Statement From The Green Brigade

Green Brigade Response To Campbell Corrigan

Over the past few days, Strathclyde Police have orchestrated a media campaign to tarnish our group as bigots, as justification for their power-grabbing and the Scottish Government's new anti-Football Bill - a Bill that criminalises football fans and the Celtic support in particular. Realising they face a challenge from fans opposed to the Bill, the politicians and police need a scapegoat and they've decided that we fit the bill. Lurid headlines about our supposed 'songs of hate' have been followed up with a demand from Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan for us to meet him for a dressing-down - a demand made on the back page of a tabloid newspaper.

We have yet to be formally invited to meet Corrigan but we are happy to respond to his public offer with a public response, and to tell him in the firmest possible terms that we have no intention of meeting him and letting him wag his finger in our face. Corrigan's police force have spent hugely disproportionate resources on policing and gathering intelligence on the Celtic support, and ourselves in particular, including constant video surveillance at matches and a range of petty harassment.

Out of concern with the policing of football fans and the Offensive Behaviour at Football Bill we, alongside the other established Celtic fan organisations, formed Fans Against Criminalisation. On October 29th, we held a peaceful and very successful demonstration in George Square to oppose the SNP's anti-Football Bill. In what seems like a direct response, Corrigan's police force have since acted against us and the Celtic support. At the match v Hibs that afternoon the police, with no regard for fan safety, waded into our section of the ground in an attempt to make arrests of unknown fans. Match commander Eddie Smith then made a complaint to the SPL about offensive chants and after the subsequent match with Rennes in the Europa League he made a similar complaint to UEFA. Such a complaint is unprecedented.

Following the demonstration and those two matches, several fans have been arrested. In a dawn raid on Friday, the police arrested a 17 year-old boy for a breach of the peace. He has no previous convictions but despite this, he was remanded in custody for 7 weeks on Monday morning, for singing a song that Alex Salmond, Campbell Corrigan and co don't like. Earlier that morning a man accused of attempted murder was granted bail. The young fan was released last night after the intervention of the Lord Advocate. The Lord Advocate, one of the Bill's main cheerleaders, must have realised the potential political damage such a case, illustrating the Crown's attack on fans, would have had on the Bill.

Campbell Corrigan has today been on radio shows, further scapegoating our group. We note that he is also insisting that he will be meeting Celtic fan organisations to tell us all how to behave. After the police's attack on Celtic fans following the Fans Against Criminalisation demonstration, two Celtic fan organisations asked them for a meeting to discuss their behaviour. The match commander Eddie Smith refused to meet them and his superior, Wayne Mawson, refused to speak of the events of that day. Rather than giving Campbell Corrigan free reign to scapegoat our group for his own ends, perhaps the media should be questioning him on his own force's political policing.

Celtic support for White Ribbon Campaign

By: Paul Cuddihy on 05 Dec, 2011

CELTIC are supporting the White Ribbon Scotland Campaign during the 16 Days of Action to End Violence Against Women.

And at Sunday’s SPL game at Tannadice, both Celtic and Dundee United players wore the white ribbon on their shirts in support of this important campaign.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said, “Everyone at the Club is glad to be supporting this campaign during the 16 Days of Action. There is no place in our society for violence against women and we are glad to be taking this opportunity to speak out against those that treat women in an abusive manner.”

The White Ribbon stands as a symbol of opposition to violence against women. Wearing a White Ribbon signifies a commitment to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global campaign, which involves men in working to end violence against women.

The aim of the campaign, which began on Friday, November 25, is to involve men in working to end violence against women and in raising public awareness of the issue.

Men and women can show their support for the campaign by visiting
www.whiteribbonscotland.org.uk and take the pledge ‘not to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.’

Campaign co-ordinator Callum Hendry said: “We are delighted to see a club like Celtic Football Club take this public stance towards violence against women.

“As clubs take leadership in speaking out about this issue the message will ripple down to the supporters. We need men to act as positive role models for younger fans and to challenge peers who display negative attitudes and behaviour towards women.

“We then stand a chance of reducing the number of incidents of violence by preventing it from occurring in the first place.”

The 16 Days of Action Against Gender Violence is running from November 25 – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women - to this Saturday, December 10 - International Human Rights Day.

Those days symbolically link violence against women to human rights, to emphasise that it is a human rights abuse to commit violence against women.

[h=2]Celtic Football Club statement[/h] By: Newsroom Staff on 06 Dec, 2011

IT has been reported today by a number of news organisations that Celtic has been ‘cleared’ or has ‘escaped punishment’ for ‘sectarian chanting’.

While the Club accepts that the SPL had looked at an issue concerning unacceptable conduct, at no time has Celtic been investigated by the SPL or any other body for sectarian chanting.

Clearly, it is important that this matter is clarified. Celtic will be contacting the organisations in question to ensure that such reporting is corrected.

[h=1]Reamonn Gormley murder: judge's statement in full[/h] Lady Dorrian sentencing statement on Daryn Maxwell and Barry Smith over the death of Reamonn Gormley

Daryn Maxwell

Sentenced to life imprisonment after he pled guilty to the murder of Reamonn Gormley. The punishment part was set at 19 years.
Judge Lady Dorrian said: “This was a random and unprovoked attack on a member of the public for the purpose of committing robbery. The deceased was struck three times with a knife. One of those blows cut the carotid artery and caused him to bleed to death.
"Previous convictions show that your lifestyle is one in which violence is habitual. You have been convicted on indictment for assault to severe injury no fewer than three times. You had been on interim liberation from the last of these for a matter of only a few weeks.
"The only sentence I can pass is one of life imprisonment but in doing so I must fix the punishment part, which is the period of time which must elapse before you are entitled to have your case remitted to the parole board.
In doing so I have taken account of the circumstances of the offence, the fact that you were on bail and your previous record, as well as the factors advanced in mitigation. I recognise that you have had a challenging upbringing and that you are sorry for what you have done but this remains a most serious offence, committed by someone with a predisposition to violence.
In the circumstances had it not been for the plea, the punishment part would have been 20 years. There was in my view some residual utility in the plea even although it was tendered at the very last minute and so I will reduce that period to one of 19 years. I will backdate the sentence to 7th February 2011.

Barry Smith

Given an extended sentence of eight years and three months for culpable homicide.
Lady Dorrian said: "You also participated in the incident in which Reamonn Gormley met his death. In your case you have pled guilty to culpable homicide on the basis that you were part of a pre-arranged plan with the first accused to commit robbery with the use of a lethal weapon and with the knowledge that the execution of that plan carried with it a serious risk of injury. The use of the weapon by Maxwell was responsible for the death, but you also share that responsibility, albeit to a lesser degree. As part of the plan to commit robbery you took with you a chisel and along with Maxwell you confronted the deceased and his friend. I recognise that you did not directly inflict any violence. Your responsibility may lie in a lesser degree, and your previous convictions may be fewer and less serious than those of Maxwell.
"Nevertheless the crime of culpable homicide remains a very serious one. You too had been released on bail shortly before this incident, in your case on 17th December 2010. I am satisfied from the terms of the Social Enquiry Report that in your case an extended sentence for the protection of the public would be appropriate.
"In sentencing you however, I have to reflect that your culpability is not that of your co-accused and that you did not personally inflict any injury. Had it not been for the plea the sentence would have been one of 9 years detention. There was, as I have remarked, a residual utility in the plea, even at the late stage when it was taken. I appreciate that until the position of the first accused was clarified no negotiations regarding your position could take place, but nevertheless no formal steps were taken to initiate such discussion. In all the circumstances the sentence will be reduced to 8years and 3 months. The extension period will be 4 years.
The sentence will be backdated to 7th February 2011."

Watch your backs in prison you two scumbags!

Remembering Phil O'Donnell
[/h]

By: Paul Cuddihy on 29 Dec, 2011 10:27

TODAY, Thursday, December 29, marks the fourth anniversary of Phil O’Donnell´s tragic and untimely death at the age of just 35.

The midfielder was captaining Motherwell during their match with Dundee United at Fir Park in 2007 when he collapsed on the pitch and died. His death sparked a huge outpouring of grief among the whole of Scottish football.

At the end of the 2007/08 season, over 60,000 supporters turned out at Celtic Park for a tribute match between the Celtic team that ‘stopped-the-10’ and the Motherwell side which lifted the Scottish Cup in 1991.

Phil, of course, made a significant contribution to those successes at both clubs.

He began his playing career with Motherwell, and at the age of just 19, he helped the club win the Scottish Cup in 1991, scoring in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Dundee United in the final at Hampden.

In September 1994, Tommy Burns signed Phil for Celtic, and at the time he was the club’s record signing. And he got off to a great start with the Hoops, scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory over Partick Thistle at Firhill on September 10.

He went on to lift the Scottish Cup with Celtic at the end of that season as Tommy Burns’ side beat Airdrie 1-0 in the final. And he was also an important part of the squad when Celtic ‘stopped the 10’ in 1998, winning their first league title in a decade.

During five years at Celtic between 1994-99, Phil made a total of 121 games for Celtic, scoring 20 goals.

From Celtic, he moved south to Sheffield Wednesday, remaining there until 2003. After returning to Scotland, he rejoined Motherwell in 2004, and was an important part of the team over the next three years as captain of the club.

His sad and untimely death at the age of just 35 robbed football of a fine player and a great role model.

Much more importantly, it robbed a family of a loving husband and father, and our thoughts and prayers remain, as always, with his wife Eileen and their four children.

Mikael Lustig delighted to finally be a Celt

By: Laura Brannan on 30 Dec, 2011

MIKAEL Lustig watched his new club storm to the top of the SPL from the stands on Wednesday night, but after signing a pre-contract with Celtic in October, it was finally his turn to pull the Hoops on.

The Swedish right-back was officially unveiled as the Hoops’ newest addition at Lennoxtown this morning, (Friday), after completing his move from Norwegian side, Rosenborg.

And the 25-year old is delighted to have the deal completed so he can continue the strong connection Celtic already have with his country.

“I have been waiting for this moment for two months now and it feels really good to finally be here,” he said, facing the Scottish press for the first time. “I first heard Celtic were interested in me a year and a half ago so I watched a lot of their games and it always felt like a good club for me.

“Henrik Larsson put Celtic on to the map in Sweden so I had already seen many of their games and there are many fans who already cheer them on. I didn’t speak to him about my move but I’ve heard him say a lot of good things about the club and Glasgow.

“I talked to Daniel (Majstorovic) a little bit before I signed for the club, though, and he really enjoys it here with the fans and in this city. He was very positive and told me to be myself, play my game and don’t be ashamed – just to go for it.”

Lustig comes into the squad while they are high in confidence on the back of nine consecutive league victories. But the recent form of Cha Du Ri and Adam Matthews, along with Mark Wilson´s expected return to training next week, the new Bhoy knows it will be difficult to work his way into the starting XI.

The demand for places excites him, however, and he is looking forward to the challenge which lies ahead.

“If I am needed at centre-back then I can play there but I am a right-back and that’s where I want to play,” he said. “I am quite an offensive player. I want to score goals and make good passes and I think the way Celtic play will suit me well.

“It will probably be difficult for me to get into the starting line-up but I hope it is because then it means we have good players here. We want to go to the Champions League and win the title, and if you want that it is going to be hard to get into the team.

“I come from Rosenborg, in Norway, and it’s like Celtic where there is pressure in every game. We wanted to win the league every day there and it’s going to be the same here.”

The defender enjoyed his first experience at Celtic Park midweek when he watched his new team-mates beat Rangers 1-0. But despite looking forward to playing in a similar atmosphere himself, he will have to be patient.

“It was the first derby I had seen live and the atmosphere was really good,” Lustig said. “I heard the derby is something special and I agree, it was really nice. I was sitting in the audience with a smile.

“I had a really long season in Norway, though, so in December I have taken it easy and it will be a few weeks before I will be ready to play.”
