Need more detail JC

Has anything at all been done/changed that might have interfered with it?

Anything installed of updated? (no matter how trivial you might think it is)
What operating system?

Is the broadband connection wired or wireless?

What Firewall are you using?

problem solved, get rid of eircom !!!

Hi JC, don't worry about where you posted, it can be moved to a more appropriate section.

Will you fill in the missing Info from my earlier post?

You say the PC is fine but the Laptop won't connect, is that correct?

That would suggest that it may be being blocked by your security software or the connection could have been disabled?

Symantec (Norton. McAfee) are notorious for causing this issue.

Is the network connection showing as connected in the system tray? (blue little monitor icon beside the clock)

Run your sons Acer notebook in safe mode, select the network option, wait for it to load, and try and connect to any webpage. If the webpage loads without any errors then im guessing you could assume that its a firewall/antivirus issue.

You should try setting static IP's on your machines.

How to do that is posted in the PC section, I think it might be under the Remote Access VNC section.

sorry gman been looking round for that thread and i cant find it mate

Here's how to setup a Static IP:

First you will need to gather some information from your machine.

To get this information, follow the steps below.

Click on:

START
RUN
Type CMD into the box & hit OK
Type: ipconfig /all & hit enter. (Note: There is a space between ipconfig & the /all)

Write down the following information:

IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway:
DNS Servers:

(Note: There should be 2 DNS server entries 1 & 2. You will need to record both.) If the DNS Server numbers do not appear here? they can be found by going to the Admin page of your router & looking under the “STATUS” section. They are normally referred to as Primary & Secondary DNS.

You may also get your DNS Server numbers by calling you Provider & asking them for the information.

Now that you have gathered all the necessary information, you will need to know what you are going to use as your Static IP Address, so here’s how to determine it.

Most systems are within a Subnet of 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254 so you can set your static to anything in between these numbers provided it isn't being used by anything else. It would be a safe bet to run with

192.168.1.132
192.168.1.133
192.168.1.134
192.168.1.135 & so on

Okay, now you have determined what your static IP address is going to be, you have to set it up in Windows XP\Vista, so here’s what you need to do now.

Go to Network and Internet Connections (Control Panel)
networkconnectionsno6.jpg

Right click on the connection icon you use to connect to the internet.
Then click properties.
connectionicongr0.jpg

Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

Click on the “Use the following IP Address” radio button.
Now put the new static IP address into the IP Address box.

Put the subnet mask number (recorded earlier) into the subnet mask section.
Put the default gateway number (recorded earlier) into the Default Gateway box.
Enter the DNS servers (recorded earlier) into the two DNS Server boxes. Click okay all the way out of this menu.

Restart your system

Congratulations, you have successfully established a static IP address on your system.

ive just got a new pc with windows 7 and still got similar problems with net access. it comes up now and again that it cant find server etc and when i do a diagnosis it tell me there is a dns problem - a bit over my head that! would the above also solve my problem?
i was ok when i conected the new pc up but once i transfered over my settings files etc the serversand dns problem came back - so must be the settings i would guess.

ok so this is an old thread but ive done all of the above and it was fine for a while.
Sorry if ive hijacked this thread

Last night it all went down again. After trying to go over things i gave up but this morning it was all ok again but seems very slow. I keep getting the server not found or tellnig me im not connected.
My pc is the main pc in the house which rund both the cable modem and the router Belkin N router. I have gone on the site and it says not connected.
Im running windows 7 and when i go to network sharing centre i get my pc - network - internet. when i go to map i get my pc- belkin router - internet BUT when it goes off i get my pc - ? - Belkin router - internet. The ? i assume to be my modem - but for some reason that does not show up when its working ok. the ? is unidentified.
I have tried resetting the router and even taking it out and using jsut the modem - but the modem does not always seem to work on its own. Now when i bought the new pc i just unplugged all from old andplug into new and it worked fine. Then i transferred all mysettings over to new pc and this started happening.
So it must be a settings problem but im lost as to what to do. In the last day i have had problems and either pages just wont load or they do but are very slow or i cant get pictures n stuff up.

Any ideas please??
service provider told me they would have to come round and look at it as its a cable problem - i dont really want them round!

my friend had a similar problem and it turned out to be bad wiring coming into the house from ntls side, sounds like they may have to look afterall :( you might have to disconnect a few things lol

lol yh thats my thought - and thats gonna take a few hrs lol so will have to wait now til new year - we will just have to put up with things! Funny coz its been ok since we moved in 4 yrs ago. But could be that something has chewed cable outside of house - ive had trouble with fox's and squirrels!
