What's new

usb to null modem

fergpgsly

Newbie
im new to this and have decided to try and flash my kryptview, my laptop is new and the null lead has not got a port that will connect to it, i am now wondering if my usb to null lead will cause me any problems

Hi fergpgsly

You will need to use two leads joined together. The Null modem lead joined to a USB to serial lead. You will also have to install a driver for the USB to serial lead and then set the COMM ports up. Note this can be very tricky as different drivers can give different results on different Operating systems and computer BIOS.
If you percevere with finding the driver to suit your system, and are competent setting the COMM port then you will have no problem.

If however you have major problems and keep getting "download not requested", (depends how you are with comps) then find someone with an older comp that has the 9pin serial port so you can just simply use the NULL cable by itself as then you have no drivers needed to install or COMM port to set up. Its much simpler.

Pictures of leads and more info here. http://www.techkings.org/kryptview/35814-some-kryptview-problem-solving-tips-tricks.html

To sumarise, the NULL cable must be used whichever way you flash the box, by itself on an old comp (easiest way), or connected to a USB to serial lead (hardest way).

Hi fergpgsly,

Null modem to box is best but if you can't get one here are some settings you will
have to use with a USB lead.

Here is what you need to do if you keep getting "download not requested"

first download the prolic driver from here

If you didn't receive a driver with the USB lead.

Plug you lead into a USB slot on your computer.

If the driver has been correctly installed it should show down the bottom right of the screen as a plug and play device.

Go to start - devices and printers.

From top to bottom of your screen, you should have, devices, printers and faxes and if the driver is installed
correctly you should have a third catagory showing "unspecified", there it should show Prolific USB to Serial Com Port (COM 7) for example.

Right click on the icon - properties - hardware - properties - port settings - changes the bits per second to 115200

Save the changes and exit.

Use the KV loader program and set the com port in the loader to COM 7 in this example.

(So the loader program matches the com port being used by the USB lead on your computer)

Switch the box off by the switch at the back, load in the BIN file hit the download and switch the box on at the back.

Where the USB lead meets the Null sometimes you get a bit of a crap connection
you may have to give it a few wiggles

Good Luck.

thanks for your help ppl, i have followed instructions and my usb conection/diver has the yellow exclamation mark next to it what am i doin wrong?

What does it say if you click on the exclamation mark ?

You may not have the driver installed correctly,
should just act like a plug and play device down the
bottom right of your screen when you connect it.

Try rebooting your computer and see if it clears,
If not re install the driver.

BEES thank you for your interest, i clicked on the exclamation mark, it said problem may be fixed if its reinstalled, i applied the fix ran the reinstaller, but its saying not fixed driver has problems com 4 ? i need a proper step by step idiots guide i think

If you have a driver installation disc, then just run it.

If not you will need to download one and follow the steps below. Note you will have to use Winrar to unzip them when downloaded.

There are a couple of driver links here you can try, and a link to download and install winrar if you have not alreadt got it installed

http://www.techkings.org/kryptview/35814-some-kryptview-problem-solving-tips-tricks.html

You need to double mouse click on the exclamation mark device and select the "driver" tab, and then select "update driver". Then select "browse my computer" then use the browse feature to select the location of the driver wherever you have put it like the desktop. Then select ok to install the driver.

Jodav is right, if you buy an expensive lead
they usually come with drivers.

If you bought a cheap one like I did, you may need to try a couple of different
drivers until it recognises it properly, I just pointed you in the direction
of a popular one. You may need a bit of trial and error at this stage
before you go onto the next step.

Also at least you know the com port number you should set
the loader program to when you get to that part.

hello i deleted the driver and downloaded the limk above, i still have the yellow exclamation mark, but it is now saying not configured correctly ?

Starting to run out of ideas now.

Can you definitely not get hold of an old computer
so you don't have to mess with this lead ?

Or do you know anyone with a working box
so you can flash it using the "box to box" method ?

Or have they got a website for the lead where you can download
a driver from in case they have updated it ?

Think you are going to need the correct driver, but also
have you tried just going to the next step and changing the port settings

(Right click on the icon - properties - hardware - properties - port settings - changes the bits per second to 115200)

and see if that clears the problem ?

thanks for your patience kiddo, i will have to get my mates box and do it that way, im getting cant open comm 1 so i changed it to comm4 got the same, no parimiters, i had it at 115200 as it asked but it wont have it

Plug in the USB adapter with nothing else attached.

Download and install this on your PC 3DP Chip - Downloads - TechKings

Once installed run it then look through the list of drivers needed, you will see something to do with USB somewhere on the list.

Click it, if it has more than 2 options it will show a plus at the side, select it if what you want doesn't show.

Follow the link to the download page and download and install the driver for the device.

Restart pc and retry your box now.
