Premier League Discussion

Phil Foden is set to commit his future to Manchester City after reaching an agreement in principle with the club over a new long-term contract.

Foden’s existing terms are scheduled to expire in June 2027 and a fresh four-year deal will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2030, plus an option to extend by a further 12 months.

Southampton Football Club has today been charged with a breach of EFL Regulations, and the matter will be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission.
This follows a request from the EFL for the Club’s observations after a complaint from Middlesbrough relating to alleged unauthorised filming on private property ahead of the two Clubs meeting in Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has won the Football Writers' Association's men's Footballer of the Year award.

Midfielder Fernandes has scored eight goals and provided 20 assists in 34 games across all competitions for the Red Devils this season.

Fernandes finished with 45% of the votes from the FWA's 900-plus members.

He claimed 28 more votes than Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice in second, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was third.

Chelsea are exploring a deal to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach.

The Spaniard is open to the possibility, but at this stage nothing is decided as the process to hire a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior continues, with outgoing Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola also a strong contender.

Arsenal defender Ben White is expected to miss the rest of the season with a right knee ligament injury.

The full extent of the issue is yet to be established but the initial prognosis is that White has suffered suspected medial collateral ligament damage. He is anticipated to miss Arsenal’s Premier League run-in and the Champions League final on May 31 and it is unlikely he will be fit to play a part at the World Cup for England.

Michael O'Neill will not be taking the Blackburn Rovers job on a permanent basis and will remain in his role as Northern Ireland manager.

Jose Mourinho is in final negotiations to become Real Madrid's next head coach, 13 years after his first spell at the Bernabeu.

The 63-year-old is the clear favourite - and currently the only candidate Real are in talks with over the role.

The independent hearing into Southampton allegedly spying on their Championship play-off opponents Middlesbrough will be heard by Tuesday next week, the English Football League has confirmed.

Middlesbrough are pushing for the greatest sporting sanction possible to be imposed on Southampton, including expulsion from the play-offs.

Carlo Ancelotti has extended his contract as Brazil manager until the 2030 World Cup.

The Italian was appointed to the post in May 2025 after his departure from Real Madrid and he has since secured Brazil's qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico and the United States next month.

Manchester United caretaker head coach Michael Carrick has been named on a six-man shortlist for the Premier League's Manager of the Season award.

Departing Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, Brentford's Keith Andrews and Sunderland's Regis le Bris have also been nominated.

Among the eight players in the running for Premier League Player of the Season are Arsenal trio David Raya, Gabriel and Declan Rice, and Manchester City pair Antoine Semenyo and Erling Haaland.

Also shortlisted are Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Brentford striker Igor Thiago and Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White.

Manchester United and Michael Carrick have reached a broad agreement for the Englishman to become the club’s permanent head coach.

Work is continuing between all parties to finalise contracts for Carrick and his backroom staff, after a two-year deal with the option to extend by 12 months was proposed by the club to the former midfielder.

Nottingham Forest plan to show their faith in Vitor Pereira by handing the head coach a new long-term contract.

Pereira was appointed Forest head coach in February on an 18-month contract and he has another year remaining but, in order to create stability, their aim is to extend his agreement.

The Scottish FA says referee John Beaton and his family "spent last night at home under police surveillance following a leak of personal details online".

The association says that it is calling for "tolerance and perspective to prevent any further, unthinkable escalation".

Beaton has faced criticism following the award of a late penalty, which was converted, in Celtic's 3-2 win at Motherwell on Wednesday.

Seamus Coleman has announced he will finish his Everton playing career at the end of the season, when his contract expires after 17 years at the club

Middlesbrough have called for Southampton to be expelled from the Championship play-off final over the Spygate saga that has dominated the EFL end-of season showpiece.

Boro will not be permitted to take part in the hearing so they are calling on the EFL to expel Southampton from the play-offs in the interests of fairness and to deter clubs from spying in future.

If the final outcome is not to Boro's liking - so any result which results in Saints still playing Hull on 23 May - they have no right to appeal against the decision or challenge it.

It is standard practice for there to be only two "interested parties" in a disciplinary hearing - the one bringing the charge, in this case the EFL, and the other defending it, Southampton.

But Boro argue that it is unfair that they are now, in effect, locked out of the process.

After all, it is they who raised the complaint and provided all the evidence. They are the "party" who was being impacted by the spying.

Casemiro's fond farewell - how Brazilian turned Man Utd career around

"One more year, one more year, Casemiro."

They know it won't happen, but it won't stop Manchester United's fans belting out their ode to the Brazilian when he makes his final Old Trafford appearance for the club against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

It has been sung frequently at United games over the second half of the season, especially when Casemiro has scored, and most recently when he gave his side an early lead in a key Premier League game against Brentford last month.

The 34-year-old responded by kissing and pointing to the badge on his shirt.

United's supporters lapped it up.

It was all a far cry from 30 December 2024. That was a day of infamy among the normally loyal and vociferous United fanbase as they turned on striker Joshua Zirkzee, when he was substituted in just the 33rd minute by Ruben Amorim during a particularly woeful home defeat by Newcastle.

Rights holder TNT Sports has broken with tradition by ending free-to-air access to all three European cup finals.

In previous years, the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League finals have been free to watch for football fans in the UK..

TNT Sport’s rights for all three European cups change from the 2027-28 season, with the Champions League moving to Paramount and Sky Sports picking up the Europa League and Conference League.

The Guardian are reporting that Southampton players are considering legal action against club. Loss of earnings on a promotion bonus and PL wage bump because their employer broke the rules.

Eckert has also confirmed in evidence that he was aware of the spying but didnt realise it wasnt allowed in England as its widespread in Europe.

A statement from Phil Parsons, Chief Executive, Southampton Football Club.

We have appealed yesterday's decision by the Independent Disciplinary Commission to expel Southampton Football Club from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs, and to impose a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season. Before turning to that appeal, I want to address our supporters, our players, and the wider football community directly and without equivocation.

What happened was wrong. The club has admitted breaches of EFL Regulations 3.4 and 127. We are sorry to the other clubs involved, and most of all to the Southampton supporters whose extraordinary loyalty and support this season deserved better from the club.

We have provided our full co-operation to the EFL's investigation and disciplinary process. Following the appeal, we will also be writing to the EFL to volunteer our participation in a working group on the practical application and enforcement of Regulation 127 across the Championship. Contrition without change is hollow, and we intend to demonstrate change.

On the appeal itself: we accept that there should be a sanction. What we cannot accept is a sanction which bears no proportion to the offence. Whereas Leeds United was fined £200,000 for a similar offence, Southampton has been denied the opportunity to compete in a game worth more than £200 million and one which means so much to our staff, players and supporters.

Portland Timbers have confirmed that they have parted company with head coach Phil Neville by mutual consent.

Neville's final match in charge was Sunday's 3-1 defeat to San Jose Earthquakes that left the Timbers third from bottom in the Western Conference, eight points adrift of an automatic MLS play-offs spot.

AC Milan have sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri after failing to qualify for the Champions League, in a season the club's hierarchy described as an "unequivocal failure".

Milan fell from third to fifth in Serie A after a 2-1 defeat by Cagliari on the final day to miss out on Champions League football for the second year in a row.
