Build up To Thursday`s Game

Mcgeady: We want three points against Hamburg

NO more slip-ups. That’s Aiden McGeady’s message to his Celtic team-mates as the Hoops look to get their UEFA Europa League campaign back on track against Hamburg next Thursday.

Having lost to Hapoel Tel-Aviv and drawn with Rapid Vienna, Tony Mowbray’s men need a win against the Germans to stay in touch with the leaders of Group C.

Currently riding high in the Bundesliga, Hamburg are ranked amongst the tournament favourites but McGeady is looking for three points at Celtic Park.

"It’s a must-win game,” McGeady told the Celtic View. “There is just no other way to describe it. Drawing to Rapid was a sore one and it makes these Hamburg games even more important.

“Rapid are quite a strange team, because to look at them player-by-player you start to wonder how they beat Aston Villa and Hamburg. But then we saw first-hand how well-organised and dangerous they can be.

“They were hard to break down and sat behind the ball, but the Hamburg games will be a lot different. They will be a lot more attacking and we should see two teams going at it in both games.

“Ideally, we would have beaten Rapid and every team would be on three points after two games. That’s not the case and we really need to take something from the Hamburg games.”

Frustration as Celtic draw with Motherwell

CELTIC returned from the international break with a disappointing 0-0 home draw with Motherwell. It was a familiar story, with Celtic creating the vast majority of the chances but failing to find the back of the net, with the draw seeing the team slip from pole position at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Tony Mowbray made a number of changes on this return to league duty, with Glenn Loovens, Shaun Maloney, Landry NGuemo and Zheng Zhi all out of the starting XI.

That meant Stephen McManus partnered Gary Caldwell in the centre of defence, with the biggest changes in midfield, where Barry Robson and Niall McGinn were in alongside Scott Brown and Aiden McGeady. Georgios Samaras also returned to partner Scott McDonald up front.

In a disjointed and frustrating first half Celtic had the best of the chances, a shot from McGeady that sailed past the post and an attempt from Samaras that went the same direction, all in the space of a minute.

Then, around the half-hour mark, the busy McGinn had a decent attempt which was followed up by a McGeady cross which goalkeeper, John Ruddy, did well to punch clear.

Motherwell deserved credit for their determination to play the ball out from the back and patiently keep possession, while the pacey Chris Humphreys presented a threat on the right flank.

It was his shot from the edge of the box that on-loan Everton striker, Lucas Jutkiewicz almost succeeded in deflecting past Artur Boruc, although the Celtic keeper was quick to recover.

However, this was their best chance in a first half that was brought to a close by a glorious chance for McGinn. The winger was picked out by a Samaras cross to the back post, which dropped over the shoulder of the defender, but he could only send his header wide.

The second half started slowly but there was a burst for Celtic after 1 0minutes when Brown was fouled by Giles Coke and went head to head with the Motherwell man. Moments later the Celtic midfielder was nearly through on goal, with McGinn following up with a shot that was saved by Ruddy.

But Motherwell were now growing in confidence and beginning to pen Celtic back and cause the occasional problem, with Boruc doing well to get down and turn away a shot from Jutkiewicz. Five minutes later the striker fired in another attempt that was deflected wide for a corner.

The introduction of Paddy McCourt, Shaun Maloney and Zheng Zhi did inspire some fresh purpose in the closing 15 minutes of the match, with McDonald and Lee Naylor both off target with half-decent attempts. McCourt then forced a double save from Ruddy with five minutes to go.

It was all Celtic as the final whistle approached and Ruddy again did well to get down to a McGeady shot and also parry a cutback from McCourt after a jinking run across the byline.

A succession of corners were won and the supporters were on their feet, urging Celtic on. Then, two minutes into injury time, McDonald sent a free header from a Naylor cross spinning over, before McGeady headed a great chance wide of the post. It was a frustrating end to a disappointing afternoon at Celtic Park.

I'll even forgive him for playing for u*&ted

Swedish striker Henrik Larsson has announced he will end his playing career after Helsingborg's first division match against Elfsborg on November 1.

The 38-year-old, who enjoyed club success with Feyenoord, Celtic, Barcelona and had a short stint at Manchester United on loan, made his 106th and last appearance for Sweden in a 1-0 loss to Denmark on October 10 in a World Cup qualifier.

"I know now that I am 100 percent sure about my decision to stop," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

"I am 38 now and that's enough.

"I will think over what I will do next. Most of all I need some time to adjust to life after football."

Larsson won a Champions League medal with Barcelona in 2006 and was part of the Swedish team that finished third at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Larsson also won the Golden Boot in 2001 as Europe's top club scorer.

Strachan defends squad

Strachan defends Celtic squad strength
Wednesday, 28 October 2009

Gordon Strachan has defended the quality of players he left Tony Mowbray at Celtic.

Hoops boss Mowbray has recently criticised the squad he inherited from Strachan, threatening an overhaul in the January transfer window.

But new Middlesbrough manager Strachan has expressed surprise at his successors claims, telling the Daily Record: 'Yes, I'm surprised because there are some terrific players at that football club.

'I don't want to comment on what Tony might have said but I will say this - I used to go to training and think to myself, "I love watching this".

'I loved watching some of these boys playing the game. I loved the boys with technical ability - the McGeadys, Maloneys, Nakamuras and Browns. I was so lucky to have so many good players to work with over my time there.

'In fact, I would set up the training sessions knowing fine well I couldn't wait to watch it or coach it.

'It was a pleasure to be on the same training pitch as these guys.
"I'm telling you - these are good players and good men.'

I have to agree with Strachan on that one :)

Celtic bow out of league cup

HOLDERS Celtic exited the Co-operative Insurance League Cup after Michael Stewart’s second-half penalty gave Hearts a 1-0 win at Celtic Park.

After an uninspiring first half, Celtic had by far the better of the second half but were beaten by Stewart’s spot-kick – awarded after Danny Fox brought down Christian Nade.

The Hoops laid siege to the Hearts goal in the closing stages and substitute Georgios Samaras missed four chances, but the Jambos held on to make the semi-final and end Celtic’s defence of the trophy.

Tony Mowbray has made four changes to his starting XI from Sunday’s 2-1 win over Hamilton Accies. Out went Barry Robson, Scott McDonald, Lee Naylor and Samaras. In came Fox, Landry NGuemo, Marc Crosas and Chris Killen.

All four were looking to make an impact but it was Hearts who should have taken the lead inside 60 seconds. Nade was sent free on the right and he stepped past Gary Caldwell and poked a shot under Lukasz Zaluska – only for Andy Hinkel to clear off the line.

That was a let-off for Celtic, who soon settled into the game but chances were hard to come by. Crosas, Aiden McGeady and Zheng Zhi were seeing a lot of the ball but every time a cross was fired into the box, it was met by a Hearts defender.

Zheng, playing just off Killen in attack, was once again looking the part and he linked with Shaun Maloney in 25 minutes. The little winger raced into the box and checked back, but Janos Balogh saved his low shot.

Caldwell blocked Andy Driver’s shot as Hearts looked to make the most of a rare corner. Hearts central defender Ismael Bouzid came closer just moments later when he headed a David Obua cross inches wide.

Yet, it was the Hoops who finished the first half on top. Zheng volleyed wide from the edge of the box after running on to a Killen flick. Maloney and Killen were also thwarted after good work on the right from McGeady.

There was a touch of déjà vu to the start of the second half as Hearts again created a chance inside 60 seconds. A long ball sent Driver free and he touched the ball past Zaluska, but Hinkel again made the clearance.

Mowbray had made one change at the break – Paddy McCourt on for Maloney – and the Irishman almost grabbed another wonder goal in 51 minutes.

He twisted past Hearts full-back Craig Thomson on the halfway line and made a dart for goal, skipping past Bouzid and Obua before unleashing a shot off the bar.

That was a let-off for Hearts but minutes later they were celebrating as they took the lead from the spot just before the hour-mark. Fox was the man adjudged to have fouled Nade - replays showed he made no contact with the ball - and Stewart’s penalty squirmed under Zaluska.

Mowbray immediately threw on McDonald and Samaras, and the Greek had two great chances to level in 71 minutes. First, his low shot was blocked by Balogh and moments later his lob hit the base of the post as Hearts lived dangerously.

Yet, an even better chance came his way in 79 minutes. Hinkel made progress on the right and sent a cross on to his head – but Samaras missed the target from six yards.

Jose Goncalves was booked for a foul on McDonald as the game entered its closing stages. McGeady’s free-kick narrowly missed the target and moments before the end Samaras again passed up a great chance from Caldwell’s pass.

To compound Celtic’s agony, captain Stephen McManus was sent off in the closing stages for a crude challenge on Driver as Hearts made the last four.
