins later much more noise and it got hot.

Can a heating element partially fail?

It is necessary to replace your immersion heater when it warns of signs of wear or inefficiency. Their key indicators are: Inconsistent Heating: When heating water or liquid and they take longer to heat or do not reach the desired temperature, it will indicate a failing condition.17 Dec 2024.

Might be happening to mine with how long it takes

there is also a thermostat in the imersion heater that has a saftey cut out it could also be faulty if your water if eventually heating up but also boiling

Something more has now happened as when i power on immersion i get an electric crackling so not using it and no hot water.

you should have at least stripped it out a while back to have a look at condidion, personally I would just have replaced it they are not to expensive but prices go up the longer you wait

I will need a plumber with the right tool to come out as have a shower pump that might need a service and in that also need solar panel service , always come in threes..

Sorry to hear that yes perhaps not everyone is hands on and cannot do some things and I do not blame you for having to get plumber in , shower pump may only need bleeding as in air has pulled not performing as normal , or is it other problem ? imersion heater spanners are between £5 and £10 pounds.

I used to be hands on with many things and dont trust myself any more to do it right as unsteady on feet and stretching and bending is a curse..

Salamander 2 bar pump CT Force would pump while no taps were on or if showering might pulsate on and off. Mainly only powered on for hot water shower , only cold water now as no hot water.

I have asked a plumbing company for an estimate for all 3 as they have a specialist for solar panels a few days a week.

looking at Salamander images It has pressure vessle (expansion) hopefuly just needing recharged .

Got a price of 330 euros for doing the element in the immersion.
That price may seem steep, but it will to cover the cost of a new cylinder , just in case, it is very easy to crease/twist the cylinder when removing an immersion heater element, I've done it a few times with old elements that get seized into the tank.
Top entry elements are less likely to seize, low side entry are a higher probability of seizing.

Wont cover the cost of a new cylinder as quoted like 1k , yes remember how soft the copper cylinders are when seized , other option spend money on solar panel service and get hot water that way.
Wintertime gas heat will give me hot water.

A bit steep is an understatment , on older cylinders as you may know imersion heaters can be sezied.
a bit of heat from gas torch can help with old boss white good at the time but nightmare when you try to remove

You need a new emm heater. Changed quite a few over the years and old crusty tanks can be a nightmare. On a good day drain tank down a little or all depending where emm heater is. Big ring spanner disconnect and undo. Fit with new ring gasket and fit new cable. Should be qualified Electrician.

As a retired plumber I have never ever known any plumbers who needed an electricain normally just straight swap and if old butyl cable may look faulty or burnt just replace it.

But Years back imersion heaters would just be plug into a socket rather than a spurred socket. And A lot still the same not saying that is correct.

I would be worried with a blow gun heating the cylinder with the insulation on it for one , had one seized many years ago and had to replace the cylinder.

I could go for the service on the solar panels and get hot water back again and when winter comes use my new gas boiler.

cable is wired into switch on wall with bath and sink option even though only got sink in use.
