Are we stuck with VPN use forever?

so in you guys opinion what's the best vpn performance/price wise?

i am looking for a vpn that will not crush my speed if possible, ive tried a few and they were not great

thanks

Agreed some routers can run a wireguard these days, speeds are much improved over OpenVPN protocols. Some of the older Asus router can run Wireguard via a script.

Express VPN is excellent however not as cheap as others.

Most VPNs still use the OpenVPN protocol but speeds can vary whereas with the new wiregard protocol it does seem much faster speeds overall and think read its more secure.

Not seen IPvanish or nord having wiregard protocol in the settings so dont think they support it..yet.

Personally I don't think it's so much the VPN you have, more the hardware you run it on.
I have surfshark running on a Linksys router and see no speed drop whatsoever

Ah I'm running windows 10 on an old laptop and a 4g router could that be the cause?

When it comes to VPN from a router CPU speed plays a big part the faster the better.

1 gig due core 60-80mb VPN speed
1.8 gig dual core 120-160 mb

Those are my findings with Nord the amout of memory your router has also plays a part.

It is better to put the VPN on the actual device you are using.

Nord has always been a speed killer for me.

Ye I think vpn on each individual device works best.

But for security on whole network can see why people have it on the router as then all traffic is encrypted.
