I think your post is in the wrong section!

It can be moved anyway.

Update kb822603 is for USB 1.1 & 2.00 on an XP machine with SP1.

Is your machine still on Service Pack 1?

What are you using to connect to the Net? is it a USB connection to a modem/router?

If I give you the Hotfix as an attachment in a post can you not run it on the machine? (It's an executable).

As in copy it to the machine, not run it off CD.

No, I mean copy it from the CD you made to the problematic PC & then run it.

OR

Put it on a pen drive if you have one & the PC will let you read it?

OR
Has the PC got a NIC (RJ45) that you could connect directly to the router just so you can patch the update or even upgrade it to SP3?

First we must just check the Cryptographic Services is actually running on your machine.

To do this:

Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
Double-click Services. (this will open the services window)
Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.

Are you still getting the cryptographic Msg.?

When you check in the services section in control panel is it started or stopped?

Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following commands, pressing the ENTER key on your keyboard after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Now type exit to close the command prompt window, and then try to install the update again.

You may in some rare instances have to reboot your machine again first, so give this a try if it fails again...

Apologies moh, I lost contact for a while...... (I actually thought TK was down).

Don't try to install SP3 on that machine just yet.

To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), either Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) must already be installed.

You don't have to buy it or get it on Disc either, you can download it using your working machine.

SP1a

SP2

SP3

There are more step to try if or whenever you want to continue:

You need to re-register some DLL files.

Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following commands, pressing the ENTER key on your keyboard after each line:

net start cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Now type the word: exit and the window will close. Now Reboot and try and reapply the Microsoft Patch again...

Note:

If you get a reply stating "access denied" try starting your machine in SAFE MODE and then repeating the above.. For SAFE MODE press F8 when your PC starts up but, BEFORE you get the Windows XP screen!

If you have the patience I'll make the time and I'm sure we can nail this one down.

If above fails there are still a few more steps we can try.

I know only too well how frustrating this can be, so if you don't want to continue, just say the word.

Batch File

moh,

Seeing as you were so tired last night LOL!,

I wrote a small Batch File that will do some of the work for you ;-)

It will

Start the cryptsvc Service.
Register all the above mentioned DLL files necessary for you.
Restart the machine.

Download the file, Run it on the problematic PC, and after the machine restarts, try to apply the update again.
