Stokes hat-trick sees Celtic progress in cup
[/h]

08 Jan, 2012

Scottish Cup Fourth Round
Balmoor Stadium, Peterhead.
Sunday, January 8, 2012

PETERHEAD…0

CELTIC…3
Stokes 36, 57, 82

ANTHONY Stokes struck a hat-trick as Celtic booked their place in the Scottish Cup fifth round with a dominant 3-0 victory over Peterhead.

The Irishman swept home his first in the 36th minute from Georgios Samaras’ pass and he completed his three-goal haul with two well-taken goals after the break.

Once the striker had put the Hoops ahead, there was never any doubt about the outcome of the contest. While the Third Division outfit offered spirited resistance, Celtic’s dominance was absolute and they headed back down to Glasgow satisfied after making a convincing start to their defence of the trophy.

Despite making six changes to the team which beat Dunfermline 3-0, Neil Lennon still selected a strong Celtic side for the clash with Peterhead.

Among the alterations, Lukasz Zaluska made his fifth start of the season between the sticks, with Emilio Izaguirre and Kelvin Wilson also handed a place the starting XI as they continued their comeback from long-term injury.

This was the first time Celtic had faced Peterhead in a competitive match and the hosts were certainly fired-up for the occasion. The opening 15 minutes were typical of a cup tie at a lower league ground – frenetic, physical and fast-paced.

Accordingly, time on the ball and chances were at a premium in the early stages. However, Celtic gradually began to grow in ascendancy once the pace eased.

Just past the quarter hour mark, Stokes had two sights of goal in quick succession, after being released by Georgios Samaras on the inside-right channel. However, home keeper, Paul Jarvie and a defender’s outstretched leg denied him on both occasions.

In the 27th minute, Stokes passed up an even better opportunity after Cha picked him out after reaching the byline, the Irishman firing over from an acute angle.

A clever corner from Mulgrew found Ki lin space on the edge of the box and his ferocious drive cannoned up off the bar as the Hoops upped the pressure.

It was one was one-way traffic now. Stokes’ driven cutback was too powerful for Joe Ledley to react to and Jarvie made a smart stop from Charlie Mulgrew’s goalbound free-kick.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 36th minute. Fastening on to a long raking pass, Samaras bore down on goal but unselfishly picked out Stokes in space and the striker swept the ball home.

The Hoops hitman was proving a real thorn in the home rearguard and an audacious chip spun narrowly over the bar. He then had another strike ruled out for offside, after connecting with Samaras’ cross.

Celtic continued to control proceedings after the restart and Stokes bagged his second in the 57th minute. Izaguirre was involved in the move, before the ball was worked to the striker inside the area and he sent an accurate finish into the far corner.

Shortly after, Stokes had two opportunities to grab his hat-trick but Jarvie was equal to his first effort and he then shot wide. In the meantime, Ledley was forced to leave the fray, hurting his head in an aerial clash, with Victor Wanyama replacing him.

Blue Toon boss, Jim McInally also altered his personnel but it failed to diminish the Hoops’ dominance, with Zaluska a virtual spectator.

With Celtic in complete control, Filip Twardzik was handed his competitive debut and the Czech teenager swiftly showed his confidence by shooting over from distance. And Brown nearly added a third, his deflected drive giving Jarvie a cause for concern before going over.

The biggest concern for the visitors was when one of the floodlights momentarily failed but there was enough light for the match to continue and Stokes to grab his hat-trick.

Dylan McGeouch had just arrived on the pitch as a substitute when he embarked on mazy run towards the byline. His cutback was eventually worked out to Stokes on the right and he beat Jarvie with the aid of a deflection to claim the match ball.

Celtic's double award delight

By: Paul Cuddihy on 13 Jan, 2012

IT was a double delight for Celtic today as Neil Lennon was named Clydesdale Bank SPL Manager of the Month for December, while Victor Wanyama was named Young Player of the Month.

It’s recognition of the exceptional form that the Irishman’s team have produced, with 10 consecutive league wins in a row.

This included, during the month of December, away wins over Dundee United (1-0) and St Johnstone (2-0), and home victories over Hearts (1-0), Kilmarnock (2-1) and Rangers (1-0).

That victory in the derby match not only preserved Celtic’s winning run, but it also put the Hoops top of the SPL table, having transformed a 15-point deficit at the beginning of November into a two-point lead going into 2012.

The team have continued their good form into the new year, with a 3-0 league win over Dunfermline and a Scottish Cup victory over Peterhead by the same scoreline.

And Neil Lennon is understandably pleased with the way his team are performing.

“The award is just a testament to the team really and the consistency they’ve shown in what was a big month for us, and obviously so is January,” he said.

“We´ve started it well but we have a difficult game tomorrow. Dundee United are a very dangerous team and we just have to keep our focus now.”

And Victor Wanyama was also a deserving recipient of the Young Player of the Month Award for December.

The Kenyan internationalist has been a star performer for Celtic this season, whether in midfield or at central defence, and he scored his first goal for the Hoops in the 1-0 win against Hearts last month.

He said: “I think I’ve been doing well and I’m happy for my team-mates as they have helped me to get better and I’m looking forward to becoming a better player, too.

“They (team-mates) were very happy for me, and told me I was doing very well.”

And the Clydesdale Bank SPL Player of the Month Award went to former Celt, Paul McGowan, for his impressive displays for St Mirren, which included the winning goal against Rangers on Christmas Eve.

Hooper: I'm happy at Celtic

By: Mark Henderson on 16 Jan, 2012

GARY Hooper has reiterated his desire to remain at Celtic and help deliver the club success over the remainder of the campaign. Speculation has mounted of big-money bids being tabled for the prolific striker during the January transfer window.

But the Englishman, who made a goalscoring return to the team on Saturday following a groin injury, insists he’s happy in Paradise and firmly focused on football matters.

Speaking exclusively the official Celtic website, Hooper said: “I’m very happy. I’m back playing now and scored at the weekend. It was good to be back in the team.

“I don’t want to go anywhere. I’m a Celtic player and very happy here, winning games for Celtic and we’re two points clear at the top of the league just now. I’m just focusing on football - training, playing and scoring goals – that’s my job.

Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Dundee United at the weekend was their 11th successive SPL win, preserving their position at the league summit.

However, the 23-year-old stressed that no-one among the squad was looking further ahead than their next fixture.

“We have to take it game by game,” he said. “Our aim is to win every game and perform like we did in the first half and parts of the second half on Saturday. I think we’re performing well and scoring goals, so it’s looking good."

Hooper plundered his 16th goal of the season against the Terrors with a typical clinical finish following good supply work from Anthony Stokes. That strike put him one ahead of the Irishman in their duel to finish top of the goalscoring charts.

Although that raised a smile from Hooper, collective success remains his overriding priority.

“I’m back in front by one, but we're both here to score goals, and the main thing is winning games,” said the Hoops hitman. “I’m enjoying my football,” he added. “I had a little groin strain, but I’m back playing and Stokesy and I are linking up well.

“He set me up at the weekend, and Victor had a great header as well, and we got the three points which is always the main thing.”

Celtic sign Jaroslaw Fojut
[/h]

By: Newsroom Staff on 17 Jan, 2012

CELTIC are delighted to announce the signing of Jaroslaw Fojut from Polish league-leaders, Slask Wroclaw, on a pre-contract agreement.

The highly-rated defender has penned a three-year deal with the club which will commence this summer.

Having represented his country at Under-20 level, the 24-year-old has been on the verge of full international honours in recent months.

The stopper spent his youth career with several clubs in his homeland, before joining Bolton in 2004. He moved to Slask Wroclaw five years later and has been instrumental in their rise to summit of the Polish top flight this season.

Neil Lennon revealed that Fojut was someone he’d been tracking for a long time and was delighted to acquire his services.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, the manager said: “I actually played against him when he was on loan at Luton for Nottingham Forest and often wondered what happened to him, as he was on loan from Bolton at the time and I was really impressed by him.

“So John Park and myself got talking, and his name came up again. We did a bit of homework on him since then, and I think he’s been in excellent form for his club this year and on the verge of international recognition. To get him on a pre-contract is a good bit of business again for the club.

“He’s strong, technically good, quick, and he’s very good in the air. At 24, he’s at a good age. He had a bad injury and was out of football for around a year but it looks like he’s come back stronger than ever, and I’m pleased with the signing.

“I think his all-round game is very good. He has been playing at a decent level of football from a young age but what I like about him is his physical qualities. He already knows the British game, so I don’t think it will take him too long to adapt to the rigours of Scottish football."

Celtic sign Rabiu Ibrahim

By: Laura Brannan on 18 Jan, 2012 17:39

CELTIC are delighted to announce the signing of Rabiu Ibrahim, subject to the successful completion of a work permit application which will be heard early next week.

The former PSV attacking midfielder will join the club on a three and a half year deal after impressing Neil Lennon on a recent trial.

The 20-year-old Nigerian is a highly rated playmaker and made an impact in a bounce match against St Johnstone at the start of the year when he played 60 minutes of the 3-2 victory.

The Celtic manager is delighted to have secured the deal. He exclusively told the official website: “We have been very impressed by Rabiu. In my view he is a highly talented and exciting young player and someone who will be a tremendous addition to our squad.

“He is a playmaker, well balanced and a very intelligent footballer. We are really looking forward to him joining us.”

Delight as Pawel Brozek joins Celtic

By: Mark Henderson on 30 Jan, 2012

CELTIC are delighted to confirm that Polish internationalist Pawel Brozek has joined the club on loan from Trabzonspor until the end of the season, with Celtic having the option to make the move a permanent one.

The 28-year-old striker is another top-quality addition to Neil Lennon´s squad during this transfer window and will provide additional fire-power to the Hoops.

Pawel´s fellow countryman, Jaroslaw Fojut has signed a pre-contract agreement with the club and will move to Celtic Park in the summer, while Swedish internationalist Mikael Lustig and highly-rated Nigerian playmaker, Rabiu Ibrahim are already part of the first-team squad.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website after completing his move to the Hoops, Pawel said: "I’m very happy because Celtic were very determined to sign me and it didn’t take a long time. I spoke with Lukasz Zaluska and Maciej Zurawski and they said only positive things about the club. So when I heard there was an offer from Celtic I wanted to go straight away.

“They said the fans are fantastic here, the top organisation of the club, and the great name the club has in the world. It’s all happened very quickly. It was a really nice surprise because it’s a big club and a big name in Europe.

"It’s a very nice city and a great place to play football. And there is a very good manager and coach. The team is very good and there are excellent training facilities.

“I knew before I signed about the club’s history, and the kind of pressure to win every game and the championship, so the history, the fans and the team and the determination of the club to bring me here were all reasons why I came.

“It’s also important that we have won so many games in the last couple of months and there are also plenty of chances to score. But I don’t like to speak about myself. I would rather show what I can do on the park and will try to do the best I can for the club."

The Polish internationalist will be officially unveiled at a media conference tomorrow.

Samaras opened the scoring for Celtic in the 33rd minute

By Martin Conaghan BBC Scotland

Celtic progressed to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable win away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

An angled strike from Georgios Samaras opened the scoring in the 33rd minute.

David Proctor brought down Gary Hooper inside the Inverness penalty area with 67 minutes played and Celtic captain Scott Brown converted from the spot.

Inverness substitute Claude Gnakpa fired in a hopeful effort in the dying minutes that drifted over the bar.

The win is Celtic's third against Inverness in the Scottish Cup, with the Highland side having won two of the previous encounters.

Caley boss Terry Butcher replaced goalkeeper Ryan Esson with Jonny Tuffey and brought in midfielder Graeme Shinnie for Shane Sutherland.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon made four changes with Adam Matthews, Kelvin Wilson and Samaras in - along with a rare start for Kris Commons - while Cha Du-ri and Emilio Izaguirre were dropped and James Forrest and Anthony Stokes started on the bench.

Some hearty challenges in the opening stages gave way to a half-chance for Hooper in the sixth minute when he controlled a long ball in the Inverness penalty area but couldn't find a way through towards goal under pressure.

The first real chance of the match fell to Nick Ross on the edge of the Celtic penalty area in the 24th minute when he fired low towards the bottom left, but keeper Fraser Forster was at full stretch to turn it around the post.

Moments later, Commons was presented with a golden opportunity when Hooper fed through a pass inside the Inverness penalty area, but the Scotland international mis-timed his shot and stumbled over the ball.

A low shot from Hooper as the half-hour mark approached was smothered by Tuffey, before Samaras thundered an swerving drive high past the Northern Irishman to put the visitors into the lead.

Ross Tokely almost caused a second goal when he fumbled a back-pass that Hooper intercepted, but Tuffey was on-hand to clear the danger.

A poor free-kick from Greg Tansey sailed over the Celtic bar as half-time approached, then a Tokely header failed to find the target from a Jonny Hayes corner.

Shortly after the restart, Samaras forced a corner after a powering run down the right-hand side, but Tansey headed clear and Charlie Mulgrew's cross on the rebound was deflected wide.

Moments later, Samaras and Joe Ledley rushed for the same ball on the six-yard line and a chance to double the lead went over the Inverness crossbar.

The big Greece striker was inches shy of his second of the day as the hour-mark approached, stretching to reach a Ledley pass on the six-yard line that bobbled across the face of goal.

Andrew Shinnie tried with an effort from distance that was deflected out for a corner during a decent spell of pressure for the hosts.

In the 67th minute, Proctor brought down Hooper inside the penalty area with a clumsy challenge from behind and referee Murray immediately pointed to the spot. Brown stepped up and sent keeper Tuffey the wrong way to extend Celtic's lead.

Forster's complacency with a clearance was almost punished by Richie Foran, but the big Englishman recovered to keep his pride intact, then substitute Forrest sprinted through the Inverness defence and fired in a shot that failed to find the back of the net.

With five minutes remaining, Inverness began to to look tired as the visitors pressed for a third.

Gnakpa's long-range injury-time effort sailed wildly over the bar and Anthony Stokes made a late appearance in place of Hooper, but further firepower up front was unrequired as Celtic eased through to the last eight.

Why Ra**ers should not be saved

We are starting to witness the end of Rangers FC and the beginning of a campaign by the media and football bodies in Scotland to allow a new company to immediately join the SPL in the event that Rangers go into liquidation.

The argument seems to be that every other club would loose money and our TV deal with various companies would die. I beg to differ. With the collapse of this poor TV deal the other SPL clubs could either form SPL TV or allow clubs to sell their TV and other broadcast rights individually. This is a new communications era so there are plenty of outlets available to get your product out there and for it to generate better money than clubs are already earning. It just requires a bit of imagination and reorganisation.
This could actually bring about a renaissance in Scottish football. If we get the media deals right and clubs adopt sustainable business models which will have to rely heavily on growing our own youth players then the future is bright. This can all be achieved without Rangers being part of the SPL for a few years. I’ve nothing against a new Rangers forming and working their way through the leagues and returning to the SPL. I think it is really important to the integrity of Scottish football that things pan out this way if Rangers do become extinct.
I also so see it as a benefit to Scottish society as a whole if this current Rangers go to the wall. Below is a list of what RFC have brought to Scottish football and Scottish society in general. Some of the points may seem harsh but they are sadly fact.

This is a club that have gave Scottish football the following:

  • Operating a sectarian signing policy for most of their existence.
  • No Apology to the RC community in Scotland for that policy.
  • Alleged Financial doping.
  • Alleged Tax scams.
  • Causing the near collapse of Scottish football by spending money they did not have and forcing other clubs into the same situation.
  • A support that is a constant embarrassment when travelling outside Scotland.
  • Campaigns of hatred and terror by their fans which could have ended in maiming or loss of life.
  • Acting like a Unionist political institution rather than a football club.
As I said harsh but true. Now here are the positives if this club go to the wall and return to division 3.

  • An major blow to sectarianism in Scottish football
  • Bigger pool of young players available to clubs
  • A chance to properly re-evaluate business models in Scottish football including: Tighter financial controls to help clubs become sustainable, More scrutiny of transfer spending as a proportion to turnover, Limits on debt as a proportion of turnover.
  • More sustainable youth development.
  • Better chances of smaller clubs to play in Europe
  • Other SPL clubs will have a chance to earn more money by finishing further up the league
  • Higher attendances for other clubs
  • The end of the Old Firm tag
  • A new start for Scottish football with no sectarian element or agenda
  • A far more competitive SPL
  • A boost to the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] division (joke)
So over the next few months you will be fed a line by the Scottish media and footballing bodies that catastrophe awaits us all if Rangers die and a Rangers New co are not allowed into the SPL at the expense of a first division club. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s the only way to go. We urge Celtic fans who believe their is a better way forward to engage with other SPL fans and ask them to consider the merits of SPL life without RFC. If they feel that it is better for the long term that a Rangers new co should start from the bottom division they should put pressure on their boards not to allow a new company into the SPL.
