Picture Quality

Hi All,

I have very happy with the H2S box so far. Does any one have ant tips to try improve the picture quality ?

I know it's upscaled SD but some channels are poor.

Is it an HD ready or Full HD TV you have? Make sure in the display settings of the box that it's set to 1080.

Full HD I have. Just looking for settings to try and improve the image that's all. Yes it's set to 1080p at 60hz

It was only after the wife had me comparing Freeview E4 and H2S E4, i admitted there was a massive difference in quality. Seems the zGemma boxes have their outputs configured considerably differently to any other box you might plug into your TV, and there are no settings to change them.

I instead tweaked some of the TV settings (contrast, brightness, sharpness, Dynamic contrast, colour, etc.) and it looks loads better now.

Your comparing a (relatively) high bitrate free view signal to a highly compressed lower bitrate satellite feed though. Its apples n pears.
Your box should be set to 1080i 50Hz as this is the settings Sky broadcast in.

That's what the box was already outputting, but after tweaking TV Picture settings, it looks better than Freeview. SD channels are most notably better than freeview now, but even HD channels are superior now.

If I copied H2S recordings to a USB and plugged the USB stick into the TV directly, again, the picture was fantastic. It is just the output on the H2S (or arguably maybe the input on the TV) that needed adjusting.

"That's what the box was already outputting."

No, you said to someone else "Yes it's set to 1080p at 60hz"
1080p isnt 1080i
And
60Hz isnt 50Hz

Sky's output is 1080i at 50Hz

The bitrate of some channels on satellite is terrible, so they will never look as good as a typical freeview channel. Have a look at Motors TV for proof.
Also, what do you mean by "Seems the zGemma boxes have their outputs configured considerably differently to any other box you might plug into your TV"?
Every input on my tv has its own unique settings to get the best picture. My HDMI 1, 2 and 3 all have their contrast, brightness and colour etc set at wildly varying values to get the picture I want. You adjust your tvs settings to suit - no different to if youd just connected up a bluray player and decided for example the brightness or contrast wasnt to your satisfaction.

I think you're confusing me with the OP.

But yes, we are in agreement now. Adjust the settings on the TV to make the picture better.

Can anyone share their tweaks re. contrast/sharpness etc? Been messing with my new LG tv and have not noticed much of a difference so any advice at all would be handy. Cheers

Hi,
You can get buried in the settings on an LG, and some of the advanced ones make a huge difference. I will post my LG settings when I get in from work and u can see what you think.

Funny that

I had a old Samsung tv hd and pic looked OK on sd channels

just upgraded to Samsung 55" 4K UHD smart tv and it's running 1080 50i UHD and it looks shocking

older tv looked loads better on sd channels

If you google your LG tv model along with "picture settings", generally you'll find some settings posted, for example on AV forums, which tend to be pretty good. May be worth giving that a shot?
