I don't think codecs have much to do with the device you are using, it is more the type of file compression used on picture and sound on various files.

most boxes can handle any codec to be honest. So a app just needs to be updated to use a particular codec.

I agree. It is the codec support on default player in the case of the Z8, works fine with VLC on the same device.
