Delight as Mohamed Bangura signs for Celtic

By: Paul Cuddihy on 30 Aug, 2011

CELTIC are delighted to announce the signing of Mohamed Bangura, who has joined the club on a four-year deal.

The highly-rated striker was an impressive performer for AIK Stockholm last season, having moved to the club following a successful loan spell at another Swedish side, IFK Varnamo. And the 22-year-old has also been capped by Sierra Leone.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, manager Neil Lennon said: “We believe Mohamed is a player of real quality and someone who has the potential to make a big contribution to Celtic.

“He comes highly recommended by people in the Swedish game. We have had him watched for a year or so, and all the reports have been very positive, and I know Mohamed is excited about joining the club.

“He’s a young player and someone with great enthusiasm for Celtic and for the challenge ahead, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming him to the squad.”

And the player is thrilled to be joining Celtic. Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Mohamed said: “I am delighted to be joining a club the size of Celtic.

“I’m flattered that someone like Henrik Larsson would recommend me. I know all about Henrik and what a great player he was for Celtic, and I’m looking forward to joining up with my new team-mates and working hard to do well at Celtic and help the club be successful.”

Bangura: I want to follow in Henrik’s footsteps

By: Laura Brannan on 30 Aug, 2011

MOHAMED Bangura was thrilled to sign for Celtic today and he is hoping that he can follow in the footsteps of Hoops legend Henrik Larsson, who has spoken highly of the Sierra Leone player.

The new Bhoy impressed Larsson, who saw him playing in Sweden last season for AIK Stockholm. And the 22-year old striker is honoured by the compliments paid to him by the Super Swede.

“It is very flattering to be recommended by Henrik Larsson, and it's a very good feeling,” Bangura exclusively told the Celtic website.

“I know all about Henrik and what a great player he was for Celtic, and I’m looking forward to joining up with my new team-mates and working hard to do well at Celtic and help the club be successful.

“But I don't feel any pressure, though. I'm just very happy and I'm looking forward to the move. I am delighted to be joining a club the size of Celtic.

“I want to bring joy to the team, and I want to bring joy to myself. I want to give them what they need. Celtic are a step forward for me, and this was the right time for me to make the move.”

Bangura will join up with the Celtic squad after the international break, which will see Sierra Leone take on South Africa next Tuesday, and he is determined to win a place in the starting XI.

It will be the striker’s first time in Scotland and he is hoping to make an instant impact.

“I will be over soon but first I have to play for my country," he said. "From there I'll go straight to Scotland and join up with Celtic.

“I feel good. I've played in Europe for a while now so I feel ready. I'm here to play, so I will fight for a starting place.”

Kennedy expects a wealth of talent in Barca clash

By: Laura Brannan on 31 Aug, 2011

JOHN Kennedy understands better than most how the Celtic Under-19s will be feeling ahead of this evening’s (Wednesday) NextGen Series clash with Barcelona’s teenagers.

The youth coach broke through the Celtic Academy at the age of 16 and went on to play against the Catalan giants in the Camp Nou in the UEFA Cup four years later.

Now helping to lead his own squad of players into their own European tie against Barca, he paid tribute to the outstanding talent which will be coming to Celtic Park.

“I think it’s something everyone is aware of because of the players Barcelona bring through the system and the amount of players they have in their first-team at this current time,” Kennedy told the official website.

“It’s a benchmark when you look at the quality and type of players they bring through. But it’s not easy to do that and spend a lot of money on it, so if we get one or two through a season it would be very good.”

But while Kennedy would love to see Celtic replicate Barcelona’s youth academy, he knows they have to be realistic about the number of players they produce on a regular basis.

“We have good players on the system so it’s just a matter of when the manager feels it’s the right time to unleash them," he said.

“He’s under pressure ever year though, it’s the way the job is at Celtic, he has to win. But he’s done it with James Forrest, he’s brought him in, unleashed him and he’s done a fantastic job.

“The manager has belief in youth, but it’s just a matter of choosing when the time is right and who the player will be.”

Kennedy understands his side will play a different style of football to Barcelona, but feels this is something the young Hoops can use to their advantage.

“We played Marseille a few weeks ago and in the second-half we played a Scottish style and mixed it up a little bit,” he said.

“We seemed to have a bit of success with it but every game is different. You go to France, or Spain or Italy and everywhere seems to be different.

“We obviously know what to expect from Barcelona, they will be technically very good and they’ll be more than happy to get in and about us.

"But I think if we can concentrate on our game and play the way we normally do then we’ll cause them some problems too.

“The players just have to go and enjoy themselves rather than get caught up in the scenario of the night. They just have to go and play their normal game and if they do that they will have a lot to show.”

Tickets for the Barcelona match on Wednesday, August 31 (KO: 7.45pm) are now on sale and are priced £5 adults and £2 concessions.

Season book holders can still buy a three-match package for the NextGen Series by visiting the Celtic Ticket Office, £10 adults and £5 concessions.

Tickets for the game tonight are now only available from the Celtic Park Ticket Office which will be open ‘til kick-off time at 7.45.

And Young Hoops Club members can claim a FREE ticket upon presentation of their current membership card at the Ticket Office, when an adult ticket is purchased at the same time.

Neil Lennon - Club Statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 31 Aug, 2011 19:10
CELTIC Football Club have released the following statement regarding the verdict at today's court case in Edinburgh.

"It is for the Jury to decide on this case, however, we find the accused's acquittal of the charge of assault difficult to comprehend bearing in mind our knowledge of the incident.

"One thing is clear - this was a disgraceful incident involving Neil Lennon, seen by the world - the sort of incident which should not have happened in any football stadium and one which embarrassed Scottish football.

"Regardless of the verdict reached, we hope that people will learn from the events of last season and realise these cannot be repeated.

“As always we will give Neil Lennon our full support and hope that this season he can be given the opportunity to be allowed to do his job without the kind of threats, attacks and intimidation which have marred much of his time in Scotland."

Celtic reinstated in UEFA Europa League subject to appeal

By: Newsroom Staff on 02 Sep, 2011

CELTIC were today reinstated in the UEFA Europa League, subject to appeal, after UEFA upheld the club's complaint relating to the matches against FC Sion.

The Swiss club were charged by UEFA of fielding ineligible players in both Europa League play-off ties against the Hoops and the two European games were played under protest by Celtic.

FC Sion were initially drawn against Atletico Madrid, Udinese and Rennes in the group stages of the Europa League. Celtic will now take the Swiss side's place in the competition, subject to an appeal.

A club spokesperson said: “We have been advised by UEFA that the two protests relating to the matches against FC Sion have been upheld, as a result of which each match has been forfeited in favour of Celtic.

“We are pleased by this decision, the approach which has been taken by UEFA and the fact that UEFA rules and regulations have been upheld. We are also grateful for the support of the SFA in this matter."

What sort of proffessional team plays unregistered players??? Good news (or not) for Celtic though. The or not I refer too is the amount of matches they will have to play to get to a Final.

[h=1]Celtic win top European award for Ability Counts programme[/h]

By: Newsroom Staff on 07 Sep, 2011

CELTIC is delighted to have been awarded the Best Community & Social Responsibility Programme for 2011 for the Ability Counts Initiative from the ECA. This prestigious award was presented at the European Club Association’s Official Dinner in Geneva earlier this week.

The aim of the Awards is to reward outstanding Club performances, encouraging best practice, highlighting successful club management and strengthening relationships between ECA Member Clubs.

Celtic’s Ability Counts Programme was specifically designed for children with Down’s Syndrome and was launched in November 2010. The programme has been a huge success, with excellent feedback from parents, participants and Down’s Syndrome Scotland. The three main objectives of the programme are:

- To engage within the heart of the community, focusing on children with
Down’s Syndrome providing an opportunity to play football in a fun, but
challenging, environment;
- To improve overall fitness levels and health and wellbeing in children with
Down’s Syndrome and increase social skills through teaching individual and
team skills
- To promote inclusion and enhance society’s acceptance of diversity through the positive presence of this programme.

For the first time, the ECA CSR Award Winner was nominated by an independent panel composed of the following members:
Mr. Senes Erzik, UEFA Vice-President and Chairman of the Committee for Fair Play & Social Responsibility at both UEFA (2009-11) and FIFA,
Mr. Avraham Burg, Chairman of Mifalot, Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC’s Education & Social Project (Winner of the ECA CSR Award 2010)
Mr. Ivo Belet, leading Member of the European Parliament (MEP) on football matters; author of the European Parliament report on the future of professional football in Europe.

Mr. Ivo Belet, who presented the award to Celtic, said: “This is a perfect example of how a club’s role goes well beyond the field of play. The ability to enrich their local communities, I believe, knows no bounds.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell added: “It is a tremendous honour to have received this Award, one of only four Awards given by the European Club Association - we are indeed in fantastic company.

"We pride ourselves on being a Club open to all and this award highlights our continued work within the local community. We could not achieve this without the commitment of Robert Docherty and his staff in the Celtic Foundation. Their work in this area deserves immense credit. These initiatives are what, I firmly believe, set Celtic apart.”

Pandora Summerfield, Chief Executive, Down’s Syndrome Scotland said: “We are delighted to hear about the Ability Counts project winning the European Club Association’s CSR Award.

"Celtic’s willingness to work with us and make this project a success cannot be understated, they have gone above and beyond our expectations and have given the children and their families some special memories as well as improved their football skills”

Robert Docherty, Head of Celtic Foundation, said: “To receive this Award is a fantastic achievement for the Club and the Celtic Foundation. Celtic Football Club is for people regardless of age, race, ability, gender or religion and is very proud of its history and supportive of its local community.

“This award demonstrates and acknowledges the work that the Club is involved in. I would like to thank Down’s Syndrome Scotland for their support in this excellent programme.”

Other Awards presented on the evening were:
European Club of the Year 2011
FC Barcelona - for their outstanding results during the 2010/11 season at
both European and domestic level.

Best Sporting Progress 2011
SC Braga - for their great progress in European competition in the 2010/11
Season

Best Achievement (non-sporting) 2011
FK Baku - for the development of a new Youth Academy

("Celtic’s willingness to work with us and make this project a success cannot be understated, they have gone above and beyond our expectations and have given the children and their families some special memories as well as improved their football skills”)
Well and truly deserved.:Thumbs up:

[h=2]Celtic Football Club Statement
[/h] By: Newsroom Staff on 17 Sep, 2011 15:44
CELTIC Football Club has issued a statement on a Daily Record article printed today.

The newspaper carried a back page headline asking: "WHO'S MORE HATED AT IBROX? (Is it Lennon or the taxman?)".

A spokesperson for Celtic Football Club commented:

"Clearly, given the year Neil Lennon and his family have experienced - with bombs, bullets, death threats and physical assaults - this kind of reporting is inflammatory, highly irresponsible and quite simply offensive. For this newspaper to treat the matter in this insensitive and ill-judged manner is astonishing.

Celtic has today been inundated with complaints from supporters relating to this story and the Club fully understands their feelings on this issue.

There is no question, on the eve of a Rangers v Celtic match to use "Lennon, "Hate" and "Ibrox" in a newspaper headline is extremely irresponsible.

Neil Lennon, his coaching staff and the Celtic players are very disappointed at this reporting and have jointly decided that they will not be co-operating with journalists from The Daily Record.

It is only right that the newspaper delivers a suitable retraction and apology.

Neil Lennon as always will continue to receive the full support of everyone at the Club."
