the router has good SNR and the box doesn't, you could try a signal booster but they're about £20 and it's not guaranteed to work in your case.
it could be a faulty tuner...is there any chance you could take it to someones house with VM and check it there?
Yeah I'll try it tomorrow at my sister's if it works there it's the signal at mine isn't it but if it still struggles then it's the box
 
yes, I've a feeling it could be the tuner, this box started life as H2s and had a cable tuner added later, maybe a soldered joint has come loose
 
Now that is a big job was the signal better when you first put the tuner in
It all worked perfectly for ages I didn't really pay attention to the signal because it worked lol and then just started playing up so I changed sub and it was ok for a while then started again so I got virgin to fit me to and broadband and still no good
