hi wozza, is it an electric powered seat? If so it could be the motor, or the gears between motor and seat were typically made of plastic and frequently get worn.

if i had to guess id say most likely a problem with the switch.see if you can get a wiring diagram you can unplug the switch and jump the connections to try to bring the seat backwards.what is the year of your beamer?
well it's not the motor if its moving forward, it does'nt sound if it is electricial because power is going to the motor
as wheelo said it sounds like a gear problem
