Not mine but often wonder what the chances of getting caught are?
Fairly good chance of getting caught I’d say. Those meters will be able to measure resistance across the L/N as a safety precaution (like earth monitoring) and putting anything in between will pretty much register 0 ohms.
All it would have to do is transmit this back via the smart meter and then you can expect a knock at the door.
 
I had an old gas meter and you could turn it upside down and it would stop the meter but can't do that with modern meters. Also the old electric meter you could attach a 12v charger lead to the body of the meter and that would slow the wheel down.
