HDD:
If your HDD is temperamental, put your receiver into deep standby, disconnect the power cable, open the casing and then disconnect the HDD. This will avoid issues with mountpoints changing.
ABM list of regions/areas:
On most receivers, pressing the Media button will open a list box. This is a better presentation and allows jumping through pages with left/right instead of going through every entry.
While in providers you can press the media button/file list to bring up a list of regions.HDD no longer in the box mate. Just using usb for epg and shows as media/hdd.
If need to put HDD in box again in future mainly for recording would it need to be in deep standby the box or can I just turn off at the switch at back of the box?
In regards to your second point/paragraph, what do you mean mate as don't understand?
Always have units powered off at rear for removing cables or usb sticks and for your case unplugged from wall if deep diving inside box.
Be safe and think health and safety for your box and you at all times.

Did you do what Pablo said?
USB devices are designed to be hot swappable. There is no physical harm in removing flash memory. However the problem occurs with mountpoints changing especially when a device is in use and also used for EPG storage. So best to put receiver in deep standby before removing the device. Just turning the switch off is not a good idea.
You switch receiver off by putting in deep standy then turning the switch if you want to. Just turning the switch off causes problemsSo if you turn box off at the bottom if taking usb out or inserting it could it damage the box or corrupt the usb?
