I went in the loft last Wednesday to get a suitcase out then later that day I felt a red lump on the left side of my neck.
I thought I'd been bitten by something but over the weekend 1 turned into 2 3 4 then more started to appear then all into and around my ear which turned into sunburnt hot.
There now were they've crusted but new appeared yesterday and I've unpleasant aches in the top/back of my head and a sore neck like you've slept funny.

I left it till yesterday thinking it would go away (about a week) but I got a new spot on the top of my bonce and I felt abit ill more unwell like a sh*tty cold.
I rang 111 yesterday who said go up to the local chemist who'd they'd emailed he said he "thinks" poss shingles but I needed to go to the doctors but didn't rule out bacterial infection of some sort as well.

Anyone had shingles on the neck and into the ear as I'm told it's more around the hip back area ?.
Going to try see a doctor so I've contacted The Pope see if he can get me in today

Shingles is very serious. While you are waiting to speak to a doctor, go to your local pharmacy this morning and speak to the pharmacist to ask their opinion -

Yes, shingles can affect the neck and ears:
  • Herpes zoster oticus
A common complication of shingles, this condition is also known as Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. It can cause a rash around the neck, face, ear, mouth, and scalp, as well as intense ear pain and facial nerve paralysis. In about 90% of cases, the cranial nerve VII (nervus facialis) is affected, which can lead to shingles in the ear, face, neck, and/or mouth. Other forms of herpes zoster oticus can affect the cranial nerve VIII (nervus vestibulocochlearis), which can cause balance system issues like vertigo and dizziness.
  • Internal shingles
When shingles affects internal organs, it can cause serious complications that require immediate medical attention. Symptoms can include hearing loss, ear pain, and weakness in facial muscles. However, internal shingles doesn't usually cause a rash, which can make it difficult to diagnose.

I phoned 111 yesterday they sent email to my local chemist to let them know I was calling so I went up yesterday late on. He wasn't 100% it was shingles so he said ring your docs first thing in the morning and get in to see them. I asked is there anything you can give me he said no.
So I rang at 8am this morning 25minute wait then they texted me a link while I was on the phone and I sent them pics so I'm waiting on them getting back to me but right now I feel worse I feel like dog shit and my necks worse than yesterday plus a pounding headache.

my doctors surgery has to be the worse on the planet to actually get to see someone, I could have done the pics thing last night with askmygp but the pharmacist said no , ring and get a face 2 face in the morning. I suppose I have to have a dinghy paddle in my hand and say I can't speak english

I rung it failed even though I asked to see a doctor

Oh man! Keep trying and pushing to get to see a doctor. I know that you shouldn't have to do this, but it seems like this is the way with most GP surgeries these days. When you speak to them don't downplay the symptoms. Shingles is very serious and you should be a priority case

Honestly I've tried, the phones totally jammed I tried ringing again just. My only contact is driving down and sitting there and to be honest the way I feel I don't think it's a good idea.
I'm not sure what to do and get this, we've no walk in centre it's 6 miles away in the next town. I'm not playing it up trying to be negative but I could do with seeing someone today.

If they don't get hold of me today then I'm afraid it's A&E bolloks to 111 and walk in I feel proper sh*t

I feel for you man. A lot of hospitals have minor injury departments. If I was you I would just head for hospital and be prepared to wait. You do really need to see someone today. Let us know how you get on emoji_clap

Good to see you're still about bud👍

So I phoned the doctors back at 12:30 never got a call and Weds the phone lines end 12:30
I thought my only option was 111 again. I wanted till 1:15 and rang 111, they said they can give me an appointment at a walk in centre 6-7miles away heavy traffic and I wasn't up for that drivingi said why can't I go walk in centre or town or hospital
She said I can only offer the one 6-7 mile away.

So I thought if it's my only way of getting to see someone and I'm getting worse I'll take it.
She said great can you get there for 1:30? And that's after I explained how I was feeling.

I told her impossible she said your only option is A&E which was a no no. She said I'll get a clinician give you call.
2 hours later 3:15 he rings I goes through all the crap again. He says I can refer you via "appointment" to the small ailments walk in at the hospital 3pm.
So gets there 2:55 I says I've an appointment from 111 all that she then said it's not an appointment it's a slot. I says how long she says yesterday 4-5 hours.
It took 2 hours confirmed shingles I was given a prescription for anti biotics stop infection on the big scabs. And cream anti viral. Doctor says use the chemist and pointed to it 100 yard away on the hospital grounds. I queued up 25 minutes to be told you can't use green prescriptions you have to go chemist.

So off Tesco chemist, waited 30 minutes only to get home and they'd given me anti viral tablets no cream which I thought might sooth ease the rash.
I gets home my GP phones were talking after 6pm he says apologies the receptionist had me in another box and he only just spotted it.

One thing I can say is 2 Eastern European were in front of me at the hospital checkout.
She was showing something on her phone I think it was a doctor's message or something.
She was also showing her passport, both didn't match. She couldn't speak English and she started shouting banging on the window till the receptionist checked her in.

She basically queued jumped the system pretending she'd been fast tracked to the walk in with an appointment.

As she was walking off she was mouthing off top note doubt a volley of her own language abuse and smug laugh.
I got in the waiting room it was 50% people none speaking English older people. Nope I'm not racist I'm stating what I saw. Pay your taxes all your life to basically fund elderly people who head here to be fixed and they haven't paid a penny.

Anyway taking tabs should be right in a week but I know one thing it's not nice when your older like my mumps 20 year ago. I felt similar plus I carried round with me for a fortnight a testicle the size of a SpaceHopper

I’m sorry for your experience, but glad you got proper medication 💊 Antibiotics should start working in 2/3 days. Hope you feel better soon 😊

So coming on for nearly two weeks and I'm still getting the nasty stabbing pains, mainly around the back of the ear and some on top of my head.
Scabs on neck dropping off but the spots in out around my ear came rough 4-5 days after the neck outbreak.
Has anyone had shingles later in life ?. How long does the nerve ends pain stay ? I'm slightly deaf in that ear so I'm wondering if I've an ear infection or something and that's causing the stabbing sensation behind it.
Tell you what, it ain't fookin nice. When someone said it's a form of chicken pox I thought is
Spots n chicken soup
Fookin far far from it. The adverts now on the Tele over 65s or weak immune 50s free vaccination and the doc said there's a massive rise in shingles that's why

All's I can say if you fit into the above category go get it done because this ain't one but nice

I thought Sunday I'm feeling better so I cut grass back & front takes about 2 hours. When I'd done huge pains behind ear had to borrow some gabapentin off a neighbor go straight bed fooked seriously painful neuropathic pain.

Got up today still there but not as severe. I hope it's gone for the weekend suppose be at a do all day

Aww man, I'm sorry to hear that. My uncle had shingles as an adult about 20 years ago. I just remember him being covered in the tell tale scabs. I didn't know much about it, but I was told how serious it was. I really hope it clears up for this wknd for you. emoji_clap

Yep serious it was as i got advised to get the jabs before it happened 500 Euro OMG.
With a crappy immune system it was the way to go.
Is the NHS doing free injections?.
Hope you get over it quicker M8

They say it normally lasts between 3-5 weeks

Thanks all,
It will be 3 weeks this Wednesday since I seen the first spot. I'm still getting the sharp pains behind the ear and on the ear and a terrible stiff neck.
It also feels like scalp sore but it's very slowly beginning to calm down. I can't touch my ears especially were all the spots are the nerve ends are still very painful in that area.

I honestly never ever realised how uncomfortable it can be. That neuropathic pain is not nice at all.
I'd like say don't get it but too be honest it just lies dormant so there's basically nothing you can do.

To anyone who does get it especially around the neck and head I truly sympathise. I found a big relief taking gabapentin but anti depressants also do the trick.
