Premier League Discussion

"Liam Rosenior is a quality coach who knows the game inside out, and that's what matters most. I want to wish him and his staff all the best.

"But as Chelsea's first black player, I would be lying if I said this moment doesn't move me."

Those are the words of Paul Canoville, who made his historic debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, as their new head coach following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

Carrick confirmed at Manchester United until the end of the season.

I must be honest I don't understand this "knows the club" etc. The club is unrecognisable from 10 years ago. You need a coach who can get the best out of the players they have (or give an absolute rocket).

Bar Fernandes I dont think a single one of the current crop would get near a Ferguson squad. Trying to instil old United values is almost impossible

Manchester City have agreed a deal in principle to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi this month.

Personal terms have not been formally agreed but are not expected to be an issue.

Oliver Glasner said: "My understanding is the deal with Marc is in the final stages." The Austrian then added Guehi will not be in the squad to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

Aston Villa have confirmed Donyell Malen has joined Roma.

Roma’s announcement says the deal is an initial loan with an option to buy the Netherlands striker.

Villa’s statement does not specify, but it is understood the option becomes an obligation to buy him if certain conditions are met.

According to Sky in Italy, Roma will pay a loan fee of £1.7m and then a fee of £21.6m if and when the deal becomes permanent.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed he will leave the club this summer at the end of his contract.

Leicester City have been given an immediate six-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The sanction was handed down by an independent commission.

An EFL statement on Thursday confirmed the news, with Leicester’s breach relating to the three-year period ending with the 2023-24 season.

The deduction leaves Leicester above the Championship relegation zone on only goal difference

Nottingham Forest have sacked head coach Sean Dyche after four months in charge.

It is the third time Forest have dismissed a coach this season after the sackings of Nuno Espirito Santo and Ange Postecoglou.

Arsenal’s Kai Havertz has sustained a muscular injury and is set for a spell out of the team.
The forward is now expected to miss the north London derby on February 22.
The Germany international only returned to action last month, after missing the majority of 2025 through injury, and has featured in Arsenal’s last four games, recording two goals and two assists.

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho on the incident last night:

“Vini was not just happy to score that astonishing goal and the game was over. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way.”

Asked if he thought Vinicius Jr incited the crowd at Estadio da Luz, and the Benfica players, Mourinho replied: “Yes, I believe so. The words they exchanged, Prestianni with Vinicius, I want to be independent, I don’t want to say, ‘I believe Prestianni or don’t believe Vinicius’, because they told two completely different things.

“I told him (Vinicius Jr) that when you score a goal like that, you just celebrate and walk back. When he was arguing about racism, I told him that the biggest person in the history of this club is Black. This club, the last thing that it is, is racist. If in his mind, there was something racist — this is Benfica.

“There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. Every stadium where Vinicius plays, something happens. Always.”

Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni has received a provisional one-match suspension after Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr reported alleged racist abuse during last week's Champions League meeting.

Uefa has imposed the ban on a provisional basis, pending the result of a full investigation by an ethics and disciplinary inspector

Gambling firms not licensed in the UK could be banned from sponsoring sports teams - including Premier League clubs - as part of a government crackdown.

Premier League Bournemouth, Fulham, Newcastle, Wolves and Burnley, were all sponsored by betting websites run by TGP Europe, which had surrendered its British licence after an investigation found it failed to "carry out sufficient checks on business partners" and breached "anti-money laundering rules".

Premier League clubs have previously collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of their matchday shirts by the end of this season.

West Bromwich Albion have sacked head coach Eric Ramsay after only nine games in charge, with the club just one point above the Championship relegation zone.

The 34-year-old was appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal on 11 January following the departure of Ryan Mason.

Former Manchester United coach Ramsay took over with Albion 18th in the table, seven points clear of the bottom three.

A consortium led by former professional poker player James Bord has pulled out of a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday.

The consortium of Bord, Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil was named as the preferred bidder for the Championship club on 24 December.
To all the long-suffering fans of this great Club, it is with the greatest regret that we have decided not to pursue our bid to become your new custodians.

We have fondly watched Wednesday from afar for many years. It is a Club whose glory has been diminished over the years by poor owners who forgot or intentionally disregarded your passion, your history, and your value. You deserved, and deserve, better.

When the opportunity came about to be part of your next chapter, we jumped at the chance and in good faith began the process of purchase. We have always engaged professionally, transparently and constructively with the administrator, EFL and IFR via an exceptional team of advisers.

Tragically, the historic mishandling of the club and pattern of catastrophic under investment means our sizeable binding bid can no longer be justified. The detailed due diligence our advisers have done over the last two months meant that the sizeable binding bid we made can no longer be justified. As widely reported, we have spent over £4m to help run the Club over the last two months and, after much consideration, have decided that we can no longer continue to do so as the exclusivity agreement we signed means only a small amount could be removed from our offer – regardless of the outcome of our analysis work. We know this will be a bitter disappointment to many – who hoped that the ownership saga would soon be over – and for this we can only apologise wholeheartedly. It is a decision that we have come to after much consideration

We want to make one final point. We are lifelong football supporters who have been privileged to travel around the world watching the sport we love. Never in all our lives have we seen such a passionate fanbase as those who follow Sheffield Wednesday. We hope whoever picks up this baton appreciates you as we would have. We hope they understand the need to invest in your team, your stadium and your community. Just one part of that trio of expectation is not enough. We know the rest of your season is going to be challenging, as will the next, but you will rise again to your former glory and when you do, we will be cheering your success.

With best wishes

James, Felix and Faisal
