Do you have to use a Mac address starting with 00:1A:79 or will any Mac address work?

For example, could I use a Mac Address from my microwave oven?

Has to be the Mac attached to the sub.

Any format should work.

if your provider is happy to use a non stranded MAG-BOX mac then yes you can set it to anything you want. it would actually help your provider to protect against brute forcing macs as 00:1A:79 is half the unique address they only need to brute XX:XX:XX.

Ive added the mac from my microwave which was PH:IL:LI:PS:23 but it’s saying do I wish to renew warranty :-)

BTW, I used the Mac address from an old VOIP and it works fine. So I guess the answer is.....
