I just read an admin on other forum say that sky confirmed on telephone that all channels including sd will be moving to new encryption by the end of the year.

I dont know how it all works etc but the chap seems to be of a decent standing.

Can only wait and see how the next few weeks pan out

Remours on WOS are hd and sd going to new coding by end of summer

Does that mean that sly are updating encryption on their existing SD boxes or just SD content on HD boxes? Do the old SD boxes even have the capability to decrypt this new encryption? If not then surely a CS server would just need a non HD card and subscription?

They cannot swap all SD boxes by then, a process which they havent even started.

SD paired boxes will remain fine,, as these cannot use the new codes or EPG

so to confirm there is two systems in use

new ecm code for HD boxes - already implemented on certain HD channels and may slowly affect the remianing including SD channels

old ecm code for SD boxes - which they cannot implement the epg / ecm code on these boxes as the software is not compatable - SD will remain untill SD boxes are swapped out....again hasnt even been started

first off how do you know that they cant use the new encryption.???/
second do you know how the new encryption works as nobody else does.
third every one talks about oh they will have to swap boxes nagra didn't need to swap boxes they used two different methods. but they both done the same job.
i would guess more than likely they just don't install older type off boxes again like nagra

my 2 cents worth

The way i see it is we are on a quite enjoyable roller-coaster and we will get off when it stops; Until then why do we keep on harping on about it.

Enjoy the ride FFs.

we have other options now. so when sat cs does eventually go I don't see it as of much of a problem..nowt us end users can do about it in anycase (sat cs), if we can help in someway then fine but no point in whining n winging about it, suck it up and move on .we all thort it was the end of world when cable n3 came and turned our stb's into door stops.but we discovered sat cs- now low and behold cable is back as a option again along with iptv services. xbmc is also another very good option. so just enjoy your sat till then or pay Murdoch/branson a fecking fortune.. just saying like

Just when we hoped SD will be around for a while. Its been a great journey no matter what happens.

The options people have mentioned like cable, didnt the nagra encryption make the cable boxes useless?

the new coding is out already that is why you are loosing HD. this has happend before however, i do think we will keep SD channels for a while. if not it has been a good run. what about the people who have just bought the new vu range of boxes i bet they feel sick.

Yeah, i always thought with the cost of those types of box that the risk was just way too high.

I think it will end up like sly Italia - no more unless you pay sly rip off prices.
I have lost CI and History on VU+duo but have managed to find again on slyboxF5S and working fine - just struggling to update the vu+ box.
Have 3 months subscription left on VU and will have to think long and hard to going somewhere else.
Am sure all our providers (non sly) are working on 'fixes', it just takes time. Just watch SD but increase colour slightly....

While we are all concerned about losing HD channels (and maybe SD in the future), it's pretty safe to say that guys running CS servers might be slightly more concerned about losing revenue as a result of this change.

I am assuming a few CS server operators might be working on a fix or perhaps even keen on funding the indie hackers who can come up with a fix; to keep the ££ coming in.

Would skybox.cc produce something to play this new codec as I'm sure they will lose out shocking.

I signed up to follow info on this.

I'm one of those people. I've not long spent £265 on an x-duo. Nobody knows how long SD will be around for or it it will, that and SD content is awful on my TV.

I know nobody is to blame in this situation and you pay your money and take your chance. But I currently feel like I've had an extremely expensive months viewing and will soon have a nice paperweight.

Lesson learned.

With what I've heard and read The new Epg update from sky is nothing more than a Subscription Card+/Sky hd Box+/internet connection..and a new codex If one of these is not present then the channel wanting to view will not work. Has what happens with the skybox no internet connection all you get is SCRAMBLED. So the servers have got to get a fix that does all the three. Yes we'll lose Hd but surely thats not a big problem cause if I did subscribe to sly then I wouldn't pay extra for this anyway so SD will be fine. Sd will be around for a few years yet mostly because sly need to change everyone to hd and this will cost money. About 4+ million users are Sd subscribers and not every one has Internet or even a phone line so changing things over time is the only cost effective way. Also by tempting New and already customers with the offer of free Hd boxes and free Hd Channels, as hd will only be only way forward what with the release of new affordable 4k Tvs phasing out Sd altogether. What with the announcement of the new sky cloud box due for release in 18months. In the meantime a fix from servers and also the Manufacture of the Skyboxes etc will Hopefully be in place.
Script from a sky source....

Future updates
Sky has also said that it is not stopping when the new EPG comes out in April, and that it is already working on a number of other new features ahead of an even bigger planned update in a couple of years time.
WIth this Sd will be around for at least a few years to come....

Hey all, have been reading this thread with great interest. Was moments away from buying a new HD box but I think I'll hold off for now. So am I right in thinking that the current state of play is that there's no HD channels available, but the SD seems to be working fine? That's good enough for me tbh. Does this change people's recommendations for which box to purchase? I was initially thinking about an OpenBox X5 or SF5, but then after speaking to some people on here I was advised the Vu range or Octoagon (more in my price range). Still worth getting an Octagon box given this current drama with the HD channels?

As krazydude says, let's hope the SD channels keep working and that someone comes in with a fix. Any fresh advice on buying a new box would be appreciated.

I have virgin media internet. Pretty much all the TSmedia sites are blocked (ice films. 1channel etc). So that rules out that option for me.

Plus I have a HTPC I use XBMC with for all that. With a VPN installed.

I won't even chance putting it on eBay to try and recoup some cash because knowing my luck It'd get reported and I'd get suspended or such.

Sorry to sound like a bit of an arse but SD doesn't cut it for me. And I'm rather annoyed with myself right now for wasting so much cash.
