Covid-19 the second wave

The moderna vaccine, it is being reported, has similar efficacy to the Pfizer vaccine.

This is huge news as the moderna vaccine is much more stable. It also confirms that multiple companies have followed a path that is effective .

It can be stored at less extreme temperatures and is more easily transported.

Variety is going to be key as it means we will have not only multiple supply lines but also vaccines that can meet different needs. Some vaccines may offer short term efficacy but be easily stored, others the reverse. Production times might also vary.

It allows better targeting and makes it more likely 3rd world and developing countries will get access.

Third world countries need to be looked after also. They can't be left behind.

Vaccine should be available to ALL.

Let's hope there will be enough supply to meet the demand.

I don't think Thalidomide should be compared to any vaccine discovery!! Taking the conspiracy theory a bit too far!! Today's technology has come a long way since then!! Scaremongering at its best

Pfizer have said they can knock out 13 BILLION doses by the end of 2021.
More than enough for everyone on earth.
Although it's likely that old/at risk may need multiple doses

It's very likely now that will happen.

The us government deserves so much credit here.

The inclination amongst the public is that the gov should do something : get people together and plan.

Instead the us gov offered no money up front. Offered no eeall guidance or planning. But did offer juicey contracts for companies that could prove 50% efficacy.

It now appears we will, thanks to the selfish interest of private companies, have multiple vaccines online within a year of the outbreak.

Other thing to solve : storing and transporting vaccines that need to be stored at -70 or -120.

Guess what selfish companies looking to profit will solve this problem for us.

It's how gov should harness the power of markets and how selfish agents can produce the most needed of public goods.

Remarkable

Well then no need to panic for people lol.

The conspiracy theories are bugging me.

From them monitoring you and knowing everything about You if you take the vaccine.

Maybe I am wrong but aren't they doing all this already?

These private companies know it's big big bucks for them with bringing out a stable working vaccine and not half cooked one.

Profits it's the number 1 priority at the end of the day for them.

Nothing wrong with making a profit.
They may have to spend many hundreds of billions on dead ends before getting a SAFE working drug or vaccine.
Not sure Trump or any government needed to offer all kinds of riches, they can charge anything they like.
Trump did have a hand in the dexamethosone (sp) scandal. They were selling it at $10 a pop until it was discovered it was effective for C19, Trump told them to charge $3000 a dose, and each patient would need 10 doses.

and we should thank whoever we pray to that profit is the biggest motive for them

we should be thankful that all involved have at least some selfish motives.

fact is most of the 'good' created by a vaccine will not go to drug companies. airline companies will see, and have already seen, their share prices rocket, gyms, cinemas and hotels will see huge upsurge in profit. most of all the public. billions of people will gain. employment, lifestyle, stress and health.

in comparison, the drug companies will hoover up a tiny percentage off all the value - monetary and otherwise - that they have created. they will make billions. but they will have only captured a fraction of the value they created.

good on them. they deserve it.

actually, government involvement was likely necessary

drug companies do not capture all the value of their inventions - this means they are under-compensated and therefore under incentivised to look for a vaccine. furthermore the irrational way the public perceives price gouging [the raising of prices on needed goods when in short supply - see this forum when a corner shop charges 50p more for toilet roll] will have put doubts in their mind as to whether gov would simply cap prices. we do not want drug companies to be under-incentivised.

we solve this by granting patents that allow drug companies to extract value for a set amount of time.

this would be a disaster here, we do not want a price to be above what would be the competitive price - we want it to be below that. we do not want patents to limit entry.

by setting out guaranteed contracts that meant they could 100% create the delivery infrastructure. and guarantees on a relatively low [50%] efficacy rate and shortened testing phases meant companies could feel very safe in investing in a vaccine even if they were not confident on being first to the punch.

Not saying it's a bad thing them making a profit as they are doing all the work to make sure a safe and stable vaccine is available to the public so they will.obviously benefit from it as you would expect any organisation to do.

i'm saying it is a good thing they have made a profit.

they will have made a tiny amount compared to the amount of value they will have created.

this is true of any profit an individual or company makes.

greed is good

profit is good.

its why we are so prosperous and keen to serve each other.

there are farmers out there getting up at the crack of dawn to send food to our tables. i for one am glad they are doing it for money, because if they were doing it out of love for us, we would have empty plates.

viva capitalism baby!

Well that's obvious.

Capitalism is how the world works every day without it will collapse.

Whether you agree with how it's done or not just how things are.

I think the vaccine has been around a while.
They were waiting until Trump was definitely ousted before releasing the news.
If they'd released this news a month ago there would have been a good chance he could have got reelected.
He's widely viewed by other world leaders as a fecking lunatic and they were all shitting their knickers about him having another 4 years.
Nuclear war was definitely on the agenda and he had to go.
Judging by the response in here and other forums etc it seems hardly anyone is going to bother with the vaccine but I don't think it matters really
On the bright side, any vaccine probably not gonna work against the new Danish Mink mark II covid that will be doing the rounds if you believe the media :rage:

Its nowhere near as bad as the media say,
The Danes have it sorted pretty well, and the mink farms have been isolated since the beginning of March.

Can not stand needles myself so i will not be getting it.
Come on get some grown fella. Wait till you get older, they'll be sticking things in you far bigger than a needle. I can confirm this after my mandatory bowel scan.
In the famous words of Captain Kirk
"To boldy go were no man has been before"

Its not nice letting a KY fart out that shook the scanner and, in front of 4 women

Boris has to self isolate having been contacted by test & trace, as he's been in contact with an infected person.
In the week where we have to make a deal with Europe over Brexit.
And when he's just lost his two main advisors.
I guess someone else will have to sort it all out now.
Pure coincidence
No really :cautious:

Ye just seems too many coincidences in my book.

Dom the main guy of his dont really think he is truly gone, when they were showing him leaving seemed to staged as well.

boris is one of the worst PMs in my lifetime

utterly inept and devoid of backbone

hated by true blue conservatives, seen as a buffon by the redwall voters that lent him their vote to be decisive in delivering brexit.

his majority was his downfall in my opinion. he simply never needed to concede to either camp and ended up just trundling down the middle ground in his own inimical way.

pathetic

I think the other two jumped ship because Biden got voted in.
Trump would have given him a deal but that's gone.
The only thing to do now is back out of Brexit which is what they've been trying to do for the past four years.
Once these two knew it was dead in the water they both fecked off. Now Bojo got covid coming out the wazzoo he won't be able to do any negotiating

Lets be honest his plan was always to have a no deal brexit. He has no interests in making any deals.

But of course he will blame the pandemic for this.

Whether anyones likes it or not people voted for brexit (albeit on bunch of lies from bojo, farage and co) so needs to be delivered.

They really dont want to fekk over NI and Ireland either with what they are trying to do
