Premier League Discussion

The Premier League has scrapped the traditional Boxing Day calendar for the upcoming season after calls to reduce the workload of the top players.

Publication of the fixtures for the 2025-26 campaign did not include a single Boxing Day match, although that is certain to change once broadcasters make their selections before the festive period.

However, no side will be expected to play twice within a 48-hour period as has generally been the case, meaning that the established, packed Boxing Day list is gone.

A Premier League statement said: “In keeping with our commitment to providing a greater rest period over the Christmas and New Year period, no club will be requested to play less than 48 hours between match rounds 18 and 19 (December 27 and December 30). Matches in Round 18 (December 27) are available for movement to Boxing Day for live broadcast selection. Each club has a home match on either December 27 or January 3, with travel reduced on December 27 and December 30.”

The top managers have long complained about the demands in December and early January, which have been exacerbated by the revised European schedule

Sheffield United have sacked manager Chris Wilder following a review of last season when the team missed out on promotion to the Premier League in the play-off final.

An agreement is understood to be close for Ruben Selles to succeed Wilder at Bramall Lane following talks with the former Hull City manager.
