Neil Lennon's Celtic are History Bhoys
[/h]

CELTIC´S recent victories over Spartak Moscow and Arbroath have guaranteed that Neil Lennon and his squad are set to make a little piece of history when the new year dawns.

This will be the first season in over 40 years that the Hoops have gone beyond Christmas and still been involved in all four major competitions that they entered at the start of the season.

In fact, you have to go back to the heady days of Jock Stein and season 1968/69 to register a campaign when this actually occurred. Naturally, the Celts were actively engaged in a tussle at the top of the league and by the end of 1968, they led the table from Dundee United by two points.

The Scottish Cup ´Road to Hampden´ would get underway on January 25 and Stein´s men had a quarter-final tie in the European Cup against AC Milan to look forward to in February, courtesy of a 6-2 aggregate victory over Red Star Belgrade.

What made this season unique at the time was the issue with the Scottish League Cup. Celtic had reached the final and were due to play Hibernian in a game that was always booked in for an Autumn date, but a fire at Hampden in October that completely destroyed the offices and one of the dressing rooms forced a postponement until the Spring. It meant that the Bhoys literally had everything to play for at the start of 1969.

Many historians will point to season 2002/03 as a time when Martin O´Neill´s Celtic were still involved in the League, Scottish Cup, League Cup and the UEFA Cup, but the crucial difference is that Celtic had not entered the latter tournament at the outset of the season.

O´Neill´s men were ultimately Seville-bound because they had failed to get past FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League qualifier in August.

For the record, the Celts lost out narrowly to AC Milan in 1969 but went on to complete a domestic treble, a feat that would not be repeated by any Celtic side until Martin O´Neill´s first season of 2000/01
.

CELTIC players visited Yorkhill Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow. Members of the first-team squad visited a number of wards and presented Christmas gifts to hundreds of children.

Celtic has been a long-time supporter of the hospital and Celtic Captain Scott Brown said: "The Club is delighted to have such a strong association with Yorkhill Hospital and as players we really enjoy visiting the kids at Christmas.

"The hospital carries out such brilliant work all year round and it is a great opportunity for us to meet some very deserving children and, of course, send our best wishes to hospital staff who make such a difference."

Sky Sports name Neil Lennon as "Manager Of The Year"

Neil Lennon: It still hasn't sunk in

There have been a number of contenders for the manager of the year but Celtic manager Neil Lennon has defied the odds in the Champions League.
In his first season as a Champions League manager, Lennon has guided Celtic to the last 16 of Europe's premier competition despite having one of the smallest budgets.
Before a ball was kicked, Celtic's chances of progressing were written off by many after being drawn against Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.
But Lennon has confounded the critics by leading the Scottish champions into the knockout stages in style. He showed astute tactical nous in guiding the club to one of their greatest ever victories with the 2-1 success over European titans Barcelona at Celtic Park in November.
Lennon's success against the cream of Europe has seen his stock rise considerably and there are sure to be a number of Premier League clubs monitoring his progress.

He's done an awesome job at Celtic. Really has proved he can manage in football - would love to see him one day try out managing in the premier league.

[h=2]Hoops look forward to European football in 2013
[/h] AS Celtic get ready for a last 16 encounter with Juventus next month, we look back at all the previous occasions when the new year has heralded European football

1963/64
Celt’s second foray into European football came in 1963/64 when they played in the Cup-Winners’ Cup. Victories over FC Basel and Dinamo Zagreb saw Celtic compete in Europe after Christmas for the first time, and a victory over Slovan Bratislava set up a semi-final meeting with MTK Budapest. The Hoops won the first leg, thanks to goals from Stevie Chalmers (2) and Jimmy Johnstone, but naïve tactics in the second leg saw them lose 4-0 and go out of the competition.

1965/66
Two years later, Celtic reached the semi-final of the Cup-Winners’ Cup and, again, they were cruelly denied a place in the final. They’d seen off Go Ahead Deventer and Aarhus to face Dynamo Kyiv in the quarter-final, and they knocked the then Soviet Union side out 4-1 on aggregate to set up a ‘Battle of Britain’ against Liverpool. The first leg in Glasgow finished 1-0 in Celtic’s favour thanks to a Bobby Lennox goal, but the Hoops lost at Anfield 2-0, though a late Lennox goal which would have forced extra-time, was controversially disallowed for offside.

1966/67
It was a case of third time lucky for Celtic as they went all the way to the final, this time in the European Cup, and won it for good measure in 1967. The campaign began with wins over FC Zurich and Nantes before a March meeting with Vojvodina. A last-minute Billy McNeill goal at Celtic Park saw Celtic through to face Dukla Prague, and Willie Wallace scored twice in a 3-1 first leg win at Paradise. The return leg finished goal-less, and Celtic were through to the final to face Inter Milan in Lisbon. Despite going a goal down, Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers scored to win the game and crown Celtic the Kings of Europe.

1968/69
Two years after Lisbon, Celtic once again got to the latter stages of the European Cup. They beat St Etienne in the first round before defeating Red Star Belgrade 6-2 on aggregate, which included a 5-1 home leg win, inspired by Jimmy Johsntone, who scored twice on the night. In the quarter-finals, Celtic faced AC Milan, and after a goal-less draw in the San Siro, the Hoops lost 1-0 in the return leg to go out of the tournament.

1969/70
A year later, Celtic reached their second European Cup final following a momentous campaign. They beat FC Basel in the first round and Benfica in the next round, going through on the toss of a coin against the Portuguese side. A quarter-final win over Fiorentina set up a semi-final clash with Leeds United. Celtic won the first leg at Elland Road 1-0 thanks to a goal after 45 seconds from George Connelly, and the return leg at Hampden saw the Hoops win 2-1 on the night in front of a European record crowd of 136,505. In the final, they lost 2-1 to Feyenoord after extra-time.

1970/71
The rising kings of Europe, Ajax, were the next team to see off Celtic in the following season’s competition. The Hoops had thrashed Finnish side, Kokkola 14-0 on aggregate and followed that up with a 10-2 aggregate win over Irish side Waterford, to set up a quarter-final clash against Ajax. But the Dutch side, orchestrated by Johan Cruyff, won the first leg 3-0 in Amsterdam, and a 1-0 win for Celtic in the return leg wasn’t enough to prevent the Hoops going out.

1971/72
It was penalty shoot-out heartache for Celtic in 1972 as they went out at the semi-final stage. The Hoops beat B1903 Copenhagen and Sliema Wanderers in the early rounds before seeing off Ujpest Dozsa. In the semi-final they faced old foes Inter Milan, and both legs finished goal-less, leading to a penalty shoot-out at Celtic Park. And at a tense Paradise, Dixie Deans was the man who missed the spot-kick which allowed the Italian side to progress to the final, though they would lose out against Ajax.

1973/74
Having seen off TPS Turku, Veijle and FC Basel, Celtic faced Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1974. And the first leg at Celtic Park saw one of the most shameful performances by a visiting team to Paradise. Three Atletico players were booked, seven were booked, and their thuggery from first minute to last, targeting Jimmy Johnstone in particular, was disgraceful, provoking clashes on the touchline and in the tunnel after the game. In the return leg, Jock Stein and Jimmy Johnstone faced death threats, and in an intimidating atmosphere, the Hoops lost 2-0.

1975/76
The little-known East German side Sachsenring Zwickau saw off Celtic in the quarter-final of the Cup-Winners’ Cup. Celtic had beaten Valur and Boavista, when the team first wore numbers on their shirts, to reach the last eight, but after a 1-1 draw at home, they travelled behind the Iron Curtain and lost 1-0.

1979/80
Celtic reached the quarter-final of the European Cup in 1980 and faced Real Madrid in a pulsating clash. To get there, Celtic had beaten Partizan Tirana and Dundalk, but while they’d scraped through against the Irish side, winning the first leg 3-2 and drawing the return 0-0, Billy McNeill’s side produced a stunning first-leg performance against Real Madrid, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from George McCluskey and Johnny Doyle. In the Bernabeu Stadium, however, the Spanish side scored three without reply to go through to the semi-final.

2002/03
Celtic’s road to Seville and the UEFA Cup final of 2003 began with defeat to FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League qualifier. But victories over FK Suduva, Blackburn Rovers and Celta Vigo ensured European football after Christmas for the first time since 1980. Further victories over VfB Stuttgart and Liverpool propelled Celtic into the semi-final of the UEFA Cup where they knocked out Boavista to face Porto. And Martin O’Neill’s side were desperately unlucky to lose 3-2 after extra-time to the Portuguese side.

2003/04
Celtic narrowly failed to progress from the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and dropped into the UEFA Cup. They knocked out FC Teplice to face Barcelona in the last 16, and after a 1-0 victory at home courtesy of an Alan Thompson goal, the Hoops drew 0-0 in the Nou Camp to knock the Catalan giants out of the competition. That set up a quarter-final against Villarreal, and it was the Spanish side who progressed to the last four.

2006/07
Celtic made history when they got beyond the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the first time. That came courtesy of a momentous victory over Manchester United on matchday five in a group that also contained Benfica and FC Copenhagen. Shunsuke Nakamura scored the only goal of the game with a stunning free-kick eight minutes from time, and then in the last minute, Artur Boruc saved a penalty. In the last 16, Celtic were paired with AC Milan and it took an extra-time goal from Kaka in the second leg in the San Siro to knock Celtic out. The Italians would go on to win the tournament that season.

2007/08
The following season Celtic made it out of the group stages again, this time in a group with Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk and holders AC Milan. To get there, Celtic had to knock out Spratak Moscow in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Celtic Park, when Artur Boruc was again the hero. And they were handed another tough last 16 tie, this time against Barcelona. Celtic lost the first leg in Glasgow 3-2, and went down 1-0 in the Nou Camp to exit the competition.

Champions head to Spanish training camp

[/h] By: Laura Brannan on 09 Jan, 2013 10:16
THE Celtic first-team squad flew out to a training camp in Spain today as they begin building up for a resumption of competitive football on January 19.

The players enjoyed a welcome winter break following the 1-0 victory over Motherwell, which established a nine-point lead at the top of the SPL, and it´s given them a change to rest and recharge the batteries ahead of a busy second half to the season.

Fraser Forster took a trip back down south, but after a few days to himself he is now geared up for a trip to Spain with the rest of his team-mates.

The goalkeeper is looking forward to the training camp in Marbella and believes it will do the side good ahead of a busy few months.

"It will help, definitely, because we´ve had so many games in only a couple of months," he told this week´s Celtic View. "It´s been a demanding time for us so this period will help us relax and recharge.

"We´ll treat the week in Spain like a mini pre-season, the lads will go on the back of some rest, and then we´ll get some time together to train again.

"It´s important we come back fully switched on because we have some big games coming up – there´s a League Cup semi-final and the Champions League in the space of a couple of weeks, but also some big league games as well."

The two-week break is a new experience for the young keeper, and even though he would have preferred it a little earlier in the schedule, he is still pleased to be going into it on a high.

"We´ve been on a good run recently, apart from the Hibs game, so the Motherwell win was a good result to finish on," he continued.

"It´s strange timing to have a break, though, I would probably have expected it to be over the Christmas period if anything. But I´ve never had a winter break before so this is a new experience for me. It´s nice to get a bit of time off at the middle of the season and I think this is new for a lot of the boys."
