Speed changing due to light on ethernet port?

CK in all fairness m8, pablo, baz and source have given you great advice there, for the sake of 2 quid change your cable mate, it might work, New ethernet cables are far more productive now and also don't 4get if your computer is 10 years old, what are you expecting bud? But 1st thing 1st buy a cable its only 2 quid, even if it dont work it can't be anyworse so it's a win win

Also @channelking the longer the cable the worse speeds you will have, but its a non starter if your using adapters, they will destroy your speed, you will get dropouts if your using an ethernet adapter

The reason why I think he can't change the cable is I think he's plugged it into his neighbours router lol! He doesn't want to go round and tell them that their router is playing up lol that's literally the only explanation I can think off!
Ffs 🤣🤣 how far is the router away @channelking, give us a little bit more info bud

What I dont understand here is, @TheSource has asked on 2 separate occasions how far the hub is away from the pc and I've asked twice but no response yet you say to source "why do you keep going on about ethernet cable" you don't know what the problem is yourself so why would you say that CK? If your not going to give any information to help people understand the problem better then it's propz for the best you don't start a thread on it, all I can see is people have tried to help here but again it's you seem to not want to try what people are suggesting

And I'm telling you now if your using a 200 metre cable that's travelling from outside to inside and then into your router, you now know what your problem is, I've never heard of an ethernet cable having to travel from outside a home then back in and Into router.

this info may help:

Green LED

  • On = Connected with 100Mbps
  • Off = Connected with 10Mbps

Orange LED

  • On = Port is being connected, but no data is being transferred
  • Off = Port is being disconnected
  • Blinking = Data is being transferred

Hardware revision 2:
Green LED

  • On = Connected with 1000Mbps
  • Off = Connected with 100/10Mbps

Orange LED

  • On = Port is being connected, but no data is being transferred
  • Off = Port is being disconnected
  • Blinking = Data is being transferred
things may have changed this info from 2016

Thanks for all the advice.

Have brought my pc downstairs to check with a different cable same thing with speed.

Anyway will have cousin or one of my mates coming next week to look at it as they are experts with this stuff whereas when it comes to me I'm a thick stupid so and so.

If admins want to close the thread then no issue from me.

I have changed the cable on a different port on the router. Tried with a shorter new cables on the PC but I am still not maxing out my speed.

Spoke to the company that built my PC and they said its very unlikely the ethernet cable needs changing and could be more of a hardware issue. He did point out at the network ethernet card installed potentially being 10/100 only.

I have looked on CPUZ program but cant find the name of it to see what the speed limit is on it.

On device manager I have seen this "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" not sure if that is it. Motherboard model is h61m-USB3V but cant find the information regarding the ethernet card.

So it does seem the ethernet cable is fine and not faulty and doesnt really need changing. But actually the ethernet card likely is what is stopping the speed being maxed out. But issue I was told what even if I am able to change the card if it isnt soldered in the motherboard no guarantee regarding the speeds being maxed out as it will bottleneck as due the age of the PC.

I believe so mate

On CPUZ model states H61M-USB3V

IS the Realtek GbE LAN chip (10/100/1000 Mbit) for all types of this motherboard then? If so that would be connection speed wouldnt be capped at 100mb if the card support more than that.
No you should not be capped at 100mb but i would try updating to latest drivers

It is strange as the company was pretty certain the card was only a 10/100 and I was conviced of that also as to why the speeds were not maxing out due to this.

Been a long time since I did this but whats the best place to update drivers for the network card?

I may have been willing to get a new ethernet cable but if a shorter cable was giving the same results that seems really pointless.

I posted link to lan drivers post 69

Im guessing dont need to download all other drivers just drivers for "Realtek LAN Driver"?

Will download and install this see if makes any difference.
depends on what OS you are running last updates look like 2015 what I would do if you look on the lan drivers download page there is
Realtek Ethernet Diagnostic Utility download and run that then you could try updating drivers

Mines 8.1

Already downloaded the other one. But will download the utility and try updating drivers that way. Then will try running speeds tests and doing some tasks see whats what.

Im still surprised such an old motherboard supports up to 1000mb network card as speeds werent extremely high around 2013.

you are only thinking internet speeds not networking speeds like in a company moving data around from computer to computer.

I would do a full reflash and install Windows 10 your operating system is out of date so if you reflash with Windows 10 it will have all the latest updates for drivers (in theory)

It maybe out of date but I prefer 8.1 and it still gets frequent updates from Microsoft anyway.

I tried Windows 10 on the PC when they offered it originally for free but my PC couldnt handle or cope with it for some reason. Seemed really buggy and sluggish so had it reset and installed 8.1 again.

When your internet speeds drop on your PC have you tried another device to see if speeds drop on that also?

How do you know it's not just your ISP's peak times that's causing an issue. Hardwire another device in your house and as soon as you notice a speed drop on your PC try a speed test on another device and see if it's the same?

I would upgrade to Windows 10 regardless. 8.1 Was full of so many bugs. Running the latest OS especially Windows is better. I understand how you prefer 8.1 but I would try Windows 10 again. When Windows 10 first came out it was really buggy but now it's very stable!

Also your Mobo is coming up to nearly a decade old. Maybe it's time to invest in a new system anyway if you are begining to run into issues.

Other devices speed is fine on WiFi I have. But those I don't expect to max out as they are old as well.

I have tested my brothers laptop in the morning and afternoon and on that was getting close to 100mb but not long after it dropped to about 60mb.

I get peak times can be a factor. But this occurs any time peak time or not. Its been more of an issue last week or so on the pc.

Maybe so but 8.1 is still updated and have no major issues with the OS it self. I have tried Windows 10 and hate it. It's not for me at all. If 8.1 is no longer updated may look into it or whatever the new windows version is out then.

It's easier said that getting a new system. That is not an option for me. I am stuck with this pc even if it is really old.
