What's new

Anyone yet indirectly affected by the Corona outbreak?

I see, so it's fine to sacrifice 100,000 lives related to the lockdown to save 50,000 covid patients and destroy the economy as well?

How exactly are you sacrificing 100,000 lives if lockdown is ended? You mean they will be rabid dogs killing each other on the streets because they have no job.Bit dramatic mate.

Economy can come back to strong levels but will take quite some time. It won't happen over night.

Are you 100% certain if lockdown ends tomorrow 100,000 people don't die over time with a potential peak?

100K people will likely die if the lockdown stays in force indefinately.
New cases of cancer are down 70% on this time last year.
This doesn't mean people aren't getting it, it just means it's going undiagnosed, same with lots of other serious conditions.
Coupled with the hardship and all the other negative aspects it's estimated at least 100K will die unnecessarily.
The economy is just one thing that will cause countless other early deaths if itisn't rescued pretty soon

Basically what you trying to say .lets take a chance, that is a hell away to think over life or death..Anyway latest Oxford Uni says they may have found a vaccine maybe be ready by Sep...

Coronavirus vaccine to be tested in UK from Thursday, government announces
Oxford University team hopes to have vaccine available for use by the Autumn

Human trials of a potential coronavirus vaccine developed at Oxford University are to begin on Thursday, health secretary Matt Hancock has announced.
And one member of the Oxford team said that if trials are successful, millions of doses of vaccine could be available for use by the autumn of this year. And government going to pump 20 million in to help support

Lets hope for the best case scenario with the vaccine and it is ready by the Autumn, but it would still take a bit of time with the distribution of it, but it is still early days yet regarding the vaccine.

The vaccine could be ready by autumn. It would take a year after that to vaccinate the uk public.
Notice the word 'could'. It also could take until next spring for it to be ready, then spring 2022 before the public is vaccinated but all this is just a red herring. We are going for herd immunity, we're already part way there but they don't know how far yet.
Take a look at Sweden's figures. No lockdown or restrictions to speak of, just social distancing like we do in supermarkets etc, they are going for herd immunity too and their economy is virtually intact.
There's no reason at all why we can't use social distancing in restaurants, bowling alleys, all shops and department stores etc and restart the economy.
Leave travel restrictions in place for now but return to a bit more normality and get kids back in school and give everyone their jobs back.
Unnecessarily? You do realise that the lockdown is in place to save lives and protect the nhs?
Yes protect the NHS from a huge influx in a short time, and yes it will save lives of some covid patients but it will also see off 100k non covid victims

Pablo not meaning to offend, but good job you are no in charge of this country..Sweden death toll is very high for size of the country,..Your being very bravado with peoples lives..The school next to me has 1500 kids, and there is a lot bigger than that in UK ..How do you keep that many kids apart..Chaos comes to mind.

The thing that gets me is that lockdown had no sooner started before people were clamouring for it to end. It was never going to be a bed of roses for everyone, it's happening for the most grave reasons and it needs to be allowed to have the desired effect.

Personally, I think it's gonna be 12 weeks from start to end. Johnson said at the start it'd be three months, vulnerable people were placed on 12 weeks more strict lockdown. I think we're just being drip fed a few weeks at a time because it's easier for people to get their heads round.

End of May is when I see restrictions being less stringent.

Just lifting them just to get things to some sort of normality is insanity.

By mid to late may looks like the time the government will have to make a few decisions on whether or not to increase the lockdown further or ease them a bit to help the economy.

Their death rate per million of population is a lot less than ours and we've been in lockdown for 3 weeks, they haven't

Yes, except they've now moved the goalposts to 'when there is no possibility of a second peak', IOW after the vaccine is rolled out because until then, there's always going to be possibility of a second peak.

No one is saying lift the lockdown, but at some point, and BEFORE we are all vaccinated = 2023, the restrictions will have to be eased, they can ease them now.
Social distancing, masks mandatory, gel everywhere, get factories and smaller shops and buisnesses opened up before they all disappear for good.
As far as schools are concerned, what's going to happen with this years leavers? - no exams
whats going to happen with this years new starters? - start them a year later when were all vaccinated?

No exams for this year's leavers has already been confirmed - my eldest Son was due to sit gcse's but they're using an alternative method to grade their learning.

The problem is that to start opening businesses they have to have some sort of childcare in place - the biggest childcare provider is the education system ie kids being at school. Which goes full circle, to social distancing going out of the window and "anyone can catch it, anyone can spread it" happening en masse.

It looks like the exam grades will be marked on their course work put in over the year so far, which will suit the ones that put the work in during their time in the classes, but maybe freeze a bit when it comes to the exam time, then theres the opposite effect, some kids dont put the work in during lessons, but they thrive when the exams come around, could it be possible for any of them that are not happy with their grades given, could then sit the actual exam later if restrictions are eased, I know there would not be much of a time frame, 3 to 6 weeks maybe, but it might help some.
